In a hospital room, a young boy was slowly, painfully waking up, after days of sleeping.

Granted, it wasn't really sleeping. A few medically induced comas later and painstakingly long surgeries is what took up the majority of these past few days, along with the child's body being too exhausted to want to wake up, anyways.

Finally, though, that was going to change.

A single eye slowly opened, with one ear hearing the sound of shouting from the hallway. It was all muffled to him, as he slowly let out a small groan, and did his best to sit up. It was scarily numb.

The child recoiled, letting himself fall back down onto the bed. What happened? He was so sore, he couldn't really see or hear- where was he? Where was his mom?

The boy tried to fight through his confusion as the voices in the hallway got louder. As he lay down, and took a few deep breaths, he decided to listen.

...

"... I don't care if he's mine, I told you already, I want nothing to do with that- with that thing!"

"He's your SON!! Do you hear yourself?! He's still your legal responsibility- If you want to get the scar tissue removed you have to wait! We just finished his eye and eardrum-"

"I don't want any of that, the responsibility isn't mine! Sofia has parents to care for him- I've taken this to court! I don't want him!"

The child didn't recognize either of the voices, or what they were talking about. He blocked out the shouting, as he closed his eye- where was he, no, who was he..?

Well, who he was is the easy question. Nickolas Perez Marquez, of course- his mother, Sofia Ana Marquez. She was a genetic engineer, one of the first to legally and safely remove genes in humans causing cancer and other pre-dispositional diseases. She hadn't wanted a son, but, when she was pregnant, she couldn't bear to get rid of the child. And so, Nick was born.

His life was pleasant up until now. He did exceptionally well in school, and showed promise with coding that surpassed most children double his age. A prodigy? No, not really. He saw it as fun, as a hobby. Like a game he could play all by himself.

He had lots of half brothers and sisters who he never met, but heard lots about. They were all smart too, he thought. He didn't have friends, other than a girl he lived with named Matilda, and another boy his age named Diontrey. He liked them, but never hung out with them. He liked computers more; that always had worried Sofia. But he was young; he had time to grow out of it.

Sofia and Nick lived in a large laboratory complex, along with other researchers. A huge, government-funded complex, with lots of space to live and work. Or, it was. That led us to the second question; where was Nick?

This wasn't his room, and his mom wasn't here. His bed was huge, but stiff and smelled weird. A television was in front of the bed on a wall, but, next to the wall were chairs, facing the bed. It felt like he was being observed by people who hadn't arrived yet.

Nick opened his eye, sitting up, and looked around some more. Every part of him was numb, but curiosity took ahold of his mind, so he moved. Chords of some kind were plugged into his wrists and hands, as he held them up to his face to take a closer look. A few clips on his fingers, that seemed connected to a monitor, and IV tubing plugged into his wrists. Why..?

He set his hands down on his lap, although he could only feel the weight of his arms in general. He was scared, and confused.

"Mom?" His brain let out the thought, as if he had said it, but somehow something had stopped him. He didn't understand- he should have said it, why weren't words coming out of his mouth?

"Mom?" He tried again, but nothing. A croak of a noise escaped, but, he couldn't feel his mouth at all. Nick reached up to touch his face, to feel what was wrong, and felt a tube connected to his jaw instead.

This was frustrating, he didn't get it. Why? Where was he? Where was his mom, or anybody, and what was happening to him?

His chest started heaving up and down, and his breaths grew shorter and tears stung at his eye before pouring down his cheek. Without even realizing it, his soft cries turned into violent sobs, as noises escaped from his throat that he didn't mean to make. These croaks eventually got loud enough to grab somebody's attention, as the door of the room opened, and a nurse rushed in. The arguing in the hallway must have stopped, but, her voice was recognizable from it.

"Oh, you're awake- poor thing, it's okay, you're okay-" He rushed around him, pulling out a few various tubing and chords from his arms. The tube in his mouth stayed, though.

Nick grabbed at her as she continued, still sobbing- this wasn't helping at all. The woman let the boy do so; and waited for him to let a bit more of his feelings out.

"It's okay, your body just needs some help to work-" As she continued to soothe him, a figure made their way to the door frame, watching in disgust from the hallway. The nurse let go of Nick, glaring at the man as he stared at the child, before going to grab a large teddy bear from outside of the room. The man, unwavering, continued to stare as Nick cried. Now it was softer whimpers, as he looked over to the stranger.

The man stared at him the same way a soldier stares at an enemy's body; abject horror. Nick stared back, as tears streamed down his cheek, in more of confusion and fear. Who was the stranger, why did he look at Nick like he were a monster?

The stranger, disgusted, slowly inched closer towards Nick's bed. The boy watched him as he cried softly, in curiosity and anticipation. The man eventually stood next to the child, staring down at him. There was no sympathy or love in the man's eyes as he glared at the boy, who looked up at the man in curiosity. He had no idea it was his father.

"... Nick," The man finally spat out. The boy nodded; yes, that was his name. Before the man continued, the nurse rushed back in, with a few toys and movies in hand. She gently placed a teddy bear down in Nick's arms.

"Here, you have this- I have movies for you! Which do you want?" She completely ignored the stranger; so these were the two that had been arguing.

Nick's gaze moved from the tall man towards the three dics she held up. A movie about fighting robots, a fast mouse, and finally, a movie about princesses. Nick picked the one about the robots; he loved that movie. As the nurse went to put the DVD in the television, the stranger sighed.

"This isn't worth my time, goodbye." The nurse looked at him from the TV.

"I'll call the cops and have you arrested, Arche!" The man crossed his arms and chuckled.

"You can hear from my lawyers, then," He snapped before walking out. The woman finished setting up the television, fuming.

"He's... I can't." She shook her head, and looked back at Nick, who was confused. She gently rested her hand on his shoulder.

"You can watch this for now; you have friends wanting to see you, is it okay if I get them?" The boy's eye lit up. His mom!! Finally! He nodded with excitement.
