Hi!

Since the original Unpopular Opinion Thread is locked (it turned into a shit-show reeeaaal fast) , I've gotten permission to remake it.

I've decided to use the original rules for the thread since those were gucci

Edit: I didn't mean to post ic aaaaaaaa

Spoilers: Rules

- Don't be very rude or snarky to others. Remember, everyone has their own personal opinions.

- Disagreeing with someone's opinion is allowed, as long as it's not rude.

- Yo don't namedrop people, even if they're not on this site.

- To avoid causing a mess, refrain from starting an argument at all times!

- If there's something wrong going on in this thread, or if it's going out-of-hand, please PM me so that I can take care of it!

- Vaguing someone is prohibited, and it's connected to the third rule.

- Please do not post more than twice per page, so that it won't cause too much of a mess.

- It's okay if you vent, don't go too all-out on it. This is not the Vent Board.

- Also, please try not to turn this thread into a saltfest.

- Please, no opinions focused on racism, LGBT, politics, religion and the like. These will cause a massive flamewar. Controversial opinions are also not allowed unless taken lightly.

- Don't say stuff like "I don't like X" or "What? I love X!" in a way that's aggressive. This is meant to be a nice thread about sharing your unpopular opinions, not countering someone else's opinion.

-If it's something nsfw, use a spoiler box, or blackout the text  like this

- Don't call this thread out as a "bad idea." If you don't like this thread, please do not post here.

-Failure to comply with these rules will result in a warning, or ban depending on how severely you broke the rules.

Ey yo,  if you see someone breaking the rules, pm me. I love it when ppl do this because I'm a blind bih.

None (yet, but I think it's time to bring this bad boy out.)

I don't like plain chocolate ice cream or ice cream that uses chocolate as the base. Neapolitan is fine, but I can't just eat like plain chocolate ice cream unless it's in a milkshake.

Also sherbet is gross.

^ This is a fact.

I've watched a few later Barbie movies and they just don't hit the same. Animation style is giving Sims 4 vibes and not in a good way. Not to mention they just ran out of ideas.

i was debating on whether to put this post in either this thread or my “what jokes/memes do you just not find funny thread” but boy do i feel like i have a hot take (this is not targeted at anyone at all btw); also i’m also not trying to diss anyone

i’ve just personally never understood the meme or joke where people are like “omg my ocs are ✨traumatized✨” or anything similar relating to how traumatized ocs are or whatnot, or memes like “how creators feel after giving their ocs lots of trauma”

well i think this distaste for this sort of thing is probably just a me thing in particular to not like these sort of things; like i feel such an emotional connection to a lot of my characters that talking about their trauma/poor mental health often makes me very emotional and start crying

plus a lot of my ocs trauma comes from backstories which center around extremely sensitive and triggering topics, and i just feel it would be distasteful for me or others to joke about my ocs’ trauma which comes from those extremely sensitive subjects? idk it’s hard to word this sort of thing properly but this could definitely just be me because of the nature of my ocs backstories

i don’t give my ocs trauma just because i can or because “it makes their story spicier” but rather i think it’s important to portray certain issues, and i often do that (alongside other forms of self-expression) through my ocs and i like to use backstories to make an explanation of why a character turned out a certain way

insomnimac

^ UGH SO REAL. It pissed me off when people add trauma onto their character without any real thought or merit whatsoever and just slap it on because “IT’S SPICYYYY OOOH.” A lot of people incorporate their trauma into their OC’s backstory as a form to cope and come to terms with their own trauma and emotions, and it makes me so mad when people just add it on like it’s nothing.

Art is so much more fun when you branch out of your comfort zone and try something you wouldn’t usually do. You’d be surprised at how good you are at things you’ve never even tried until now. Also, I think a lot of artists forget to give themselves permission to fail which is a really important part of the art process. Improvement can only be made if you have something that needs to be improved in the first place (which there’s ALWAYS something we could work on within our own art).

apodoforcas giving this my +1 its a little Weird. like i know most of the jokes are being made about like, fake fantasy trauma but. insert Man cow here.

PK_Skeletons

Did someone mention adding copious amounts of unnecessary trauma to fictional characters?

Yeah, it's weird. I think it is in poor taste to just needlessly add trauma just for the sake of it. It's like, oh wow, you are so unique for making someone suffer just for fun, wahoo. I know they aren't real, but it still seems distasteful and disrespectful. It also feels really poorly done and extraordinarily inconsiderate most of the time. I can give it a pass when the person is willing to go back and change parts of the character to be more respectful on the iffy parts, but when they are unwilling to and instead just are like "Oh well :p" is when I feel as if it's extremely poorly done. I think it gets me the most when the character goes through absolutely gut-wrenching trauma and is only mildly annoyed by it ever. They could have their entire family killed and only be slightly peeved off. It's also shit storytelling and repetitive. I've noticed that most people who do this follow the same formula: Abuse, death, misery, no comfort. There is no reward for the tests. If you need trauma to make a character interesting, then you have failed as a creator.

Maybe it is because I put a lot of what I have been through into my own characters, but who even knows anymore. I just think it's distasteful and disrespectful, especially to people who have gone through what that character has.

v Real. Like if the character is not actually affected by it then it really shouldn't be considered trauma. It's more of a minor inconvenience than anything else

apodoforcas

PK_Skeletons so true about the part where people will have a character go through the most abysmally bad event but then the character themselves will just be slightly peeved for it yet they call it “trauma”

well if a character is only slightly peeved by such an event can you even call that trauma anymore like????? it’s just really obvious at that point the trauma is there just because you can

v so true; like not all trauma has physical, visible changes on one; well some do but not all do

Trosper

for me i never understood the "ocs before and after trauma" or "draw ur oc if they didnt have trauma" meme because the changes were so drastic?? all my ocs that had some kind of past traumas look the same whether or not they had it

Mutonian

^ Ooh. I've never understood that either. To me it only really makes sense if the character *had* to change something about themself because of their trauma (ex; having to completely change their identity to escape from someone/something that inflicted that trauma).

For the most part, I guess it's harmless, but I also don't think your character has to 'look' traumatized to have trauma. This is a very uh. Not finicky, but sensitive thing to portray and I think it's weird that you can immediately tell what character got the 'short end of the stick' most the time. I understand visual storytelling and wanting to communicate that aspect of your character through design, but I just wish these portrayals were more varied.

EspiKitsune

Don't get me wrong, I love a tragic backstory and using trauma to develop characters, but I'm also on the boat of not understanding why people use it as a point of pride? Like, shouldn't the goal be writing a well-written story and character, not just throwing every horrible thing you can think of into a mixing pot and hoping for the best??? And don't get me started on the ones who add a horrid event to their character's backstory and make a big deal of it that its traumatic but the character shrugs it off as no big deal. Trauma for the sake of trauma is honestly kind of concerning.

There's also this trend in some areas I've been around of making a contest out of which person has a character with the 'worst' trauma. Like an actual contest where the decided 'winner' gets some free art or something. They try and judge horrible things like its a game of poker and just.... It angers me in ways I can't quite explain or describe.

i dont like adopts with multiple pieces of art tbh. it just forces me to Pay More and it doesn't really add anything to the design itself

AlmondGames

^ omg same i thought no one else felt the same way. i prefer all my oc art to be ic anways so if i get a character secondhand that comes with art that does Not fit their personality / lore. im sending that art to the void. which makes me feel bad so i tend not to buy them at all

Skykristal

^ to be fair that's not an adopt, it's a character that's being sold. so you're into buying adopts rather than existing characters who (usually) come with art.

don't feel bad about it though. it's your character and you can keep what you want.
