About Setting

Town of Salem is a discord-based roleplaying game that challenges players on their ability to convincingly lie as well as detect when other players are lying. The game ranges from 7 to 15 players. These players are randomly divided into alignments – Town, Mafia/Coven, and Neutrals.

If you are a Town member you must track down the Mafia and other villains before they kill you. The catch? You don't know who is a Town member and who is a villain. If you are an evil role, such as a Serial Killer, you secretly murder Town members in the veil of night and try to avoid getting caught.

Allignments of Salem

Town

The Townies are the "good" side of Town of Salem. Their aim is to "lynch every criminal and evildoer," referring to the rival factions that may harm the Town.

Compared to the other factions, the Town's primary method of elimination is by lynching their opponents in trials (due to their relative size in membership), keeping the majority of votes and power in numbers, as well as the abundance of intelligence gathering roles. Using the correct information and the Townies' majority, the evildoers will be lynched after voting.

Mafia

The Mafia are a faction of evildoers that serve as the primary enemy of the Town. All members have one common goal: to kill anyone that will not submit to the Mafia. Unlike the Town, the Mafia know who each other are from the beginning of the game.

Unlike the Coven however, the Mafia can pose themselves as another normal Townie much easier. The Mafia focusses of espionage and deception.

Coven

The Coven are a faction also against the Town. Being a diverse set of multiple roles, all members of the Coven specialize in witchcraft in any way possible and have the possibility to kill anyone they desire. Knowing who their teammates are similar to the Mafia, they can single-handedly take out four or more innocent Townies in one Night alone, a devastating blow.

Unlike the Mafia, the Coven focus more directly on killing and prohibiting their targets rather than deception. Only a few roles and the Necronomicon can keep the Coven safe from any Town Investigative or Town Protective roles, or simply being lynched themselves by the more probable Town majority. Thus, the Coven need to kill off targets quickly, but that may create desperation for those who oppose them.

All of this is a major work in progress, sit tight!

General Game Rules

No Claiming OOC. Do not screenshot any proof of your role. This is supposed to be a mystery game! Additionally, you cannot claim your role OOC unless your character mentions it IC first, and even then, you are still not allowed to screenshot any proof of your role no matter what.

We cannot moderate your private conversations, but it is heavily encouraged that you do not claim OOC due to the fact that no matter if it is IC vs OOC knowledge, you still subconsciously are aware which ruins the surprise and mystery aspect of the game. Please keep this in mind when talking in private with fellow players.

A GM can punish any individuals found doing this at their discretion. You’ve been warned.

Organized Wills. You must have your will separated into two parts. One will must include your night results (if you have them) in an organized manner, while the other can be completely up to you for roleplay purposes.

You cannot update your results will until the Dawn of the next day. You may include who you chose for your target, but not your results (due to the fact that you may die that night, and will not have enough time to record).

Anonymous Night Roleplays. Night roleplays are intended to remain anonymous. You should be informed by your GM if you may reveal something or not, but ultimately, all night interactions are supposed to be veiled in mystery. The only exceptions to this are those with a ‘free speech’, signaled on their Toyhouse’s rolecard.

No Gamethrowing. Intentionally losing the game or hurting your teams chances of winning (even if that team is just you) is gamethrowing. Gamethrowing, in extended terms, is working against your own team in such a manner that you value yourself (or your role) more than the rest of the team and are acting in such a way that has a high likelihood of not working in your team's best interest. For example, A Mafia member dies and in his last will he reveals the names of all the living Mafia members. If those names are true then you are gamethrowing, if they are false then you are not.

Activity Requirement. ToS is a social game. For the sake of you and your team players, you will need to be active to push toward your goal. If you do not participate in Nightly/Daily duties, you will be kicked out. GMs also have the right to call out inactivity if they deem it as such.

Roleplay Etiquite

  • OOC and IC Separation. Alearly distinguish between out-of-character (OOC) and in-character (IC) conversations and actions. Use brackets or labels if necessary.
  • Consent is Key. Always obtain consent from other players before involving them in storylines, conflicts, or interactions that might significantly affect their characters.
  • Respect Roleplay Lore. Familiarize yourself with the server's lore and adhere to it. Consistency is key to a believable world.
  • Patience, Young Grasshopper. Roleplay can be slow-paced at times. Be patient and allow others to respond to your actions and messages. If you have to leave communicate it with the player or if you want to see if they are still there maybe reach out.
