Favourite TV shows and how they've influenced you~

What are your top favourite TV show(s) of all time?

Also, if you want to tie this in to talking about OCs: Do you think your favourite TV shows have influenced what type of OCs you make, or have guided you in how you've written their backstories/worlds/lore/designs etc.

~~

My favourite show is Gravity Falls (yes... still!). It's been my top favourite for a few years, and even though I get into other things briefly, I still find myself coming back to Gravity Falls... I just love it so much. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Other top favourites of mine are Hannibal, Invader Zim, Inuyasha, Daredevil, and Dirk Gently. These are ones that I really fell in love with right away when watching, though its not even a fraction of all the other shows I've seen that I love. Just the ones that really stick.

I know for a fact that Inuyasha has influenced my interest in creating OCs and world building... it sunk its teeth into me when I was but a wee lass and it really took off from there. Most of my ocs and the universe they reside in, originated from Inuyasha Aus that went completely out of control when I was younger, and formed into their own thing.

I'm interested to hear your favourite shows (I'd be lying if I said this thread wasn't an excuse to find more good shows to watch >_> )

-Alex-

My favorite shows are Steven Universe, Wander Over Yonder, The Amazing World Of Gumball, Spongebob but only seasons 1-3 with a few exceptions, Popee The Performer, Kemono Friends, Blue's Clues (I don't see it too much but it's been here all my life and it's just so happy and nice and I'm honestly curious about the reboot if it hasn't happened yet lol. It'll never be as great but I'm still curious), and Regular Show.

Others I like are Rocko's Modern Life, CatDog, Hey Arnold, Rick And Morty, Adventure Time, MLP (gens 3 and 4 lmao), Gravity Falls, and OK KO: Let's Be Heros.

Shows I grew up loving were the Pokemon anime, Digimon Fusion/Xros Wars, Peppa Pig (as a ten-year-old. Made me sad I had no friends irl) Doc McStuffins (same reason as Peppa), Kimba The White Lion/Leo The Lion, some true crime shows (watched Dateline the most but I think 20/20 (is that the name?) was my favorite as there was more than just murders), Hamtaro, and a reality vet show called The Incredible Doctor Pol (a friend of a friend met him once and was able to give me a signed image from him so that's cool even though it has my deadname and bad memories associated with it now lol),.

I probs missed a lot.

I went overboard on stuff after this; I went on about animal documentaries and went on about other stuff. Warning: Mentions of blood and gore and death plus other influences.

I mostly grew up on animal documentaries of them in the wild or just people talking about them. It was interesting and my favorites were always the lions in South Africa. This and animators on YouTube are probably why I like drawing and writing about death so much; blood and gore were common in those shows/movies/documentaries. I used to be scared to look at it but sooner or later, I became able to watch a pride of lions killing its prey, blood and gore and all, and be just fine. My mom also once pushed in a wagon full of sand and I got those realistic animal figures from those feed stores (can't remember the brand but they're still pretty cool) and I had a long story based around the animals I liked (mostly ones from South Africa) plus Kimba and Simba lol. Full of so much death and sadness. I wish I could recall these stories but too bad. I have the memory of a goldfish when it comes to these kinds of things and can remember very few moments. I also had a story happen for weeks about these Dollar Tree dinosaur figures I had during a dinosaur phase in first or second grade. (I think it was about the group leaving their home or something and finding a home but Blackberry the Triceratops was doing stuff or something...I forgot and that's all I remember except there was a guy who could ride and was good friends with a brontosaurus???) Also, I think I've been into documentaries since around age seven? So yeah. Thanks, Nat Geo Wild.

They've really influenced me and I wouldn't be the person I am today without them so...

I can also say Pokemon has influenced me as well overall, mostly the games, though. I assume shows like AV, SU, KTWL, and several others have also influenced my storytelling as well from the looks of it.

Other influences: Undertale, artists I like, Eeveelutions, Warriors even though I haven't read more than one book (eight-year-old me spoiled the whole series except for the most recent books. The world was always one of my favorites to think about), Team Fortress 2, watching videos about how horror works (themes and such), videos about pretty much useless knowledge I'll never use but it's still interesting to learn about anyway, my doggo, Megan, the darkness of the world, LittleBigPlanet's Eevee storytelling community, Flipnote Hatena (before Sudomemo but Sudomemo influenced me a whole lot too), gore art, peoples MLP gore speedpaints, edgy music, music as a whole, creating worlds and characters of my own, my friend's stories and characters, and most importantly, my dad's death.
I had to have missed a lot but eh. I got pretty much most of them, I think.

I admit I have a strong feeling I'm fucked up or something but can fit in with everyone just fine so no one really bats an eye or cares. Not too sure, though.

Titheling

Buffy the Vampire Slayer certainly influenced my early early character creation! And it has since inspired a handful of characters who've started off as baseline similar tropes. Also gimme that vampire aesthetic thanks.

Caine

And that's why Ken is basically the main reason I adore Digimon so much.

Honestly that's the only show that's influenced me, but I will be taking notes of what everyone watches so I can get more aus for Koi

VincentVanGoat

The Toei Tokusatsu shows. Well the ones I've seen but I mean I could see me working with some I can't really watch due to a lack of subs, Henshin Ninja Arashi for example, maybe I could work with that for inspiration at some point.

But mainly Super Sentai, Kamen Rider and Metal Heroes. Radical action, fun to watch, plenty to work with in terms of inspiration later on, they got them all. Oh and JAMS. God damn.

But then some anime has influenced, but not as directly. Jojo has influenced some designs plus the whole having Hamon in my universe thing. It's just too cool not to have.

But I also love a selection of older sitcoms, not like super old, but still old for the most part, those have absolutely never influenced me, but this is a topic about favorite shows so hey figure I'd mention them at least :p

Ooo~ A fellow Dirk Gently fan! I love that show and it’s definitely up there with my all time favs ^^ Other favs of mine are Avatar the last airbender, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, House M.D, Lucifer, Good Omens, the untamed,  altered carbon and the Witcher. These are just some of my fav shows, but these were the first ones to come to mind ;)

And the shows I watch definitely influence me - not only my fav ones - in both my oc creation and writing. It’s a good way of finding thing inspiration I think :3

Aaah, don't get me started about my favorite TV shows, I will never shut up. I mean, that's why all of my OCs are fandom based.

When it comes to TV shows, I can hardly call any of them my favorite, because there are some shows that I really like, but they don't affect my characters at all, there are also some, which I only watch because of cast, and lastly the ones that are perfect in every way, but their ending is just a huge disappointment, nothing more.

I will start with iZombie, since it affected my works most (I mean, just look at my goddamn username, I'm clearly obsessed).

What I like about it:

  • Even if you cannot see Sci-Fi among it's genres, it actually is a Sci-Fi, as well as detective, comedy, drama and most of the genres I adore.
  • It's not long enough to make you sick.
  • It's nothing like cliche zombie movies and shows.
  • It breaks quite a few stereotypes, such as stereotype that French (or even just French speaking) characters must do nothing but flirting.
  • Character development: Watching mere airheads grow into kick*ss characters, who can change the world, is quite amusing.
  • Secret or not so secret hidden messages and meanings behind everything, wordplay.
  • Cast. They are really good at playing their characters and making them lovable, detestable or both at the same time.
  • I generally like shows that follow main plot, but also have things that start and end in the one episode. Typical detective stuff *cough* Like in X-Files or Supernatural *cough*
  • You can find all kinds of characters there and many of them are very relatable or admirable, such as certain dramatic characters with awesome sense of style and velvety voice. *cough* But that's just my opinion. *cough*
  • I just love how it gives slice-of-life vibes despite all the zombies roaming around.
  • It's just damn hilarious.

Though everything has it's bad sides... even this show:

It's ending.

Fans. Imagine searching for like-minded people for months, barely finding a few people who know what the hell is iZombie... and when you find them, you wish you did not, because... Y I K E S. Just big ol yikes. Gotta admit It has cringiest fanbase ever (And trust me I've been part of many extremely cringe fandoms).

How it affected my characters: First of all, being a person who only makes fandom based OCs (Because when I create something completely original, I use it in my novels and comics instead of using them for RP), I've instantly made an OC based off this show, and I wrote long*ss OC insert fanfic featuring her, knowing that I'd never be able to use her in RP, due to fandom's current condition.

Actually there's more story about how it affected my characters (even the ones that are based off other fandoms), but I rather keep that to myself :V

Anyways: I mentioned Supernatural up there, no?

Yeah.

Supernatural.

  • I'm not very hardcore fan of it to be honest. I do not like it's dry, repetitive tactic:

Show: "Look at that disgusting character. You hate him/her, don't you? Do you want to watch them die?"

Fans: "Heck yes!"

Show: "LMAO. Not happening! But look at them again, they've changed so much. Don't you love them? Don't you want them to survive now?"

Fans: "OMG YESH!"

Show: "RIP, LMAO."

  • But I kinda like this cliche strategy: Cut off one head and two will take their place

Guys always solve one problem which somewhat causes worse problems to arise.  They are like silly little girls who try to clean the dish, just to break it in process.

"We broke the dish, but at least it's clean now."

"All we need is getting glue."

"Yeah, let's get the glue and fix it."

*five minutes after"

"Okay I glued my fingers on the dish in process and I might need an amputation, but hey, at least the dish is fine."

"Yeah, looks fine to me."

Really? We also saw that coming. Stop doing exactly same things all the time, please!

  • Regardless of everything, this show is really nice to watch, thanks to many funny jokes and characters, therefore it also inspired me to make one OC. Also, let us be honest, we all like shows that "steal ideas and then improve them" (Just like Supernatural: a large mix of Scooby-Doo, creepypastas, various mythology, bible and many more) Exactly what I adored about X-Files and Black Butler (Which used to be my number one fandom not very long time ago).

Another show that inspired me to create character was Altered Carbon, however, I do not like that show at all, only thing that inspired me to watch it was it's cast.

You think this is hella long reply? Actually it's very short because I am sleepy. Yep, I'm that geeky.

I'm assuming this thread is for favorite shows artistically? Or at least thats how i'm gonna answer it. (I really like spongebob but i can't say it influenced my art at all)

I'm not a huge fan of the pokemon anime or naruto anymore, but i have to give them credit because i started drawing by trying to copy those styles.

I don't watch tv so i dont have many favorites, but i'd say my absolute favorite is avatar: the last airbender. a lot of story elements in my own ocs ive noticed are heavily inspired by this show (completely unintentionally too). Ive rewatched it a ton of times and ive always loved how culturally influenced it is, compared to a lot of other fantasy shows or settings that tend to be a generic european inspired world.

I also really adore invader zim, this is another show i watched a lot as a kid. the dark humor and bleakness of the world, although i dont use these kinds of elements myself, was super fun and inspires me to make a similar story or setting. also, i recently had a classmate tell me my art reminded them of invader zim and it made me REALLY happy ;___;

and lastly, it feels kinda weird calling this one a favorite of mine since i first watched it only recently.... but i really love clone high... I heard one day on twitter that its getting a reboot or something and someone mentioned the show in full being on youtube for free, so i gave it a watch and i really liked it... i'm a huge fan of the early 2000's cartoon art style, and this show was not only funny but i think the character designs and art style are super fun and it makes me wanna push the cartoony-ness of my style more...

also... i know homestuck isnt a show but it influenced my art and characters SOOOOO much its crazy...

milkywaytrain

haha my fave show depends on whatever i'm hyperfixating on. anyway it's gurren lagann. it hasn't affected my art style very much (yet) (though i do more painterly/watercolor backgrounds now because of it). however it HAS infected my story telling and how i act both offline and irl. i am so much more likely to start a fistfight because of this show it's ridiculous. i now try and make my stories grandiose and ridiculous because IF GURREN LAGANN CAN HAVE A MECHA BIGGER THAN THE OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT!!!

Mercenary_Ike

Ok I've just been realizing that Dragon ball and SU have also been influencing me so thanks.

VincentVanGoat

THe CLAMP mention above reminds me, Cardcaptor Sakura definitely was a huge influence. How I forgot that in my initial post I dunno. Only like most my OG magic cast is only around cause of that inspiration :p
