Player Basics

Getting Started!

Getting Started
Typically when you enter a Town of Salem game, you will be given a template and submission channel. This channel prevents viewing message history to prevent players from knowing the possible role of the other players around them. Different GMs will have different levels of detail for their character submissions, but the base concept is rather straight forward. A role list should be provided along with guidelines on what roles are accepted and not. Choose three that match your character, and submit them with that in mind. Your role will dictate what you can do in the day/night. Every role is unique and has a part in the overall game. Giving the roles in your submission increase your chances, however, it is not guaranteed that you will get that role.

Your House
After your role has been given you will notice that you have a number and a 'house'. Once the game starts, this is where you will be given all of your information by the GM, and where you may store notes. This will include your role, your actions, the time, and your will. Your will is where you will leave information for the town in the event that you die. You can put whatever you want in this will, including roleplay fluff, but it is generally recommended that you keep track of your findings throughout the game, this way the information will not be lost later down the line. You can write your will simply by placing it into your 'house' chat.

Dawn

(This rule is sometimes removed in 'quick' games). Dawn (and Dusk) do not have any trials or any role actions, and are simply timeframes for characters to roleplay and explore the world. This rule is commonly paired with the NPCs module to allow characters to create stories and get more attached to one another. Please note that NO ROLE should be able to perform their day or night actions during this time. This is for roleplay only.

Daytime

Day Start
The first day is always an introduction day where the town may get to know one another and make connections (seeing as this is a roleplay event, and not the quick-time game it's based on). Every game lasts several in-game Days which have several phases. During the 2nd Day and onward, you can chat with the other players, vote for a player to be lynched, or even use your Day Ability if you have one.

Discussion Phase
This stage starts on the second day. During this phase your characters may discuss the events that happened at night.

Voting Phase
During this phase, players can vote for others to put on trial. The number of votes required to put someone on trial depends on the amount of players that are alive. Players can be put on trial 3 times in a Day. After the third trial, the Day phase immediately ends, regardless of how much time is left. If a player isn't sent to trial, the Day phase ends, and the game will transition into the Night phase.

Defense Phase
The town will only go through this phase if a player is voted up to trial during the Voting phase. During this phase, the player in question gives a defense. Only this player can speak (with the exception that the town can whisper to each other). Blackmailed players may only say "I am blackmailed." once as their defense. Silenced players may only say "..." once as their defense.

Judgement Phase
The town will only go through this phase if a player is voted up on trial during the Voting phase. During this phase, all players (besides the player voted up on trial) vote on whether or not the player is Guilty or Innocent. However, players don't have to vote, and in that case, can abstain from voting. Players must take notice that a Jester can haunt any player of that group who did not vote innocent.

Last Words
During this phase, the player in question can deliver a final statement to the town before being killed. Only this player can speak.

After the player is lynched their Last Will and role is shown, and other players may speak again. The Day phase then ends, and the game transitions into the Night phase.

Dusk

This is a role-play only portion of the game. However, evil teams may start discussing in private at this time.

Night

During this phase, players who have a night ability are given an opportunity to use it, excluding roles who have passive night abilities (such as the Medium). Mediums may speak with anyone in the graveyard or 1 alive player (if using seance), and the Jailor may speak with their prisoner.

Depending on your GM and role, you may have opportunities to roleplay with whoever it is you interact with. However, both parties must agree to do the roleplay, otherwise it is called off. These roleplays will take place in a private thread in the town square channel.

Misc.

Whispers
You can whisper to other players during the day during town meetings. Watch it though, spies and certain other roles can listen in on your conversations.

Your Last Will
While in the roleplay sense, a will is quite literally your character’s final words, in the original game wills are used as a way to confirm your role. A part of your will must consist of an easily displayed record of what you’ve done every night and results (if any). When put on trial, you can show this part of the will and it solidifies your credibility. Note that evil roles can create fake wills, and you should check if wills line up with what we know happened during the night.

In Town of Salem, players use the acronym of N# for every night. So a will would look something like this;

Peepaw the Doctor

N1 - 12. Name
N2 - 4. Name (was attacked)
N3 - self heal
N4 -
N5 -
N6 -
etc etc etc
