commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

Ooop I hope double posts are ok? My old one is p outdated and I’ve gone through a few more experiences lol

(accidentally pressed post so im still putting my peeves lol)

- pretty much everyone has said this before, but 👏lack 👏of 👏communi 👏 cation 👏. I hate beign a bother so when I accept art offers and i have to contact you once a month to check how the process is doing just to get a “oh yeah I’m actually starting it right now I’ll be finishing it in a week sorry for the wait“ and I get repeated that same exact excuse every single time , it’s a lil annoying. Especially when I’m giving out adopts and there are other people who are also interested in that character. I’m not saying that art should be done by the next week, art takes time and I completely understand if you’re busy, but don’t just ghost me like that. Be honest with me. I hate how often that happens, it’s why I rarely accept art offers, cause I ALWAYS get ghosted, or I get a obvious rushed drawing. I usually just give the character to someone else if the person hasn’t answered or given me any updates for over 4-6 months.

- when people tell you that theyre busy with “other projects and irl situations” and then participate in other commissions, maps, collabs and offers, fully aware. Even worst when they participate in other things when they already have enough on their plate as it is, and do the same exact thing to those people as well, wasting THEIR time as well. Like, yo, if you arent interested in doing the trade anymore just tell me instead of wasting my time, it’d be much better than just leaving me hanging. Obviously, if there’s an actual irl emergency or situation and you have to go offline or post vent art to cheer yourself up, I’m 100% find with that, but when people make up excuses, lie and procrastinate, then that’s an issue.

- this isn’t 100% a commission problem, but when people offer art or characters, and when you accept the offer, they just- never reply again. I never understood why people do that. You’re interested in a character, but then just run off when the owner responds to you? Do you want the character or....? Did you just want my attention? Idk my brain melts whenever it happens. Even worst is when they decide to respond like MONTHS later and get pissed off when you’ve already given away the character. Bruh when you ghost me for over 2-3 months before i even had the chance to ask you which character I wanted you to draw, damn right I’m cancelling the offer. I have other clients who are more interested in getting it, I don’t want to leave them hanging because up you refuse to answer back in under a month. Just a simple “yeah just give me the characters and I’ll draw them. I’m a bit busy so it might take a while, hope that’s ok :)” takes about 2 minutes to write down, even less too. If you aren’t interested in a character, DONT OFFER ON IT. Simple as hell, or just say “nvm I’m not really interested in it anymore” before the actual offer takes place.

- I put this in the previous comment, but WHEN PEOPLE DONT READ THE RULES. God I’ve tried everything to put them in a place where no one can miss them but at this point I feel like some people are just like- scrolling down and commenting emedietely. This is especially annoying when I get nsfw/fetish requests. I always indicate in my post that I’m under 18, and when I get comments like “can you draw my character doing (insert graphic nsfw action here)“ without warning, it’s gross, and illegal.

- When i give an art offer to a person and they send me a ref sheet that is overly watermarked and straight up impossible to see and colour pick. I understand that you dotn want to get your art stolen, I get that, but don’t put a billion watermark or a giant one over the entire character and expect people to be able to draw them no problem. At least send me a less watermarked version if art theft is a genuine problem.

- lack of information on the character! How am I suppose to know how to pose your character if I don’t know what they usually feel/how they usually act? I WANNA KNOW IF YA BOI IS HAPPY OR GRUMPY. This is especially annoying when I finish the art and the person says “this isn’t how my character acts at all but ok”... how was I suppose to know that when there’s literally no info nor any kind of art THAT SHOWS HOW THEY ACT KFKDKJSDDJDJJJDDJJFJGJJFJFJFJDJSJSJAJSJJD IM GONNA LOSE IT I AM NOT MIND READER I CANNOT READ BRAIN I AM BUT A MERE ARTIST FHFFDKSKAKKS

- I mean no offence to people who aren’t artists, but when i send an unfinished sketch and the person says “why does my character look like that? Why is it so scribbly and unclean? You’re not scamming me right?” like chill dude it’s just a sketch I didn’t even start making the lineart yet. Another one is when people get fussy when it takes me more than a day to finish their art. I’m not a whole ass printer, it takes time to draw, especially when I got school and other projects to do on top of that.

- this has only happened once or twice, but when people misgender or put... visual stereotype- y things on my lgbtq+ characters. It might just be a misunderstanding, and I might just be paranoid, but when people make my gay/trans characters “overly flamboyant” or purposely put unecessary/offensive stereotypes or things when my characters are like- mellow or grumpy just makes me- eeeeeeeeeegh. It isn’t much of a problem, thank god since most of my characters are lgbtq+, but if you aren't sure or would like to be informed about something, PLEEEEAASE tell me! Don’t be shy! There are no stupid questions, I’m always happy to answer any questions about the LGBTQ+ community if you feel that you aren’t educated enough or would like to not offend anyone before drawing!

As an artist I really hate when people ignore what I ask when I ask for references.

Yes I want images, but I also need like, a snippet of personality. I need an idea of what you want out of this commission. A pose, a feeling, a vibe. Even a badly drawn 'idea' is something to go off of. I've realized that this is the reason I am slow. I have to come up with everything, and then it's not what they wanted and they don't clarify.

When its Incredibly Obvious someone doesn't read your rules before commissioning and you have to awkwardly explain you're uncomfortable drawing what they requested bcus they ignored text literally just above them. Like come on I don't make lengthy rules. I have bullet points whenever I post. Easy peasy! None of my posts are fcfs! No excuse!!!

I don't know how an artist can justify allowing a customer to pay $100+ for a commission and not even show WIPs. Got a comm worth WELL over $100 and was simply sent the final product. There are some things I want to change about it but I risk having fees tacked on for changes since it is "finished."

This happens way more often to me than it needs to.
