PSA: stolen arts being sold as NFT

Posted 2 years, 4 months ago (Edited 2 years, 4 months ago) by eussless

Gentle reminder that you DO NOT need to bump this thread by posting "bumps" too often... If you want to bump, just use the bump button, this isn't market forum.

Update: NotDamien posted a good advice about how to properly watermark your arts. Please check it out before asking about your own watermark in case nobody can answer you promptly.

- Another guide to take down your stolen art without sending phone number/address. Another suggestion is to write Cease & Desist Letter which will take down the stolen NFT rather swiftly.

- If you have twitter, it is best to follow updates from @ nfttheft as it's an account dedicated for it.

As you may already know cryptocurrency, especially NFT (non fungible token) is currently rising. Which also brings another issue of art thefts. Many of the accounts stole art and sold them as NFT. This is one of them: link .

These thieves mostly took arts from deviantart and recently reached toyhouse, even complete with the watermark. So I suggest everyone to do any options below:

  • Properly, uglily, watermark your arts and adopts.
  • If you don't like the idea, then make them authorized only. Although this one has a flaw (?) if someone browses through an artist's art page, the arts from hidden galleries are still shown unless you set each tab as private.
  • So, the best choice is to thumbnail only your art plus making the thumb watermarked.

Unfortunately if your art/adopt are found on OpenSea site, it will be difficult to issue a report as they have been actively "supporting" theft and making reporting more difficult with little to no response. Below are some useful links to report or takedown arts stolen as NFT.

Reminder that it is best to NOT report through DMCA since you need to fill personal information that can be used to doxx you by the thieves.

I probably will not actively update this thread with more theft issues found, as I only wanted to inform everyone to be careful. However, if anyone wants to keep updating more thief accounts to report then please do so in the replies. I appreciate every update about new ways to report as well. Hope none of you will be a victim, stay vigilant.

JuniperW it means the thread was probably too old to bump, so they had to post - or at least, thats what it usually means!

What is PSA? More precisely, what is this abbreviation? Excuse me, I'm sitting with a translator

Sheep Cottean actually now that I think about it maybe something along the lines of 'NFTrade' or 'NFTr' would kind of work? Still a nifty short term but might clear some confusion just in case

or N4T? :0c

i dont use either term but i always got the impression that nft and nfs had slightly different meanings. "n4t" sounds like a good replacement though. i have wondered if some outsiders will look at toyhouse and think a bunch of characters are non fungible tokens when they are actually just not for trade

To my understanding (as someone learning about copyright in the professional spectrum under AIGA and other regulations), NFTs are still a widely illegal system. In the sense that they're regarded as copyright infringement if these coin thumbnails are from people who don't want their work to be considered public domain. Most adult NFT buyers would ideally avoid any copyrighted property if they know what copyright can do (i.e., if proper research was made). Still, others are not as calculated about the possible losses this kind of business may generate. That is, especially considering that one established copyright symbol over characters and art could land them in court & have them fined out of their earned money. This protection still applies if the person hasn't yet registered said art or characters under legal protection lists. As long as the person has plans to copyright these characters legally in the future (and finalizes the process before legal action), they can stop a lucrative activity that uses their work. After all, anyone aware of the system knows that ignoring infringement notices equates to a suing issue. However, fees fluctuate based on the kind of damage this infringing caused. That is as far as I've been able to glean with a professional in this field. Hopefully, this NFT problem won't spread since this site is already well-established with registration keys (although some get awarded for free).

Well, DeviantArt has a new feature where they search any copies, traced artwork, and NFTs of your arts and inform you about them.

anybody who has DeepSeaHorror fantroll designs should check opensea and file a takedown or a google DMCA. I found a couple of mine :(

Its really annoying to see these NFTs constantly steal art than act like they "are for artists."

Another issue is Picrews. I had an OC I made from a picrew a couple months ago and went to credit it for my TH. I noticed it was taken down so I just checked their twitter that was linked sharing the picrew. Apparently they took it down because people kept using the picrews to make NFTs. We just can't have nice things.
