Astrid

Astrid ignored the sting on her neck as she ran away from the blight wights. That last one had hit hard, that piece of junk, and she was more than pissed. She couldn't dwell on it though, his agonizing scream had warned other monsters and Astrid couldn't afford to stay - she was clearly being outnumbered. She could feel the small cuts on her skin and a few drops of blood tint her shirt, again. Well if the Wights did not have blood to bend, she sure did, she supposed. She zigzagged between bushes and trees, legs burning and breathing heavy, hoping to fall back onto the main road. With a bit of luck she wouldn't meet a witchfinder on top of that.

She didn't find it though. Instead, Astrid sank deeper into the forest, which was absolutely not the damn plan, but as she looked around for shelter, a small trail caught her attention. She didn't have a choice, she thought - she would tire before the Wights. She followed the trail, in a hast yet cautious, careful not to step onto any more pile of sticks or branch that could give away her presence. Silence was key. There was a shack at the end of the path - Astrid did not trust the place in any way, but she had no other option. Reluctant, she went for it, all senses alert.

Then, two things happened at once.

First, her magic felt a presence - not another wight, not an animal, but someone's. Their blood flow was so fast that Astrid was pretty sure it was either intense effort or panic.

The second was that she didn't even have time to figure out where they were exactly, a beige figure bolted from the trees, crushing wood under their hooves, followed a few feet away by more Wights. Damn it.

"What are you doing ?" Astrid hissed from her bush. "Hide !"

As they pulled up short to look around them - they were a camelid, Astrid realized - a branch threatened to grab their feet. Astrid's sword cut through the air and choped the wood before it could touch them.

"Go for it, I'll cover you," Astrid added as she called back her sword and placed herself in the midst of the road, waiting for the wights' next move.
