Your favorite Underrated Video Games

Posted 5 years, 3 months ago (Edited 5 years, 3 months ago) by ParadiseLost

What I mean by "underrated video game" is, a video game which is uncommonly known/talked about but that you like a lot.

For example, I really like Azure Striker Gunvolt (and its sequel), but I always find myself having to explain it because it's so uncommonly heard of. The songs are great, the characters are cool. (Especially Teseo. He's easily the most annoying, not th emost difficult, but most annoying, boss, and the game treats him as such. Which is great. I mean, the guy TALKS IN MEMESPEAK.)

This can also extend to fandoms.

Here's just a thread for you (and I) to share and maybe talk about these things I guess.

There are just two rules:

1. Please don't argue, especially not over how uncommonly known something is. I used to think that Warrior Cats was not something commonly talked about. Then I met DeviantArt. Point is, what are things that YOU think are underrated, not things that factually are underrated, because the definition of "underrated" connotates an emotional OPINION. Opinions, contrary to popular belief, are not facts and can be changed, with varying levels of difficulty.

2. Black out sensitive material and unsavory behavior, please. You can do this by setting the highlight and the text color to the same value. Yes, you must change both.

Aside from the game(s) that stars the character in my avatar, I'm also a big fan of the Atelier series, which is why I was so happy to know there were Atalier titles arriving on the switch. :3

Hm... I also enjoy Azur Lane, though I don't know how 'underrated' it is these days, it is fairly popular now.

Bioshock

Does it even count as 'underrated', I'm not sure, I don't see many people talking about it ^^""

This game manages to be aesthetically pleasing, relaxing yet absolutely stressful, intense, and 'Oh my lord, is that a boy of silence, please dont-' all at the same time! I love it's old-fashioned, underwater theme and all the characters ( Both protagonists and antagonist ) within it; I enjoy replaying the game over and over, I never grow tired of it ^^

Fragile Dreams: Farwell Ruins of the Moon was an amazing gem on the wii. I loved the atmosphere and the character designs. It was a really beautiful emotional introspective game. I still remember individuals momentos I found after all these years. Not to mention the terrifying monster/ghost designs... Still not over some of those lmaoooo

aska-ray

OH also Eternal Sonata, aka the game with anime Chopin

LOOK

it's really cute! the battle system is FANTASTIC. the story is REALLY WEIRD until the rerelease made it make more sense a bit... bUT THATS NOT THE POINT THE POINT IS VIOLA HEALS YOUR PARTY BY SHOOTING ARROWS AT THEM

also spoilers for an old game no one played but claves also has 1 flashback and 3 monologues while dying and thats honestly impressive as hell

HeroofEnelios

aska-ray Ah yes! Eternal Sonata is extremely underrated. I personally very much enjoyed the game. I wish it would get some form of rerelease so more people could experience it. ;n;

diphenhydramine

PLEASE play hollow knight im BEGGING YOU this game is criminally underpriced at $15 with FOUR FREE DLC PACKS that team cherry released for it. AND an upcoming massive expansion with a new playable character as paid dlc

Yeeeeeeesss Eternal Sonata was fantastic. I’d definitely play it again if I got the chance. I loved all the characters so much...

danlion

Someone has already said it, but Hotel Dusk.

I never see anyone talk about Resistance: Fall of Man. It's an FPS game set during an alien invasion in the 1950s. If you're into alternate history, aliens, and military stuff, you should check it out.

Also..... Chameleon Twist.

it's cool seeing the thread show a lot of games i've legit never heard and seen of. i'll have to rifle through 'em and find ones that suit my tastes.

i also am realizing how little i dip my toes into the 'underrated' side of things whoops. not sure if i'm doing repeat offenders but:
-the tropico series
-seconding (thirding, forthing..?) ghost trick
-all of wadjet eye games tbh. i mean, i wouldn't go out of my way to shell money for them, but for how many games they make, they're really solid. (namely the blackwell series and shardlight)
-the fuckin' Caesar series. I LOVE THOSE GAMES FORGIVE ME. the amount of hours i've 'wasted' on Caesar III alone, holy fuck. LOL
-Space Quest series. super silly, super fun. kind of brutal if you're not used to sierra-style gameplay.
-who am I to not mention the Leisure Suit Larry series with this icon. but idk if it's underrated beyond it's reputation, per se. especially can recommend 5, 6, and 7. The VGA remake of 1 is amazing, too, can't discredit it... and the Braymin + Dana soundtrack from 3 is perfect enough to give it a special mention. these games are not for everyone though. : s

Someone mentioned Lost Kingdoms for Game Cube and I second that emotion. I fell deeply in love with that game and someone stole it from me before I had the opportunity to finish it.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky - One of three video games that successfully made me cry. Twice.

Eternal Sonata - I might not have enjoyed the game but that battling system though.

SOMEONE MENTIONED DRAWN TO LIFE OH BOY I have stories. xD I drew SO MANY MEMES into that game. So many old memes.

SOMA for sure. There's a reason this game has stuck with me so deeply since its release in 2015 -- it was also the first piece of media ever to actually bring me to tears. The writing is fantastic, and even knowing everything when playing it again, it still cuts in some places.

Basically, it's a horror game set underwater in the shell of a research facility. Without spoiling too much -- you play as Simon Jarrett, who went in to get a brain scan in 2015's Toronto and woke up at the bottom of the ocean, 100 years later. There are no real jumpscares, the only real horror comes from the story, and the existential questions intertwined throughout.

This game will probably change your life. It'll definitely make you rethink a lot of things about what it means to be yourself. It might give you an existential crisis -- I know I had one or five. It's got cute robots in it too.

I HIGHLY recommend playing it; it remains among my favorite games of all time, and what I would personally consider one of the best modern games to be released.
