How do you tag your characters?

Hi! So I've just made a tag directory for easier navigation through my OC collection, and I was wondering: how do you guys tag your characters? Which kind of traits do you tag? Which ones would you never tag? Do you have any "joke" tags? Do you use tags a lot or not at all?

I thought it could be interesting to share our ways of using this functionality, maybe it will give some ideas or inspiration to TH members who might be struggling with tags!

Yeah I changed my tags from the two. Still keeping a basic system.
Over or under 18 physically.
Species, though Anthros are kept to just anthro. Figure that works well enough to filter out anthro for those not into it.
Subspecies if applicable, IE a Ghost or Vampire. My elemental anthros are given Elemental as a sub tag despite that being their primary species, it's for filtering sake.

This is how I do it for everyone:

  • Species (human, anthro, etc.; if they're animal based I also tag which animal)
  • Major colors in their color palette (up to 3)
  • If they were an adopt (and the creator's username, if they were)
And for my mains:
  • If they're a sona
  • Whether they're an adult or a minor
  • If they're ready for RPing

honestly i don't really use a lot of tags, i just have some based on species and a "needs art" tag ~

i do really like the tagging system on here though, since it helps create a neater way of organizing characters without having a million folders

I tag them based on their gender and species, but I’m probably going to start adding joke tags as well. It helps people understand the character without reading through their bio, in my opinion. I personally get a laugh out of creative tags ^^

I don't have one consistent use for them so i'll just list and explain some of them

  • 'sona
  • main (fav ocs)
  • gore ok (for anyone who wants to draw them + they might have gore art in their gallery)
  • fan character
  • multiverse (bc i shove em' in multiple stories/worlds a lot)
  • joke oc
  • adopted
  • wip
  • art needed (i haven't made a proper ref or pic of them)
  • art wanted (i want to make or get more art of them)
  • bio (might change this one later but basically they have some story or bio written abt them
  • retired (don't use anymore)
  • not an oc (bc sometimes i use "character" pages as something different, like a gallery or au info dump)
I also tag what worlds they're from (ex: if they're i fan character i tag their fandom, or if they're part of one of my storylines i'll tag that) I'm actually going to add more now that i'm thinking abt it lol

I tag them by gender and physical age, but I also do give them the following tags:

Can you don't - I don't know why I called this tag that, but I use this tag for Story Characters, Joke Characters, and Characters that I personally like more or feel too attached to. Characters with this tag are not up for offer.

Meh - These are characters that I'm just not very attached as I used to. If I feel like I can't do them any further justice, then they might be sent over to my alt. account, but I'm not giving them away for anything.

W.I.P - I don't know why I have this tag, but at least a few of my characters have "complete profiles", but for the rest, however, I'm too lazy to finish them, so meh.

Male / Female / Sexless - Self explantory lol

Anthro / Feral - For most of my nonhumanoid characters (Read: furries)

Atbsbo - Personal tag just to keep track of who others can see. I tend to hide characters sometimes and need this to see what my profile looks like to others

Novatt / Furball - CS tags

GORGEOUS BABE - STACY EXCLUSIVE

Overall I try to keep them to a minimum. The most tags I'd be comfortable having on my own characters is like... 5. They're mostly used bc I cant ever decide who I want people to draw so I just throw in a general tag like "oh heres all the grils, pick any1 bb"

oOF i have a slightly weird system but like mainly it kinda goes like this:

  • boy/girl - for the longEST TIME I DIDNT TAG GIRLS CAUSE I HAVE WAY TOO MANY OF EM but i decided to recently!! any of those who like dont fit those aren't tagged with either (like if their species is sexless, they don't identify as male or female, etc)
  • species - things like mermaid, fairy, angel, human, half-human, stuff like that! pretty self explanatory oof, i also have an overall tag of "species" for closed and open species (then they're also tagged with "closed species" or "open species" or "semiopen species")
  • adopted - this tag is for characters i adopted from others, obviously oof. i don;t have an "originals" tag, you can just see all the characters w/o the adopted tag are ones i made myself
  • generator - a few of my characters are game-generated, and while i have some specific tags like "dolldivine," "gaia" and "dream selfy," most are just "misc maker"
  • dead lmao - the tag for my dead characters, which acTUALLY ISNT A LOT and is mildly disappointing since weird??? most of my characters do die??? i guess some just dont stay dead so that's why? or im just bad at tagging oof
  • giving away - only applies to characters in my uft/ufs folder. i dont tag "freebie" or "sale" or "trade" specifically since it kinda entices people to click on the character (i hope) if they dont already know what the price is
  • story/squad tags - a few of these who are part of a main story, so to connect em i have the tag. i also have a few squads and i like to sort it by that (for example, for some of my gem ocs, i have a lot of them who were made in a defective kindergarten, so i have them tagged as "defective kindergarten squad")
  • other comments - VERY RARELY will i sometimes put random extra comments/tags like "vicious" or "BITCH" if the character warrants it or i just feel like it

I have a fairly elaborate tagging system. I have well over 300 ocs so this helps me find specific kinds. I already have things organized using the folders so that I can find specific characters but the tags allow me to find generalized selections for when I don't have a specific char in mind.

Maybe I'm in the mood to draw a feral or more specifically a Female, feral, Feline. With my tagging system it's a breeze to find.

Honestly, I don't care much about tags. I've also hidden the tag function in my character folders. (Custom coding) I do put stuff such as "seeking art" or "important" to some characters. Also their species and if they're anthro or feral, a main etc. Which are shown when you visit a character profile.

If I had A LOT of characters I would probably use the tag function more serious. But I have all my characters sorted in subfolders, which is more useful and clean for me atm.

I have an lgbt tag just because i was curious how many i had. not a lot but i guess to be fair most of my characters arent developed enough to have a sexuality lol

the rest of my tags art preferred, animal, and anthro are for art games so I can just link all the tagged characters together
