I’m not sure if this has been made before, I think I remember seeing someone talk about it once but it didn’t get as popular. So I’d like to know what you guys think about it, give your opinions down below!

by trading rules, i mean people making strict rules about other people trading characters they previously owned. Rules like “if you trade this design to someone else, you are obligated to let me know/obligated to give them back to me” or “you cant change this design whatsoever or change it too much”.

I personally dislike this mindset a lot. It’s like they’re putting certain boundaries onto a character they don’t even own , it ruins the fun. Why trade a character away if you’re so keen on protecting it at all costs? Once you give a character away to someone else, it 100% belongs to that person, you can’t tell them what to do with it because you dont own it anymore, that’s just how ownership works IMO. I personally just ignore those rules, unless it’s a closed species or if it’s currently being co-owned with someone else.

Honestly HATE it, like you put it up for sale/trade for a reason, I personally would avoid people with a mindset like this like the plague. Once traded/sold away its no longer yours, the only right you have is the right to the artwork itself NOT the character, if you wanted to keep it you should have at least thats what I think they should have done.

Its way the only rule I really have is like don't resell/sell it more than you bought it for unless extra art was inculded. Yk the typical rules, I already know i lost ownership of the design once it went to someone else. Like its just a very bad mindset in general. As you said it ruins the fun.

Prehistoric_Salad yeah I can totally understand if theyd want to impose some important rules like the prices n stuff, that totally makes sense! Same with if the design gets stolen or if anything else happens to it, that I can understand.

I do totally understand if the person needs to get rid of their characters if they’re in need of money. I see it often and I can totally understand them doing so since they were FORCED to sell them. Though if the person is just trading their characters away and expects every person to let them know and give that character to them instead of letting others swap for a more interesting character, that I don’t really agree with.

for designs, yeah I guess thats a good point, it would be kinda weird to just buy a design and just ENTIRELY change it into a whole new concept. But if it’s something like a hair style change,  an appearance change, or even a species change, what’s the harm in it? I’ve seen a lot of designers or people freak out over people changing an adopt they sold and I never understood why.

strict rules suck. makes owning that oc feel more like babysitting than actually, you know, owning it. what's the point of selling a design if you're gonna be all uppity about it and not give the owner creative and actual freedom lmao

most rules suck in general tbh. like not selling for more than bought even with extra art is a big pet peeve of mine. you say the art the person drew for that oc is worthless?? bullshit.

but some rules make sense, like not reselling for more than what you bought if you didn't add any art (not including picrews and dollmakers)

What I like about Toyhouse is that I can look up the profiles of designs I've sold and see if they've traveled around or changed. Quite frankly if you don't muddle around with a design you bought, what did you buy it for? And if you resell something I made and it turned a profit, you should come back and buy more wholesale sparkledogs and flip my inventory for me.

I personally don't like to see NSFW content for characters I create, but if you own it, you own it. If I tried to make a rule for it it'd be impossible to enforce.

I dislike it. Unless you clearly co-own and not fully own a character or other things have been discussed (for example when it's about an original species who does have a few rules , especially when it comes to redesigning) I find these rules more than silly. You have the rights to the character, not the people who owned the character before you. It's like you get a puppy and the people who sold them to you want them to only wear a blue collar or tell you to only give them a very specific name.

Jules

I don't like it, especially seeing as how I can quickly click with a character and then very quickly un-click.

The only restriction I understand is; Don't change the design beyond recognition. It always bugs me when people don't do follow this. I made a character ages ago that I gave away. Almost 4 months ago I got a request for creator credit for that character who now was a NSFW character. I completely disowned that character, PLEASE DON'T DO THIS GUYS! I don't want that character connected to me in anyway.

The following is my opinion please don't try to fight me on this

I redesign most of the characters I get sometimes to the point of them not being recognizable I would never buy an oc that would force me to keep the same design. But then again I very rarely buy characters I mainly just design stuff. Also I don't deal with conflict very well and someone dming to change something that I now own just sounds like too much.
