commision pet peeves?

Posted 5 years, 1 month ago (Edited 2 years, 2 months ago) by Mochi

sorry to add to the string of pet peeve threads OTL. i just thought this would be a good place for people who buy commissions and who sell commissions to vent their frustrations. ill go first to break the ice.

when artists make you pay through friends and family, its soooo sketch. also when artist say theyll have your stuff done in one week...and never get back to you or do it way after a week. like its happened so many times and i feel like its a 'give me five minutes' type of thing. like just give me your real time frame, no need got give yourself a week if you know its not going to happen.

you all have very valid points! im going to add another complaint of mine since no one has said it yet.

when people whitewash my ocs. sidif thats the main thing that annoys me. like their skin color is very clear in the ref, why make their skin lighter?

edit: nvm someone already said it lol

new rules: please dont be transphobic or racist, i cant believe i have to say this but seriously, what the heck

when you commission someone and they don't just.. use the colors provided on the reference? it might just be me but i feel weird having commissioned an artist and.. they use alternate colors than what is provided? i understand changing them for a lighting or effects added but if its just a flat or cleanly shaded piece then.. why

when selling comms i'm exhausted of people giving me low quality references. its so hard for me to draw if i can't tell what the character looks like!! by LQ i mean having a JPEG (png gang best gang) , tiny image size, or taking a low quality picture if their ref is on paper. ETA heavily watermarked stuff as well!

As a commissioner, it kinda annoys me when the artist takes my commission as a way to test out new style/coloring/etc. without clearing it with me first. I've only had it happen once but it's like....if I'm paying you to draw in a specific style, I'm kinda...expecting that style? Like if you tell me before hand 'hey do you mind if I try ____" then thats fine! but like...communicate. Also when artists don't have their commission prices clearly listed out and it's something you have to Ask them about specifically, I recently asked an artist for a quote and I Know it's gonna be on the pricy side, I just wish they told me a ballpark range of what to expect so I'm not wasting their time >_>;

As a person that takes on commissions, when people aren't clear about what they want. I actually really dislike having absolute artistic freedom since it doesn't limit my thoughts down or I don't know where to start. It's easily solved by asking people what they want/their character personality but I have an easier time with commissions from people who Know what they want upfront - especially with nsfw art. That and people who give no details at all. A recent commission I had the person said "i want the monster form to look like a monster and the human form to look human." like...thanks that tells me nothing.

 also this is the ridiculous pet peeve, but people who sell 'sketch' commissions that are completely lined and colored with flats. How is that a sketch??? I know people have different quality of finishes for stuff but I just...can't see those as sketches at all unless its for an underpainting or something.

edit: ALSO people who are a little too friendly or think that by constantly commissioning me they're a friend. I'm friendly bc its a business transaction, don't try to continue conversing with me casually :l that's more of a me thing because I'm kinda withdrawn and don't really like talking to people one-on-one and I don't want people thinking because I'm nice it means we're best friends.

husbrandos honestly ive seen people say the colours thing once or twice in the past and i don't really get it? the way i see it, if i'm commissioning an artist i'm commissioning them to see them draw my character with their skillset, and colour theory etc is part of that skillset, as long as theyre not literally changing the character's colours to incorrect ones (like drawing a black haired character with brown hair or changing eye colour or something). expecting artists to colourpick is to me almost the same as expecting them to draw in the same art style as the reference? like, the colours someone tends to use/ways they tend to shift colours are absolutely a part of an individual artists style and look to their art.

as long as they're being faithful to the character, i'd genuinely prefer artists i commission to tweak colours to make them look good/mesh in their style. and as someone who does commissions, my pieces always look way better when i do, and i do it by default if its not requested otherwise (+ i generally expect other artists to do the same).

(ik this is just a personal peeves thread tho! i dont mean to argue so much as just like... im curious about the rationale behind characters needing to be drawn with the exact same hex codes every time)

I don't buy commissions (even though I want to ;A;), but I sell! I haven't come across many commissions that have annoyed me really, but here's some points that WOULD annoy me!

- Actually this happens kinda frequently: when I send you the finished artwork, PLEASE REPLY lmao. Even if it's just to say "received!" or something! When I don't get a reply, my anxiety kicks into HIGH GEAR thinking that something went wrong or you hate it. I also use replies to know when I can post it! I like to make sure everything is a-okay before I go posting things.

- Not really a peeve but when artistic license is left totally up to me. See I'm REALLY not that imaginative and I'm so terrified of getting details wrong.. I really really prefer and appreciate when details are given to me, even specific poses or the like. I realize there's a lot of artists out there who are probably the opposite of me and don't want so much restriction, but for me, it's helpful in knowing that you'll get exactly what you want. I also just love getting to know people's characters. ;u; So I really enjoy when people link their character's toyhouse profiles (that are filled with info!!)

- Kind of with the last point: I really hate when I'm only given ONE ref and it's barely legible. Like I said, I'm terrified of getting details wrong so it makes it a thousand times harder on me when I have to squint, zoom in, or worse, hope for the best when it comes to refs. I can get away with a lot considering I do pixel work and most of it is small, so a lot of details will get lost anyway, however when I can't really tell how the hair is styled or the patterns all melt into each other or something, I panic a little.

- When people CHANGE THE FINISHED PRODUCT THEMSELVES. (This has happened once.) [ANNOYED.gif] Listen, I understand you might not want to seem annoying to me asking for change after change because I might not understand what you're asking for, BUT I PROMISE you're not being annoying. I'd rather get it right. But never in any circumstance is it okay to just CHANGE IT YOURSELF. I literally only found out because I went to update my DA page since I purchased Core again and I put all my works and link back to the character creators... and upon finding said creator saw that their icon looked DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I GAVE THEM. (and not by a little). I'M STILL SALTY.

Not having a visible commission queue. It's super helpful knowing how many people are ahead of me so I can judge when I might be getting art in and don't have to keep bothering an artist for updates.

when i commission someone to draw a flat-chested woman and they draw her like 3 cup sizes bigger for no reason :|

my sona has a lot of art like this which just confuses me. even when i wrote "shes flat-chested" directly on her ref it just kept blatantly getting ignored? like... where are you getting this from??? how can i possibly make it any more clear if i directly tell you her chest is small, i tell you her cup size, and her reference is accurate? ive even given clear visual examples of other drawings of her and still had them ignored

Getting passive-aggressive comments along the lines of it's a shame you don't take paypal I would of love to buy art from you guess I'll look elsewhere. It's actually on my bank for refusing to let me apply for a credit card because my job is "too irregular" (even though I've been doing the same job on a steady seasonal rotation for 3 years now) but sure try to guilt trip me for something beyond my control. It wouldn't bother me half as much if people doing it weren't so passive-aggressive and snarky. It's even more annoying when I have a notice up explaining WHY I can't take real currency and I still get these passive-aggressive notes/comments. Also that I can't find any information on if debit cards are secure on paypal because google searching just brings up how to set up direct debit with a credit card. It's annoying because if debit cards are secure and safe to use on paypal I could of been taking real currency commissions much sooner.

When people note me asking me to draw in a style completely different to what I draw with. Especially annoying if I've already got a notice up saying that you're paying for me to draw your character in my style and I do not imitate other styles but I'm still getting commission requests asking me to draw in a specific anime style. Tbh I find it rude if the style I'm being asked to imitate is a DA artist that I happen to know does commissions at a more expensive rate because it always comes off as I would rather have their art but you're the cheaper option so you'll do

When I finish a commission and they wait until I hand the work over to say they don't want it anymore. Admittedly this has only happened the once but because it happened when I'd not long gotten back into the swing of shading things again so everything was really slow (I had stated as much upfront) it meant I ended up wasting so much time and energy on that drawing so I am still salty about it.

I find coming up with poses for my own characters hard enough it can take up to 2 working days to come up with something I wanna draw so one of my commission/trade rules is I require an emotion and an action to use as a jumping off point. 2 words. It can be simple as listing the words reading and irritated. Being specific with what you want actually really helps and speeds things up considerably. Even after explaining that I've I still gotten orders along the lines of "idk draw him looking cute" which for me is too broad since what I define as cute may not be what you define as cute and it doesn't give me that starting point I need.

HEAVENDELUXE

when an artist gets my characters face totally wrong. im very particular about who i commission for what character these days because of this; but i only have so many round faced anime lookin boys in stock, so its really important to me when i do take the risk and get a pic done of an older character, or a character with more distinct racial features, or a character with unique facial structure, that it actually turns out lol. nothing is worse than going in excited to finally get a piece of one of those ocs only to get back something that looks totally wrong ;___;

AlleycatIrony

i said it on the other pet peeves thread, but when someone's commissioning me and they don't communicate so idk what they want, and no matter how much i ask they seem to dodge the questions 😭

and thank god this has only happened a few times, but when i'm commissioning someone and they whitewash my character and use 'lighting' as an excuse, and when it looks like they looked at a reference once and made the rest up themselves
i'm an artist too fam, can't use that lighting excuse on me bc i know it's bs, esp if all the other colours aren't white-bright? and they make all the features 'caucasian'? just say ur racist and go, or if u didn't wanna do it don't accept my character and ask for a different one instead! and don't get pissy and refuse to change it when i ask? like i paid for that i should be allowed to ask for changes if u get things so drastically wrong!
it's why i'm nervous giving my non-white OCs up for getting drawn but thankfully ppl on TH are good
