Calendar & Seasons

One year in the world of the Calamies has a duration of 360 days, while one day lasts exactly 24 hours. Calamies don't have months and seperate the year in four seasons - Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. Each season has a duration of 90 days.
The year starts with the 12th Winter, which is equivalent to the 1st January in our world; and ends with the 11th Winter, which is equivalent to the 31st December.

The Four Seasons

The four seasons are seperated in Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn. When enumerating the four seasons, Calamies usually start with Winter, followed by Spring, Summer and Autumn. In the English language, Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn are supposed to be written with a capital, because they are actual names; like May, June etc.

The Calamies invented an own language, which is why they also have own wordsfor each season. Zimawi means Winter, Fjaro means Spring, Sletor means Summer and Herpo means Autumn. In relation to the weather, the seasons are very similar to the European ones.

Even though some seasons have a negative impact on the Calamies' everyday lives, they make the best out of each one and, after thousands of years of evolution, the Calamies learned how to live with every season and it's unique facets.

The weather each season is known for usually appears from the 28th to the 63rd of each month. On any other day, the weather is a mixture with the nearest season.

Example On 11th Winter, the weather is a mixture between Winter- and Autumn weather. On the contrary, on 82nd Winter, the weather is a mixture between Winter- and Spring weather. On the other hand, there usually is a pure Winter weather on the 43rd Winter.

Winter (Zimawi)

Winter (Zimawi in Calamian) is the coldest of the four seasons. On an average Winter day, the sun shines about 4-6 hours, which causes temperatures of usually -8 °C (17,6 °F) up to -21 °C (-5,8°F). The coldest Winter day, that ever has been measured, had a record temperature of -39,2 °C (-38,56 °F).

Spring (Fjaro)

Spring (Fjaro in Calamian) is, besides Autumn, the mildest of the four seasons. On an average Spring day, the sun shines about 7-9 hours, which causes temperatures of usually 8 °C (46,4 °F) up to 17 °C (62,6 °F).

Spring, also known as “The Blooming Season”, is the most popular season among the Calamies, because it’s the season with the most benefits. In addition, the weather is very calm most of the time; the wind is very calm, the sun is shining and it’s not raining too much. Also, there’s always a very sweet and fresh scent in the air, coming from the blooming flowers and trees.

Spring is well provided with a lot of outside activities, in which the Calamies participate during the holidays. The most popular holiday during that season is “The Big Flyout”, where the Calamies fly to the neighbored Calami tree and sow seeds of the Selafi plant. (More information to the holidays can be found down below).

During Spring, most Calamies are busy with sowing plants they can later harvest, in order to have enough food for the year. The Flying Guard is mostly busy with exploring the area aground, while the alchemists are collecting all the herbs and natural ingredients, since Spring is the richest season for that.

Summer (Sletor)

Summer (Sletor in Calamian) is the hottest of the four seasons. On an average Summer day, the sun shines about 11-14 hours, which causes temperatures of usually 20 °C (68 °F) up to 28 °C (82,4 °F). The hottest Summer day, that ever has been measured, had a record temperature of 39 °C (102,2 °F).

Autumn (Herpo)

Autumn (Herpo in Calamian) is, besides Spring, the mildest of the four seasons. On an average Autumn day, the sun shines about 5-7 hours, which causes temperatures of usually 4 °C (39,2 °F) up to 12 °C (53,6 °F).

Holidays

Holidays are a very important part of the Calamies' lives, because all of them have a deep meaning for their culture and serve the purpose of keeping a tight bond between families, friends, relatives and other creatures around them. It's important to mention that holidays do not have any religious background, since religions don't exist in the Calamies' culture.

Calamies are very social creatures and grow lonely without any conspecifics, which is why enjoying to spend time with other Calamies is deep in their instinct. Apparently, it's no surprise why the holidays are so important for them.
