The Lair is an immense underground city where all kinds of inhuman beings live. It was created by the Lord of the Underrealm and his four children. Before its creation, the inhumans beings used to live at the surface, along with humans. Cohabitation proved to be difficult, an organization called the Dawn Knights was in charge of regulating those relations.

Once the Lair was created, its inhabitants parted in different groups but remained solidary to each other. On the one hand there are the Passive, which satisfy themselves with a calm life in the Lair, without going much to the surface. On the other hand there is the Plague, a minority in the Lair but a dangerous one since its members regularly go to the surface to... Well, cause damage to human life in general.

In exchange for this place to thrive, the Lord of the Underrealm demanded a sacrifice every 10 years, this was called the Choosing. At first the Chosen would be chose among all the inhabitants, but when the Plague started to become more prominent, it was decided the Choosing would only apply to the members of the Plague. No one really knows what happens to those who are sent to the Underrealm, sometimes they come back, sometimes not.

Due to the Plague's activities, the Dawn Knights resorted to stronger and more violent solutions in order to keep control on the Plague... This led to very conflictuous relations between the Lair and the Dawn Knights.

The Dawn Knight eventually offered a new option for the inhabitants of the Lair: to become Affranchis. By doing so, the affranchi agrees to live on the surface and gives up on any activities in relation with the Lair. The affranchis are very badly seen by the whole Lair, they're considered to be cowards and for that, they're very few. They have to wear a little red scarf as a sign of recognition.
