The Forest.
Birdstone Valley
Used to be a town a thousand year ago, until a small meteor struck and buried itself deep in the ground. Over many, many years, as the ground slowly grew back over the crater, the meteor stayed buried underneath, holding a cave of magic alien crystals inside. It began to affect the creatures in the forest, and now a bunch of wolves run around fighting each other. How did we get here?

An old series I made when I was 8! My best friend, Becca, made some wolves with elemental powers, and I went ham and made like 50 other unrelated ones. Some of her wolves will be used in this story, all with her permission. She is Bectato on Instagram! All of the characters are redesigned, but certain elements like the human hair and colorful fur and powers stay for the most part. It's mostly sparkledogs vibing in the woods, and that's what it has been for most of its history.

Important historical events.

  • Meteor Strike

The very thing that brought the magic to this forest. There is a tunnel down to it, but it is great misfortune to end up down there, as it often can be painful and can change you if you spend too much time in it. It is very, very long, and full of sharp crystals and nasty bugs, and the light is dull. However, to sit at the edge is to be good fortune, and the packs rumor that you can hear the voices of your ancestors echo through it.

  • Animals Gain Magic

Over time, the animals slowly became more magical as the meteor's magic settled into the environment around it. The plants began to slowly develop different magical properties as well, and is why herb wolves came into practice, as certain wolves dedicated themselves to learning the magic of each plant.

  • Wolves Arrive

After getting pushed out of their homes due to hunting and deforestation, a group of wolve smake a long journey to a new home. Little do they know, it's nothing like they had experienced before. Over time they acclimate to the environment, and their cubs inherit the powers the meteor has brought.

  • The Betrayal

After a while, some wolves wanted to see if they could have more, if they could take a crystal for themselves and hold all of the power in the valley. In the process, they discovered how unfriendly and unforgiving the tunnels were. Upset by their actions, the leader told them to leave their pack, and the Betrayers and Defenders were split into their groups.

Traditions.

Herb Bottles. Most herb wolves have vines, leaves or grass tied up around their neck with a bottle of an herb of some kind inside, often their favorite or the one they use the most to signify their pride in their role. They sometimes inherit the bottle from their parents, sometimes they get their own beforehand. They can be an herb wolf without one, although it is a bit uncommon.

Cave Visits. As every cub grows up into a pack role, an adult (normally the leader or aide, but there are exceptions if they are unavailable) brings them down to the cave behind the falls that leads down to the meteor. They have the cubs stand near the edge. In the defenders, they tell the story of the powers and the betrayal, and warn the cub of its strength and danger. In the betrayers, although this tradition changes over time, they tell the story of their hunt for power and early leaders would send cubs down to also be corrupted by the magic.

Roles.

Leader. There's only one leader at a time, and they're elected by the pack. Their main role is to mediate issues inside the pack and come to a final decision on big matters. They are less one who solely leads the group, but more one respected animal people go to with larger problems to work them out with the pack.

Herb Wolf. Herb wolves often aren't actually part of either pack, but align with one more than the other on occasion. Although not strictly, it's often passed down through families, just by the fact that the cubs are generally exposed to it through their parents, and live with them outside of the packs if that's how they choose to live. They know about the plants of the valley, and are often designated as healers, although they'll occasionally teach a few actual pack members healing knowledge to keep them safe if they leave.

Translator. Translators often speak other animal languages other than theirs, and is once again something that can often be passed down through family, although not exclusively. They often end up as Aides or leaders, as they can help solve disputes with other creatures of the forest.

Aide. If a pack is too big or duties are too stressful, a Leader will often get an aide, where they elect a close friend or someone trustworthy and willing to help them with their duties. Whether it's a pack decision or personal decision is their choice.

Pack Member. Simply a pack member without a role. Mostly here because some characters have this in their bios as placeholders since they don't have a standout role.

Holiday.

New Moon. Their powers are weakest at the beginning of a new month, for reasons none of them are sure of. Weird space logic. At this time, they work the hardest, as a reminder that without their powers they still have strength and skills.

The Victory Ahead. Every year at the anniversary of the betrayal, each pack celebrates it differently. It's a remembrance of the betrayal, and a reminder that each pack will have their revenge. Like the tradition of cave visits, the way it's celebrated in the betrayer pack changes as the packs reconcile, and it becomes a day of remembering the past.

The First Element. A celebration of Crystal's birthday created after her death by friends in her memory. She was the first wolf to get powers in the valley, and was a very loved and respected leader.

Flora.

Peppers. Peppers native to the valley have extremely flammable and spicy seeds that work great as kindling fuel. The rest of the pepper is delicious and flavorful if you cut out the seeds beforehand.

Fauna.

Rabbits. As mentioned before, they have stronger powers, and are consequentially more aggressive.

Lynxes. They're often further up the mountains and away from the valley, but it's not uncommon for them to have weak powers. Most have ice or wind powers but occasionally others pop up as well. They normally live alone or in small groups of friends or family, and are overall neutral on the wolves, but it varies by the group you come across.

Birds. Loud. Most don't have powers, but they do enjoy flying with wind elementals.

Foxes. Usually lone travelers or family travelers. They often seem interested in checking out or visiting the packs, but not normally in sticking around. Some wander in and out of the territory, so the powers and strengths can vary greatly.

Main Characters.

Leader of the Defenders
A sweet grandma figure, but a not so sweet enemy. She defends her home fiercely, and had to be dragged out of a losing battle literally kicking and screaming. She is admired by most of the Defenders for her strong control of her duality.

Betrayer
One of the Betrayers. Another one of Bectato's characters. She is edgy as fuck and unpredictable.

Defender
Was dragged into trying to take the crystals' powers by his sister Toxic. Later was attacked by her and saved by Dawn, who brought him to the Defenders.

Betrayer
Write a few sentences about the character. What's their deal, basic stuff. Oh also, this is a scrollbox, by the way.

Defender
The first to get full unbridled power of the wolves. She is very wise, and was a mother at a very old age. She loves her packmates deeply and died fighting for them.

Secondary Characters.

Herb wolf
Mean and awkward. She's good at her job though so no one complains.

Defender
The second most sparkledog to ever sparkledog, besides Rebecca. She was my self insert when I was younger. These days she is a character, I guess. She sure does exist. Still, she is dear to me.

Defender
Has very weak powers and was raised by a dad who didn't really know how to be a dad. After feeling excluded with the Betrayers, she left to the Defenders and only comes back to see her partner.
Magic.

The magic comes from the magic of the meteor and the crystals inside of it. The rocks are from an unknown planet, not of this universe, and as a result it has unexpected effects on the creatures of this world. As a result, over time, when the meteor spends almost a thousand years buried in the earth, the magic begins to seep into the land. As it combines with Earth's elements, it results in many variations of powers, which get stronger through the generations. This is a list of all canon powers, what they do, their range in intensity, and any additional notes. Learn more here.

Defenders Camp
It's located a bit higher up on a mountain, high enough to look across the valley.
Betrayers Camp
It's located down in the valley's lowest point, near a marsh.

Birdstone Falls
Be careful swimming, the springs shoot up magic! Don't want to accidentally fall onto a fire spring.
Mossy Grotto
The opening to the only tunnel to the caves, hidden behind the Birdstone Falls. Forest inhabitants often go here to seek advice.
