Chapter 3

"The syringe.. T-That was the last of it? " Jason paused briefly, then raised his voice. "Jack, why would you use all of the vaccine on Devin?! You could have taken some for yourself, you could have split it!" He held up his hands as he tried to question Jack's actions. Among strained breaths, Jack replied, "I couldn't. If Devin had gotten any less than 70 mL of the vaccine, he wouldn't have survived. The same thing would have to happen with me." Jason was at a loss for words. He gripped his hair with his hands in frustration. "No... No!" He approached his dying friend. "Jack! Jack, you can't do this! You can't die on me! Not now!" He held his hand tightly, hoping for a squeeze back, but Jack's palm, fingers, almost his whole body was limp. "Jason... Im sorry." He said in-between choking for air. The heart monitor beeped furiously. He dropped Jack's hand to his side and gripped his arm, leaning over him. "No! Don't say that, you're gonna live! I can fix you!" He gripped Jack's arm tighter. "God, Jack, don't do this to me! Come on!" He cried, trying to shake the arm he was holding. Warm tears flowed from his eyes like a river. As the heart monitor slowed drastically, the stress in Jack's body faded. As did the life. Jason lifted his limp upper body, trying to get any air into him. Then he tried CPR and mouth-to-mouth. His whimpers and cries were unintelligible at this point. All that could come out of his mouth was "No," as he tried his best to deny that his best friend was leaving him. There was a mess of coughed-up blood everywhere. Jason didn't hesitate to get it on his own hands to help Jack. As Jason began to lose hope, he heard the flatline. He froze, watching Jack's closed eyes. His body began to shiver as he slowly set Jack's body back down onto the bed. He slid his hands out from under his back and roughly exhaled, as if he were releasing all the tension from the situation. He took a step back, looking Jack's lifeless body up and down. Then he backed himself into a corner, weeping. He sank down to the floor and covered his face with his arms and knees, as the flatline became the ambiance of the room. His cries echoed through the small room. Losing his childhood friend, he felt as if he had no one else... Then he came to his senses. He picked his head up and thought briefly. "Wait.. I've still got Devin!! I can't let him go, then Jack will have died for nothing! I've gotta check on him!" He sprang up and ran to Devin's room.

As he rounded the corner of the doorway, he was relieved to hear a calm heart monitor. Then as he entered the room, his body flooded with relief. Devin was awake, sitting up in his bed, observing his surroundings. "Devin? Devin are you alright?" Jason asked as he hastily approached the bed. Devin looked over to him. "Jason? What happened? Is everyone alright?" He stopped beside the bed and gripped the bar. "Nevermind that, how are you feeling,?" Jason asked after anxiously looking everything over, . "Uh... I'm good." Jason sighed in relief and pulled up a chair to rest his legs. After he confirmed his condition, they felt 100 pounds lighter. Devin picked up his wrists and scoped all the different things he was attached to. Jason was recollecting himself, slouched in the chair next to the bed. Once he filled Devin in on the full story, they both felt that they were strong enough to walk. "Hey, I heard Jack's voice when I was out.. Where is he?" Jason turned. "Yeah... he's the one who gave me the vaccine." Devin's ears slightly lowered. "...is he alive?" Jason stood up and turned. He made his way to the doorway and let out a deep breath. "I tried to treat him, but... he lost too much blood, and he just ...faded away in my arms."

The way Devin learned what the personnel would do with the people was he went into his feral form and disguised himself among the rest of the creatures. He listened in on a conversation between two upper persons while listening through a thick plate of glass, where the other creatures scratched and clawed to get in. Then when they both left the room, he sneaked into the door behind two officers entering the facility, and crawled up through a vent, just beyond the sights of the cameras. His dark fur served as a shadow behind the officers.
