Favourite TV shows and how they've influenced you~

What are your top favourite TV show(s) of all time?

Also, if you want to tie this in to talking about OCs: Do you think your favourite TV shows have influenced what type of OCs you make, or have guided you in how you've written their backstories/worlds/lore/designs etc.

~~

My favourite show is Gravity Falls (yes... still!). It's been my top favourite for a few years, and even though I get into other things briefly, I still find myself coming back to Gravity Falls... I just love it so much. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Other top favourites of mine are Hannibal, Invader Zim, Inuyasha, Daredevil, and Dirk Gently. These are ones that I really fell in love with right away when watching, though its not even a fraction of all the other shows I've seen that I love. Just the ones that really stick.

I know for a fact that Inuyasha has influenced my interest in creating OCs and world building... it sunk its teeth into me when I was but a wee lass and it really took off from there. Most of my ocs and the universe they reside in, originated from Inuyasha Aus that went completely out of control when I was younger, and formed into their own thing.

I'm interested to hear your favourite shows (I'd be lying if I said this thread wasn't an excuse to find more good shows to watch >_> )

vriska

steven universe really influenced my art and writing, and a lot of my characters have little references to various aspects of the show!

gob-bee

trollhunters and wizards (3below is good, but it didn't inspire me as much) absolutely floored me when i watched them.

'even in the word hopeless, there is hope' has become my mantra. i plan on getting something to reference it tattooed on me, because it's so important to me. and aside from an oc of my best friend, douxie is probably my favorite character ever.

Sizzle

Sherlock is one of two shows where I've seen every episode (the other was some Scooby Doo series that I watched when I was seven). And while I know it isn't flawless (season four wasn't very good, especially episode two), it's definitely my favorite show. Johnlock is my OTP and I relate to Sherlock to the point where if I start kinning him I would not be surprised.

And while it's a web series and not a TV show, (though IMDB calls it a TV show so I don't know what to think), Sanders Sides has been my main inspiration for ocs that aren't tied to any fandom. I have one oc in particular who's personality is very inspired by Patton, and another who's initial design was inspired by Janus (though I've since redesigned her).

Victorck

If it wasn't obvious enough (it's probably not at all), Gravity Falls was a huge inspo for me when it came to characters. I joined the fandom when the rerun marathon played, back in 2016-2017. I still love it and I absolutely love adventurecore themes because of it.

It was actually the first show I've ever gotten involved in fandom with and created and developed an OC for. I suppose certain themes in my characters (cryptids, demons, humanoids) do show through.

A few other shows that have definitely influenced my characters, even if they may not show it-
The Owl House (Cryptids, humanoids, etc) It's another one of my favorites due to it having somewhat Gravity Falls themes. One of the GF storyboard artists created it.
Steven Universe (I guess just my gemsonas..?) We stan inclusivity and pastel rocks.
MLP (The art style for sure influenced mine) Pastel hormse. I grew up with the G3 ponies, so seeing G4 take the story to a different level was refreshing. Super hyped for G5!
Godzilla The Series (Big monsters) It's very hard to find to watch unless you own the complete series DVD as I do, but it is really nice for Godzilla fans who also love cartoons (and love the 1998 film in general). If this type of show is your thing, I do suggest checking out Singular Point! It's a new Godzilla anime coming out this year to Netflix, and it's bringing back a lot of the older kaiju from the original films.
Once Upon A Time (Medieval themes, in-depth villain backstories) It's on Disney+, and it's absolutely one of my favorite shows rn. I started watching it because my mom did when it came out, but she stopped after a few episodes.
Care Bears {Nelvana} (My uhh Care Bears OC, villain designs) I love this show for nostalgic and personal reasons. Mostly nostalgic. Absolutely love No Heart as a villain my goodness-- I believe it should be on Kim/KissCartoon.
Green Eggs and Ham (I love the character designs and line art)
I don't usually talk about this one enough. It's on Netflix and it's getting a second season soon. It's another one of my favorites tbh!

Avatar: The Last Airbender, and...

Ngl I owe my work to the og Naruto. 12 year old me couldn't get merch so I was just redrawing screenshots of the anime with my favorite characters and that's how I got into art and making ocs when I saw others in the fandom doing it lmao. Thanks you funky little orange ninja, without you I wouldn't be here

After some chatting with some friends on Discord and a bit of reflection, I came to realize that some of the stuff, and even characters, in my story Dangerous Day Ahead were influenced by a Disney XD show known as MotorCitywhich is one of my favorite cartoons of all time, so it's no wonder that it had an impact, albeit a fairly unconscious impact, on my creative process. Where it's most obvious is definitely in the idea of there being sky-cities and a more rough surface world but two of my main characters, Aspen and Farran, were partially inspired by the two of the mains in MotorCity. It was such a treat to come to that conclusion a while back and this thread made me think about it again so I couldn't help but comment.

NinjaNightCrawler

Ninjago for sure- I based my Hybrids off of the six ninjas-

I've been interested in MLP since mid-season 2 and you can definitely see a lot of influences if you look close enough, such as eyes (big ol' expressive ovals) and hair (very poofy and spikey usually, does not obey gravity, physics or perspective) since ponies were basically all I drew back then, though ironically I'm now very bad at drawing quadrupeds in general because I drifted away from ponies to humanoids after people kept calling me childish at age ~10 for liking MLP. My first few real OCs were ponies as well, though they're long gone now. I might revamp some of them someday though

Some of my inspirations

My Name Is Earl, and a big reason why I love Classic Rock

Malcolm in the Middle, life is unfair

Its moslty  alot of Adult Swim shows

Since most of my OC's have just lovely personalities

Squidbillies, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Venture Bros, Metalocalypse, and stuff

I don't watch a lot of TV but I do have some favourites that have inspired me both overtly and subconsciously with my art and characters

I watched lot of older British comedies with my parents as a kid, The Young Ones (probably helped my love of all things 80s and subcultures), Red Dwarf (I think this started my love of sci-fi things), Blackadder, and some newer ones when I was older like the Mighty Boosh (Also another favourite of mine, and has a lot of music and subculture jokes and is very funny and creative) and IT Crowd. I also like Flight of the Concords, which is very New Zealander and is also a musical comedy show

I also like some of the newer more drama/serious shows on streaming services like The Witcher (I like the sword fights the most :P), Dark (The German time travel one, I like this one a lot and it also got an 80s setting), the first season of Stranger Things (I didn't like the other ones) and Altered Carbon (Didn't watch the second, also a fun Cyberpunk/sci-fi show), Dirk Gently (I like the eccentric characters) and The Boys (I like their take on Superheroes and I prefer the show to the comics)

And while I haven't finished either of them, I'm enjoying Twin Peaks and Star Trek the Next Generation

I've also watched a few anime series, my favourites off the top of my head are probably Mob Psycho 100, Cowboy Bebop and Space Dandy

Azrael

Honestly, I have a preference for the older cartoons from the 2000s that have a morbid twist to it, such as The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, or Courage the Cowardly Dog, as their morbid sense of curiosity and confronting the dead with a sense of humor actually helped me cope with losing the elderly family members that I had. Instead of imagining the Grim Reaper as a foe, I imagined him as a skeleton in a cloak with a Jamaican accent who was just taking my elders to the underworld or overworld, where everyone went depending on their situation. As an adult, I don't do that anymore, but for a good part of my life, it helped me cope with loss, especially during at a young age where I could barely begin to comprehend loss.

Steven Universe also taught me to, "Take no bitches if they be givin' stitches." :)

I don't think I take anything away from shows, actually. Probably for a good reason, considering I watch like..true crime, lifestyle and horror.

The walking dead will always have a special place in my heart. I think its the first show aside from like..Naruto, that i actually got excited about and felt was like.. a big portion of my life.

+1 on Gravity Falls!!! I haven’t watched the show in years, but I hope to watch it again once I have time to do so! I still think about it a lot. Also, I’m literally wearing a replica of Mabel Pines’ sweater right now, and I plan to make this shirt part of an alternate outfit for one of my sonas. One of my OCs also still has some ties to Gravity Falls, even though I don’t label her as a Gravity Falls OC anymore. I also have a gnome OC that really likes the gnomes from Gravity falls. I miss this show a lot. It feels like just yesterday, I was watching trailers for the final episodes.

+1 on My Little Pony too!! I grew up with both Gen 4 (which I’d say is the most popular generation of MLP), but before that, I grew up watching DVDs of the older generations. I honestly love all generations of MLP (except Pony Life, which I think partially counts as a generation). I have 2 pages worth of MLP OCs in my MLP OCs folder, but I actually have way more MLP OCs than that. A lot of them were just lost, unfortunately. I’ve been making MLP OCs since Elementary school. I also have tons of MLP  toys. I used to have a lot more than I do now. My ponysona is also shipped with a Gen 1 character that’s honestly pretty underrated imo. Knight Shade (the character shipped with my ponysona) is also a huge comfort character of mine, since he’s from my favorite Gen 1 episode when I was little. It feels really strange knowing that FIM (Gen 4) is over. Gen 5 seems pretty good, though. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I like what I’ve seen so far. I’ll admit that I was worried for Gen 5 at first, but I’m happy with what I have seen of Gen 5.

Littlest Pet Shop (specifically the 2012 TV series). LPS already had a special place in my heart, since I collected the toys (I still do), so an LPS TV series was really cool to me at the time. I even played this app a lot that was based on the series (I don’t remember what it’s called). It was basically a game where you could build your own town, take care of pets, get new pets, visit other players’ towns, and even scan your LPS toys into the game by using these cards that would come with the Gen 3 (or at least what the fandom called G3) LPS toys. It still feels so strange knowing that the 2012 series is over, and now there’s a new LPS show.

Also, a +1 on Care Bears too!! I had multiple Care Bears DVDs from different generations, along with multiple Care Bears plushies too. I don’t know what happened to most of them, unfortunately. From what I remember, my DVD and plushie collection consisted of Nelvana and Adventures in Care-a-lot. Those were the two versions that I mostly grew up with. My favorite characters from the Nelvana series were definitely Noble Heart Horse and Brave Heart Lion. Both are definitely comfort characters of mine. My Care Bears OC (who I might turn into a sona, idk yet) is a horse, probably because of my admiration for Noble Heart Horse. As for relationships, my Care Bears OC is shipped with Brave Heart Lion. Idek where this ship came from anymore, I just started it back when my CB OC was created (2017) and it stuck with me and became a comfort ship. Oh, and funny fact, when I was really little, I thought Noble Heart Horse was a girl. I was so shocked when I found out he was actually a boy lol!!! Noble Heart Horse is underrated imo. I had a plushie of Brave Heart Lion at some point, but idk if I still have it or not. Unfortunately, I never had a plushie of Noble Heart Horse, but I wish I did! As for my favorite villain from the Nelvana series, I’m going to have to say Shreeky. I don’t know why, she just stuck with me for some reason. I might have had a crush on her without realizing it, because I was way too young to understand bisexuality back then lol!! As for Adventures in Care-a-lot, the character that stuck with me the most was Oopsy. Not sure why, but he did. He’s also another comfort character. I even have a plushie of him, and unlike most of my Care Bears plushies now, he’s still in pretty good condition. I shall protect this bean with my life. Oopsy is also kind of underrated imo.

There’s plenty of other shows I could list, but this comment is getting way too long, so I’ll leave it at that.
