Your favorite Underrated Video Games

Posted 5 years, 3 months ago (Edited 5 years, 3 months ago) by ParadiseLost

What I mean by "underrated video game" is, a video game which is uncommonly known/talked about but that you like a lot.

For example, I really like Azure Striker Gunvolt (and its sequel), but I always find myself having to explain it because it's so uncommonly heard of. The songs are great, the characters are cool. (Especially Teseo. He's easily the most annoying, not th emost difficult, but most annoying, boss, and the game treats him as such. Which is great. I mean, the guy TALKS IN MEMESPEAK.)

This can also extend to fandoms.

Here's just a thread for you (and I) to share and maybe talk about these things I guess.

There are just two rules:

1. Please don't argue, especially not over how uncommonly known something is. I used to think that Warrior Cats was not something commonly talked about. Then I met DeviantArt. Point is, what are things that YOU think are underrated, not things that factually are underrated, because the definition of "underrated" connotates an emotional OPINION. Opinions, contrary to popular belief, are not facts and can be changed, with varying levels of difficulty.

2. Black out sensitive material and unsavory behavior, please. You can do this by setting the highlight and the text color to the same value. Yes, you must change both.

I just wanted you to know that your post/thread convinced me to get the switch port bundle of azure striker gunvolt 1 and 2 👀💦

I had been eyeing it before but I saw it in store today during a sale and got swayed because I remembered your post

FURI!!!!

i LOVED THE HELL out of this game, and it doesnt get the love it deserves especially because their character designer was absolutely amazing-- tbh a big inspiration of mine. secondly the SOUNDTRACK on this game is.... mmm... MMMMM!! it murdered me and i have the whole thing on my phone because its so atmospheric and lovely. lastly uhhhhh boss rush bullet hell genre yum yum.

lots of people dont like furi from what i was reading with reviews before?? its weird i find it so hard to dislike.

honorable mention also to jade empire, i watched my gf play it and i liked it a lot but there is like NO FAN CONTENT of jade empire despite it being a highly loveable game.

last honorable mention goes to asura's wrath... i fuckingbdg love asura's design and voice actor. the game feels highly episodic and i love the aesthetics. ive never played it myself but watched a playthrough, all the characters made me so inspired and so did the atmosphere and power that all the characters possessed.

please give these games a chance and love them...

Kingfauna THERE'S A SWITCH VERSION?? MUST...RESIST...BUYING...

But really though, glad I got you to buy a game that I literally only found out about when I was surfing the 3DS eShop for cheap games that I might like and I saw ASGV2 and it looked cool. And for the record, especially ASGV2 with the ability to play as Copen and how that works, is very much an Anime Mega Man and I'm surprised more people haven't heard of it.

ethanol I played Fantasy Life for a bit when my friend let me borrow it!! I've yet to really sit down and play more (huge video game backlog) but I'm happy to see one of her favorite games is mentioned here!

Also shoutouts to the people who mentioned Hatoful Boyfriend, Ace Attorney, TWEWY, and Okami. :D

For people who liked Ace Attorney, I also recommend Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective! The pixel work is gorgeous, and the characters are just as great. It's made by the same person who created the AA series! I'm also a huge fan of Pyre, which is a game by the same studio who made Bastion and Transistor (also excellent games.) The artwork in all of them are fantastic, and the stories are very engaging.

I'm not sure if these games are really considered underrated, it's just that I don't see them talked about much ;w;

Yokai Watch: I think people mainly overlook Yokai Watch as a ripoff of Pokemon?? When honestly... When I played the first game, I do see differences. Heck, it may make more sense than Pokemon. Unlike Pokemon where you kinda take wild Pokemon out of their natural habitat to fight for the rest of their life, Yokai actually just give you their token of friendship (literally a token) so you can call upon them whenever you want. No capturing them or anything. And I honestly love the story and the bosses and... Oh gosh, I just wish people gave this game more credit ;w;

The Cat Lady/Downfall/Lorelai: I'm grouping these games together because they are all of the same series. I don't see this talked about often. If I remember correctly... The Cat Lady is a very good story about a woman who finds out that she is immortal one day. Downfall is about a guy who tries to find his wife. Lorelai... is upcoming, actually. But considering the last two games, it will definitely be deep and dark and full of symbolism. I love the mental health themes and "monsters" of these games.

Hatoful Boyfriend: It's a... pigeon dating sim. Need I say more? And the story gets even more intense in Bad Boys Love... I honestly like this game and I even got all the Steam achievements, lmao

Just Shapes and Beats: BULLET HELL WITH GOOD MUSIC. THAT IS ALL. ALSO, I LOVE THAT SAD SQUARE WITH ALL MY HEART. I'm planning on drawing human versions of every character too

•Rune Factory 4: BASICALLY HARVEST MOON, BUT WITH RPG ELEMENTS. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS GAME. I EVEN MADE AN ENTIRE JOURNAL ABOUT IT. I really hope Rune Factory 5 gets confirmed one day, since it was greenlit before Neverland went bankrupt and every employee migrated to Marvelous, AND the creator made his own studio.. There are a lot of things that I feel can be improved in Rune Factory 5. More dialogue, better RNG, etc. I love all the bachelors and bachelorettes <3 Hhhh it took me so long to figure out who to marry. That's why I started a harem with all the bachelors. (Yeah, you can do a harem in this game!) I eventually decided on the fox priest aka Leon <33 Sorry, tsundere horse (Dylas), if I can get me a man who looks like Leon AND also like his personality, I'm going for it!

•Story of Seasons Trio of Towns: The actual rebranded Harvest Moon! Addictive as hell, and I love Yuzuki and Inari with all my heart. You can marry Inari, a kitsune god, in this game, and I love it.

For mobile games, I really like Food Fantasy, Royal Chaos, Love 365, Love Nikki, CocoppaPlay, and LinePlay ;w;

Aaaand other seemingly underrated games I want to play are Oneshot, OFF, Mermaid Swamp, The Witch's House, Forest of Drizzling Rain, Irisu Syndrome, Alicemare, 1bitHeart, LilEat, Pocket Mirror, Liar Liar, Puyo Puyo Tetris, Okami, A Normal Lost Phone, GRIS, Detention, Bless You Rip, Fantasy Life, Stella Glow, 7th Dragon III, Dandelion, and Nameless ;w; I'll get back to you when I play these!

Kingfauna

Ah yes, mobile games

I think Terra Batttle could always use more love. I love love love all the gorgeous designs in that game. It's certainly not for everyone gameplay-wise but I dunno, I'm surprised it isn't more talked about in general.

ClyncyeRudje

My big three underrated titles are Crystalis (NES action RPG; shows its age but is still quite solid imo), Lost Kingdoms (GCN; one of the forgotten FromSoft titles, it's... the best description I have is card action game? There's nothing like it out there besides the sequel), and Baten Kaitos (GCN JRPG with a card-based battle system and infamously bad English voice acting; probably the least obscure of the three). All three are great and I happily recommend them to anyone who asks, but for a very long time I knew no one outside my family who had played them.

Heartbeat (by Chumbosoft) might also count as underrated, but it was fairly recently released so it's hard to say how much traction it'll get in the long run.

DRAWN (CLAPS) TO (CLAPS) LIFE!!!!!

I can not explain HOW MUCH I FUCKIN LOVE THIS GAME BABEY. One of my childhood games and still a decent challenge sometimes!!!!! although then again I suck ass at platforming games!

I personally like 2 better (prob bc it was easier on me and I don't think i ever beat the first game w/o help) BUT... THE GAMES R SO FUN... AND THE CONCEPT IS REALLY NICE!!

To summarize the concept, in drawn to life you play as an avatar that you create. (Yes. you can create it.) and you also create the objects that help you along the way! (Like platforms and stuff!) It's a really customizable experience and i love it to bits and the music. is so good (mainly the ones from drawn to life the next chapter but yeah). It also is more story-heavy than you'd expect and it's notorious for something i probably shouldn't say (it isn't like bad just spoilersmvfkmv)

i lost my chapter of the second game (dtl: the next chapter) and i miss it SO MUCH AND I WANT IT BACK?? BUT U NEVER REALLY SEE THEM AT LEAST WHERE I LIVE... and the ones online might be more than the original price

But the thing is, the company who made it became bankrupt (same ones that made scribblenauts i think? edit: no 5th cell was, it was one of the companies that helped with dtl) and sold the series to 505 games. (i think they made terraria and a lot of other noticeable games) so they can't make more games for it (some people apparently speculate 505 wants to do something with the series but they haven't yet so shrugs,,,)

i will always yell with you for drawn to life i love it. SO much. also uhhhh spongebob truth or square was a ds game (and apparently a lot of other platforms, wow?) i liked, it wasn't rlly quality and the sound effects im p sure are like. royalty free sound effects but yeah

also every pmd game and most pokemon spinoff games but i think those're known for being more underrated and therefore less underrated. BUT POKEMON RUMBLE BLAST WAS SO FUN AND I ALSO LOST THAT COPY AND I HATE MYSELF FOR LOSING SO MANY GAMES??!??!?!!?!?

Tendo64

Scribblenauts veteran over here! Scribblenauts Unlimited was my jam in 2014 :')

It used to be talked about somewhat often but everyone kinda forgot about it after Unmasked.

MasterShortpants

Oh man, how could I have forgotten Drawn to Life? Thanks for the reminder, knightofpherae ! I picked up a copy of the second game about a year ago or so online at a really good price and had it shipped to my house. Still haven’t gotten around to playing it because life has been busy, but I’m looking forward to the day I do! I have the Wii version as well, which... I’m not sure what the consensus on it is regarding its status among the series. Is it a spinoff? Is it a midquel, kind of like Chain of Memories is to KH1 and KH2? Is it an AU to the DS version? Do we just pretend it doesn’t exist? I’m not sure, and I never actually got far enough into it to see much of what it had to offer as a kid. But I do know I love me some Raposa and hope to revisit the series as a whole soon :’)

PS-X

BattleBlock Theater. The game isn't really known much anymore. I'd have to say it's the humor that got me. I'm going to add Portal in there, only because barely anybody talks about it anymore

Kihte

Dynasty Warriors! Or any Koei game, period! I love this game and it's similar titles so much and it hurts me that I can't fangirl over it with anyone! I'm REALLY hoping the new Overwatch event will rise some curiosity and it will get more people to look into it. Great hack and slash and the newer ones have great stories.

I was really into Blazblue at one point, but the lack of fans kinda made me drop out of it.

Also Okami and Legend of Kage 2. Just drowning in tears over here cause none of my friends know what these games are.

tekollin

Any of deep sea prisoner's works, they're so amazing but it's so hard to find people who are in this fandom ;w;
