PSA: PayPal Fees (DO's and DONT'S) + TUTORIAL

Posted 7 years, 2 months ago (Edited 6 years, 9 months ago) by sonyaism

EDIT: Unsure where to put this, a follower of mine told me "General" would be good enough. lol

Hey everyone. Recently, I was in a situation concerning PayPal fees that left me salty.

So, being salty, I posted a PSA on my Toyhou.se bulletins.

Then, being even saltier, I updated and moved my PayPal Tutorial (used to be on dA) which I am here to share with you today!

Before I get started, I would like to just address PayPal Fees.

It goes against PayPal's User Agreement to charge
your customer/buyer PayPal's Trasaction Fees.

International Transactions

Please be aware that as of late 2016, PayPal has installed auto-currency exchange.
Please refer to my guide on Weebly on how to deal with it.
Please check in with people you are buying from outside the country if they want their money in USd or their home-currency.
ALSO, fees are higher than normal fees when sending abroad.

Transaction Fees

DO'S
DONT'S
  • DO know that asking someone to cover your PayPal Fees will get you in trouble.
    • They can limit or freeze your account which means you won't be able to receive or spend funds, depending.

  • DO know that it is against PayPal's User Agreement to charge someone PayPal's Transaction Fees.

  • DO raise your prices discreetly if the fees are that much of a hassle.

  • DO not ask for your buyer to cover your PayPal Fees.
  • DON'T use "Friends & Family" payment method to avoid fees.
    • As a Seller: Potentially can limit/freeze your account.
    • As a Buyer: The seller is able to scam you because this does not offer "PayPal Protection" which means you are unable to open a dispute against them if they run off with your money.

  • DON'T ask your buyer to cover your PayPal Fees.

  • DON'T ask your buyer to cover your PayPal Fees.

  • DON'T ask your buyer to cover your PayPal Fees.
Note: If you were someone that added an extra dollar or more when sending money, that can be considered a "tip."

You put extra money onto the transaction out of your own volition. No one asked you to do so.

If the seller did ask you to cover the fees, then they are violating PayPal's User Agreement which you, under no circumstance, should be covering the fees.

Tysm for this info <3 Just before seeing this, I took Paypal fee coverage out of my TOS because I realized it was kind of silly to make the buyer cover such a small fee, so now I just keep the tip button on to leave it up to the buyer. But I didn't actually know it was against Paypal's TOS. So glad I know that now even if I don't do that anymore.

fawnpup pinging myself for the day i'll start accepting money as currency for commissions lol

Rextra_Roardinary

So if Im commissioning for something, even if it's just $5, I should use goods and services?

Froggychairzone

So uhh, if I see someone asking for payment through friends & family on the forum do I message them to help in case they didn't know that was prohibited or I should just let them be?

This was a great and informative read (also read through all the comments haha), I never asked for buyers to pay the fee... I just never could; but wondered a while ago if I should when I noticed a handful of other artists doing it. I saw it a lot so I figured it was a common and acceptable thing? I guessed since they were selling their art anyway that the buyers must not mind paying the extra money, but seeing here how many people are thrown off by this disproves my thought.

Whenever I buy artwork I usually always voluntarily cover the fee though, all the people I've purchased characters from do not ask for it, but I do anyway because I want them to get paid in full for their hard work! Thank you for this, no matter how old it is it's still helpful!

Pixel_ you can do either! But the fees have to be paid as 'goods and services' and not 'friends and family'! Business accounts vs Personal have their own pros and cons I highly suggest doing thorough research into both before deciding.

PayPal will be upping their fee on August 2nd.

https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/19/22541286/paypal-raise-seller-fees-transactions-online-payments (linking this for a nice and simple breakdown)

v From Paypal's site, here is the official information v
More details: https://www.paypal.com/us/business/pricing
https://www.paypalobjects.com/marketing/ua/pdf/US/en/feepages-080221.pdf

The fee will highly depend on some factors so be sure to read on this and raise prices that are necessary. It's better to have whole prices such as 15.00 as an example rather than including cents.

I have a question, what if the person plays in family and friends with out you knowing ?

It just happened to me and my payment has been on hold for a wile

god-of-rats

_ouij_ I would see if you can refund the payment and ask the buyer to redo the payment using the goods and services option ^^
