Chapter 1

The forest was heavily shaded, with only a few beams of light shining through the dense covering. Those little patches were enough for the powerful suns of this planet though, making it hot and humid regardless.  The small group of creatures making their way down the beaten path did not seem bothered. They were very large bipedal beings with a thin long tail lifted ever so slightly so that it wouldn’t drag along the ground. At the end was a deadly pointed tip, missing the fine fur on the rest of the body. Instead it was replaced by a almost metal material that glinted off of the sunlight filtering into the forest. These were vorox, a highly intelligent species of the sonazian planet.  Though they were very behind in technology compared to the more dominant species of the planet known as glenns.
They were all a dark shade of tan apart from the one in front. He was a slightly lighter tan with off white legs that faded more and more until at his feet they were a bright pure white.  His eyes were completely blue with a lighter blue oval to represent a pupil.  At the bridge of his nose was a deep cut.  An old wound that showed the inner workings of the vorox through it.  Around his head was a pale pink bandana with burn marks scattered all over it. Despite being the smallest of the group he appeared to be the one in charge of this little brigade.
He stopped suddenly, his large pulled back ears turned a little so that the inside of them could be seen from the side. He listened intently, but all he could hear was the complaining of his packmate who had hit into him when to stopped.
“Snow Shoe! Why’d you stop like that?” He protested. This vorox was a much darker pigment and blended into the landscape much better than Snow Shoe.  He had pure red eyes with a darker circle as a pupil. His tail was swishing back and forth in annoyance.
“Hush Jake,” Snow Shoe said calmly, he did not look back at his old friend as he spoke. “I believe we have company.” The moment he gave his rather calm warning the others stiffened, their tails rising a bit as they expected danger. While Jake took a few steps backward, the third member of the group stormed forward. He was a slightly lighter shade of tan compared to Jake, but had a dark underbelly. He was battle scarred all over, much more than any of the others.
“Malik get back here.” Snow Shoe said, his voice was sharp and slightly annoyed. “We aren’t here for a fight.”
“This is our territory, we must defend it!” Malik said. He paused to look back at Snow Shoe, his red eyes were narrowed and hateful.  Snow Shoe did not respond to the aggressive vorox apart from an exasperated sigh.
“Jenini please look ahead for us.” He asked kindly to the young apprentice.
“Don’t boss him around!” Malik hissed, his tail was lifted up so that it was nearly to his face and his silvery teeth were bared.  Snow Shoe did not look impressed.
“Oh please Malik, get off your high horse, I outrank you. It's my job to ‘boss around’ others, including your apprentice.” Snow Shoe said.  He managed to keep a calm demeanor but it was always difficult with Malik, who always tried to undermine him.

The apprentice in question watched the two bicker in silence. He was definitely the darkest of the bunch, with almost black stripes on his back. His green eyes were wide and uncertain but this was a situation he was often put in. Being given contradicting orders from Malik and Snow Shoe.
“Please look ahead for us Jenini.” Snow Shoe repeated, there was no sharp edge to his tone like when speaking to Malik. “You are the best out of all of us at keeping hidden.” The novice nodded and moved quickly forward, avoiding the consenting glare from his mentor as he did.

There was silence among the vorox once Jenini had left. Malik was fuming but that was typical.  It wasn’t long before the young vorox returned, wide eyed and scared. He moved quickly back to the group, wanting the safety of numbers.

“There are glenn setting up camp up there.” He reported.

“We must-”

“No.” Snow Shoe said, cutting off Malik. He knew exactly what he wanted to do. “We go back and report to Simon. We cannot run blindly into battle.” He said.

“You always do.” Malik grumbled. Snow Shoe actually glared at him, he was clearly not very pleased by that little comment. However he said nothing in return and turned around heading back to their tunnels.

It did not take long to return home, which was concerning that the glenns were so close.  Amongst the thick trees was a battered old house, slowly falling apart as plant life invaded it. Jake stared at the ground intensely, searching for something mixed in with the dirt and broken paneling that made up the floor.  He grabbed hold of a handle there, pulling it up and revealing a hatch to a dark hole. No one seemed fazed by this however, and all four of them went down into the tunnels. It was extremely dark down here, little to no light shined through.  The vorox’s eyes glowed quite brightly in the shadows. Luckily for them they all had extremely good night vision and could see just as clear as they did outside. Snow Shoe left the group, off to his destination.

Simon was the leader of the pack, though with his current health problems Snow Shoe had been taken more and more responsibilities in Simon’s absence.  Undoubtedly Simon would be in his room resting so that’s where Snow Shoe headed. He turned a corner into a smaller room. Everything was lined with thickly packed dirt and stones. The tunnels were slowly built into the ground by the workers of this pack. Simon was sitting on the floor in the back. He looked tired and unimpressed by Snow Shoe’s presence. Each day he looked worse and worse. The strong willed and powerful vorox that had once been was replaced by a weak paranoid one.

“What is it Snow Shoe?” He sighed.

“We have located a small group of glenn setting up camp near the main tunnel entrance.”
