Lore #002 : The Dragons and their Riders 

The bond between the Laeliare’ and their dragons is strong. Legend tales Lanael the Ist was actually bearing blood of one inside his own body, has some parts of it looked like dragon scales and he breathed fire. Then, he found the Dragon we knew as the Devourer, who might’ve been his father. Which leads to theorizing about magic attributes of Dragons. Lanael rode the Devourer and conquered the lands of Yis from Midland’s hands just with one dragon. He then used Dragon's Daedalus as a residence that he claimed would become the nest of the Laeliare’. 

After the conquest of the other seventeen islands that now belonged to the Laeliare’, Lanael bonded with a woman who he considered fortunate to share his dragon blood with. From now on, the tradition of a classic Yissian mariage would be the following : both would cut a fresh wound and then drink the blood and push it into the mouth of the loved one, to give them an ounce of the dragon’s soul. Which led the first Queen, Queen Maedera Ist, to become the second Dragonrider. Not only this, but she would also use of Dragon’s magic and blood magic. However, to protect the gift of the Laeliare', if one came to die, they had to be burnt by a dragon to reduce to shatter the secret of their nature. Most likely from witches and eventual necromancers. 

The dragons can feel the emotions of their riders, but also communicate with them and being called from a far thanks to a telepathic message. Not every Laeliare’ bonds with Dragons, as it is noticeably the case with Mavor, cousin of Princess Maera Ist.

During a discussion with Guts, Princess Maera 1st explained to him how the actives dragons looked like and that they usually take traits upon their future riders. Like Ramel whose scales are purple and black.

“Ramel takes upon me, if you didn’t notice. The black and purple scales, the purple eyes. She’s my twin sister in some sense. I would die for her and, she would for me.”

“As you can see, Farnel looks like… My dad. Black hair and chestnut, warm eyes. She always seems too kind. Calm, and collected. But if one dared to lay hand on me or anybody she loves, she’d burn them without a warning. In some way, she’s been my second mother.

“Moonsinger was my mum’s dragon. Ever since her death, nobody went to claim her. Out of respect I think, but she always protected me. And she’s always so… Shiny. She shines like the sun. Made of gold and amethyst, I feel like my mother’s spirit lives within her. She… appease me.”

“Olron has a smile on his face. A smug. It suits my cousin Galaedar very well, in my opinion. He takes pleasure in hunting sheeps and scaring the residents of Midland by flying there every once in a while. He is one of the biggest we have. He’s fast, bites hard, breath immeasurable fire… Olron is an ace in everything. But you can be sure he is involved in some michief with my cousin. Almost always the case, at least.”

“Gammynn is a small she-dragon, but she’s definitely some sneaky bitch. Already. She’s big enough to be ridden, but we’ll have to wait three more to throw her into battle if necessary. I always found it beautiful, that mix of red and white on her scales. Don’t you think?”

“He seems threatening like that, but he’s actually very social : it’s Aydeor. The white and yellow one. He is fond of people and like snuggles and pets. That’s why he is always near the rivers people are passing, to see them and maybe get some hugs from the kids or else. He doesn’t like to stay alone, he’s better with his fellow or humans. He loves playing with children. He does it a lot with Nael.”

“Botyr looks like she is laughing whenever she growls. She likes music a lot and tends to fly just to listen to the music happening in the Gold district. It’s usual to Dragons, but she seems furthermore protective of her rider. She kind of intimidates me. Botyr is insanely charismatic.”

“Frageoss is majestic. A mix of bronze, yet gold and blue… He is… I have no words. When he gets out of the Dragonspit, it’s like a daydream. He doesn’t like to go out a lot. Instead, he waits for the first rays of sun and first of the moon. And the entire Island keeps on being awake just to see Frageoss fly.”

“Neddren is not purple, she’s actually pink. Very much pink, in fact. She’s probably the only one I saw this pink. The others are… Lighter. She’s light-headed and often bumps into things. She’s also clumsy. But it’s because she likes to nap instead of flying and hunting.”

“Reindoth is… Terrifying. I don’t know. I feel like he’s going to growl at me at any moment. But, honestly, that’s fair enough. He’s ninety years old now. I guess he must think we’re all going too fast for him. And the others aren’t very social with him either.”

“Guvrys is the most feminine she-dragon I’ve seen. She’s such a preppy girl. She likes to be taken care of, and to be admired. She has a lot of confidence and it shows. I know they spoil them a lot. But honestly, it’s deserved."

“Baimmon had anger issues at first. We had to reeducate him a lot. I think he just has bad memories with riders in general… Now he’s a lonely, but non-aggressive one, and he listens to you but does not speak. If he does, it’s because he has something to say. A shame to treat a dragon like that. ”

“Ryghalun looks like an angel when he’s flying. He is social and polite. He often offers flowers to Ramel. I think he likes her.”

“And… You have the Black Typhon, the Devourer. He ate Dragons, and was the one of the very first Laeliare. He is still alive and lives on one of the smallest Islands. Sometimes, we see him flying around, and we hide our Dragons. Just in case.”
