Everyone is familiar with species like vampires and werewolves, but the way people incorporate them into their worldsettings can vary greatly.

How do you personally portray already existing mythological creatures and species in your characters/settings? How do they differ from their original myths and/or lore, and what do they have in common, if anything?

Just make sure to be polite! Whether people portray a creature as cute or terrifying, they should be respected. This thread is not a contest over who does it the best!

I've still got a lot to figure out but I've been making some demon lore! At the moment the two biggest plot points are demon's last names and how breeding between them affects their temperment.

A demon's last name is usually tied to how they act and what powers they have. The 7 deadly sins are the oldest and most powerful demon families while spin offs of those belong to everyone else. My oc Danica's last name is Tristis which (should be) depression translated from Latin. This means her family gives off a depressing aura and are in a constant state of melancholy. The affect of their last name could be canceled out by other demon blood, but her family has lived in the human realm for a long time and they haven't bred with other demons. Human blood dilutes demon blood at a much slower rate than other demon blood. In Danica's case, this means while the rest of her family are mostly unbothered by feeling so numb and sad all the time, Danica wishes she could feel happy and fit in. Her demon qualities from Trisits have lost some affect which makes Danica more aware of how she feels compared to the rest of her family (if that makes sense).

Other demons like Hobart, have lived in Hell all their lives and have blood from all kinds of demon families. Because of this, his last name Inprobus, which means rebel, doesn't make him behave the name would suggest. Demons have longer life spans than humans and so their blood isn't diluted so fast since most demons are irresponsible and have a hard time raising an offspring to adulthood. There are demons who are more human like in nature and can be responsible parents and even citizens. These demons usually try to escape to the human realm, where they are faced with prejudice for being demons. For the moment the reason demons can even live with humans is because, the agreement between demons and humans happened recently in an event similar to the Civil Rights movement. (I haven't thought a lot about that part yet)

Haha I hope this made some kind of sense! I've been having a lot of fun with this lore for demons and my next step is to tackle angels!

Vampires? The sun does not hurt them. They don't burn to death when stepping out into the sun. The only thing that it does is that it exhausts them more. Also vampires are more prone to sunburns lol.

Besides that, they also don't die when touching silver or having wood rammed through their heart. The second one would kill anyone, anyway. They can eat garlic.

When it comes to putting a spin on these creatures, there IS a universe thing that I haven’t put much out there in terms of writing at all, and I haven’t written about it that much at all either, just a fun mind exercise thing.

Werewolves; A large, furred alien species, these are mainly nocturnal, hunting at night. When hunting, they can’t use their disguise. This ‘disguise’ of theirs is basically shapeshifting, such as into a human. They have a special venom that, when one bites another, if the one being bitten is disguised, the disguise will dispel, making it SEEM like a werewolf biting someone is turning someone into another werewolf, when they were both werewolves the whole time. As for appearance, they actually don’t have big external ears. They have lizard-like ears with flaps that LOOK like ears in the front to protect from the dusty winds of their home planet. They have no eyelids, instead having a big transparent protective layer above their eyes. Their nose is more goat-like than canid, and they have stubby tails. On their home planet, they’re one of the biggest places for the galactic meat industry.

Hydras; Imagine a big, fluffy, lizard polar-bear thing. Now imagine you cut its head off. Uh oh! Turns out this alien species is like a starfish! Now you have two, once the head grows back and once the decapitated head grows a new body. They have six black and beady eyes, and two long nostrils hidden under their thick fur. They have a hunched posture, relatively stubby limbs, and a long thick tail. All females have a clutch of ONE child so any ‘siblings’ they may have are actually from accidents where they may have gotten decapitated and their head grew a new body. Their strength makes them common in the construction industry, and their polar climate makes them common in polar expeditions on other planets. They don’t have much variation in how they look, so their fighting tactics often include confusing the enemy on who’s who.

Vampire; A large, bat-like species who cannot fly, these do not NEED blood to survive, but DO need some of it when they’re pregnant (like a mosquito). Daylight doesn’t make them puff into ash, but they DO have eye sensitivity to light and need as much SPF as someone who is ginger. They’re allergic to garlic because they’re strict carnivores. Their blood-thinning venom makes them desired in medical industries.

Phoenix; A medium, amphibian species, these live not on a planet, but on a ring surrounding a gas giant. They have extremely high internal body heat that needs to be vented via vents on their backs, which propel them forward in flight. They do not ‘burn’ people, BUT they ARE covered in a corrosive toxin that will eat away and flesh and cause immense pain when touched. Females will die and burst into ash from too high body heat after laying eggs. They’re often found in the assassination industry for their poisons.

Dragons, Wyverns, and Serpents; All descended from the same species, these three mega-empires are now separate species, and compete with one another a LOT. Dragons are like the usual western dragons, though have big meat hands which they walk on with the knuckles. Wyverns have four sets of wings, the front smaller pair used as arms. The serpents have four arms. Each species has six limbs. All of them have ONE defining feature that means they are ‘true dragons’ or ‘draconic’. They can drink their soda, which contains a bacterium which helps with fire breathing, and is a huge toxin to every other species. If you can’t drink it, you’re not a dragon!

That’s all I’m writing for now; there IS more but that’s all I’m wanting to show for now!
