Ranks

King / Queen: The ruler of the pride. They are called King if they are male and Queen if they are female. They have passed the trial of the forest, which shows that they are suitable to lead the pride. If someone else passes the trial while they are leading, they must fight to the death to keep their stance, or at least fight till one surrenders and consents to be banished. They make all of the decisions and are highly respected among the clan, carrying the most authority. They also are in charge of giving lions their names with their parents' input when they are old enough to become a Learner, and assigning them to their ranks.

Consort: The mate of the King / Queen. While they do have some authority in giving orders, they only have it when their mate is alive, and must defer to the King / Queen. If their mate dies, they lose their status as Consort and return to whatever rank they once held, unless it has been filled; in that case, they may either retire as an Elder or become a Soldier / Hunter. The only way a Consort can hold power is if there is no one currently available to take over the leadership position. In this case, the Consort will assume control till one can be found, or till an Heir is old enough to rule.

Heirs: The cubs of the King / Queen and the Consort. They are trained to be able to assume the role of Soldiers and Hunters if they are not chosen as the next in line to rule the pride, but may be chosen to the rule the pride if something were to occur to their sibling (especially if their sibling dies as a King / Queen with no Heirs). It is very rare for an Heir to be allowed to train to be anything besides a Soldier or Hunter.

Oracle: The communicator with the ancestors. They must remain celibate to maintain their connection; if they take on a mate, they are to be cast out. They receive signs and prophecies from the ancestors, advising the pride on what is and isn't to be done. They normally remain to themselves so as to always be ready for a message from the ancestors, and though they are widely respected, most of the pride will try to avoid them out of a sort of awe and fear. They may help advise the King / Queen on what role a lion should take in the pride, and are meant to determine what Learner will be their successor in the King's / Queen's stead.

Assassin: The right paw of the King / Queen. They essentially answer only to the current ruler, with a few exceptions, though most act just like any other pride member. The Assassin isn't actually known among the pride to be the Assassin; part of the point is that the pride is unaware of who they are. Only the King / Queen, Consort, Oracle, and Learning Oracle know who it is. They carry out justice against those who have broken the pride's code, so long as they are told to. They will assume the role of Soldier or Hunter in public and with those who do not know who they are. If an Heir takes the throne, they will be charged with training up a new Assassin as a Learning Assassin, and once they are ready the Assassin will retire to a normal role. The Heir can, however, choose to keep the current Assassin. Generally, if there is a coup, rebellion, or something similar, the Assassin will generally be eliminated or banished alongside the King / Queen.

Healers: The herbalists of the pride. There will only ever be two, with up to two Learning Healers between them. They are not required to be celibate, however, it is generally frowned upon by the pride as a whole. They study herbs and create medicine to heal the pride, and are not expected to fight or hunt. Instead, they care for the sick and wounded, and also help lionesses during birthing and the initial stages of mothering. They may receive messages in the Oracle's stead if there is not one at the time, but they will not be able to interpret them as reliably. Generally, a Healer will only receive a message to inform them who should take on the role of Oracle if there is no Learning Oracle to replace them, if they do not go to the next Oracle themselves. In fact, most healers are taught to have no belief in the ancestors, believing it is nature that ultimately shapes things and determines what is going to occur. They believe the course will go as it sees fit, and that the ancestors have no hold over things, however this is generally kept quiet except for among the Healers. This is another reason the Oracle exists, as they are supposed to staunchly believe in the ancestors and keep one paw in their realm, and the Oracle generally does not get along with the Healers, at times going so far as to refuse treatment from them depending on how devoted the Oracle is to their position.

Soldiers: These are the lions that, while trained to hunt and capable of doing so, are primarily focused on patrolling and defending (or attacking, if the need arises).

Hunters: These are the lions that, while capable of fighting for the pride if necessary, are primarily trained in and focused on hunting prey for the pride.

Learning Oracle: There will only ever be one at a time, and they will generally not take on the mantle of Oracle till the current Oracle passes away.

Learning Assassin: There will only ever be one, and they take on the mantle of Assassin from the Assassin as soon as the Assassin deems them fit to. The pride does not know who the Learning Assassin is, as they are sworn to secrecy and will be trained to seem like a normal Soldier or Hunter; if the Learning Assassin speaks of their role, they will be stripped of their title and potentially placed in the role of Witness, or even be exiled from the pride. Unlike other Learners, the Learning Assassin does not necessarily have to be a young cub, though it generally is. However, who the Learning Assassin is is the choice of the current King / Queen, whether it be because a new King / Queen has taken rule and so wishes to choose their own Assassin or because the previous Assassin has passed on.

Learning Healers: There will only ever be two, and they will not take on the mantle of Healer till one of the current Healers passes away. if there are two Learning Healers at the time, the older Learner will take on the role of Healer. It is very rare for the younger Learner to be granted the role instead.

Learning Soldiers: Lions training to become Soldiers.

Learning Hunters: Lions training to become Hunters.

Cubs: Cubs born to a lioness in the Isle of Roses who is not the Queen or the Consort and who have not become a Learner yet.

Elders: The retired pride members who are too old or injured to carry on in their duties, but have served for long enough to be treated with respect.

Witness: The lowest rank in the pride. The Witness is generally the cub of someone cast out of the clan, or someone else deserving of a rank beneath the rest of the pride. They eat last, must sleep by themselves, and are widely regarded as too lowly to even speak to due to the crimes they or their family has paid. Their job is to journey into the woods with an Heir or challenger to see whether or not they are fit to be leader, but are not to be considered as a potential leader, as it is believed that the rules of the wood do not apply to them due to their ranking. They, the King / Queen, and a Soldier or Hunter will accompany any lion who is to be exiled to the borders of clan territory as well. Typically there is only one, but on some occasion there may be multiple.
