Physical Appearance

  • Medium length red-orange hair, somewhat floofy and difficult to tame
  • Sky blue eyes
  • Fair skinned
  • Medium in height
  • Relatively fit physical build from exploring outdoors so often, although he's not particularly strong
  • Has the mark of Lord Dalia magically imprinted on the back of his left hand

Clothing Style

Adrian tends to dress rather simply and doesn't care much for wearing things that bring attention to him. He prefers cooler or neutral colors, and he prefers long sleeved tops, especially if he can easily cover his hands with them. He's often seen wearing sweaters when the weather is cooler, and he typically only wears shorter sleeves if it's too warm. Adrian is a little self-conscious about his body and doesn't like having more skin than necessary shown, so it's very unlikely to see him showing off his arms or legs unless it's too hot to not do so. He tends to wear jeans most often since he likes to explore outdoors and they provide him easy mobility and protection without having to worry about wear and tear much. His foorwear usually consists of running shoes or light-weight boots for hiking.

His most common look includes a long sleeved light blue shirt with white edges on the sleeves and bottom, although the end of the left sleeve gets torn off at some point. Mysty later on gives him a green hooded cloak with dark goldenrod trim along a small gold clasp to protect him from elements and spirits. The bottom of the cloak is split into three points.

Personality

Even before becoming mute, Adrian was always a boy of few words and tended to express himself through his body language and actions or just simply reserve his sentiments for the people that mattered most to him. He has a curious mind and can come off as seemingly fearless since he is willing to take risks or do things on his own to sate his desire to discover and explore. As the youngest in his family, his parents and siblings were always particularly doting toward him, but he doesn't really like being babied or coddled by them, although he doesn't reproach them for inevitably worrying about him. He appears rather docile and is mostly unassuming in most interactions, but he can be very assertive and has a firm confidence in himself. Despite having to voice his thoughts/opinions indirectly now, he will rarely let himself go "unheard" and doesn't let others walk over him.

That being said, Adrian has a kind and compassionate heart and is willing to go out of his way to help even strangers. He dislikes injustice, prejudices, and judgmental people, and he really doesn't like people with disregard to life, whether it be human, animal, or nature. He seems to have an affinity for animals, especially birds, and he always takes care not to disturb the natural state of things when he explores outdoors. Adrian typically has a very serene presence to him and is easy to approach, and he can rather quickly become relatively intimate with the people he grows to trust. Some may notice that he tends to get rather close to those he's directly addressing if the situation is comfortable enough, and this is because he feels much more at ease being near others or having some kind of simple contact with them. This is closely linked with his habit of being very hands-on with whatever tasks he has, whether it be getting his hands dirty to accomplish something or getting in touch with nature around him. He is perfectly fine with having alone time and keeping himself company with his own thoughts, but he tends to get uncomfortable if he has company with him but is not in close proximity to them. He prefers to either be completely alone or close to whoever is with him.

Backstory

Adrian was born the youngest of triplets, and his parents always tended to dote on him, especially with how adventurous he grew to be. He always wanted to be outdoors and exploring the world, far more fascinated with the country they visited during the summer than with the city they lived in. Adrian bonded particularly with his mother since they shared the same vast curiosity, love for nature, and open-mindedness about the spiritual world, which his father and brothers were more skeptical about. Adrian was crushed when his mother disappeared before he turned ten, and after months of searching her case went cold and she was presumed dead. Adrian hardly spoke to anyone afterward and found more comfort in the outside world where he and his mother felt most at ease. Although his father and brothers grew more protective of him in his closed off state, they were more delicate about talking out the spiritual world with him, since he seemed to find some peace when he felt he could sense her presence around them. His brother, Caleb, became the most receptive and open to Adrian during this time, and the two grew very close compared to Adrian's relationship with his father and Austin.

However, when the triplets were 16, Adrian became aware that their father knew more about their mother's disappearance than he was letting on. After finding some memos that he apparently knew where she last was and noticing he would frequently travel there, Adrian set out and followed him one evening against his brothers' wishes, although they ended up going along out of concern and curiosity. They found a strange ruin deep in the forest that Adrian and their mother would frequent, and they discovered their father communing with spirits there. Upon detecting the triplets' presence, the spirits seemed very interested in them, to their father's dismay. Before the boys could discover what was going on, the spirits attempted to draw them further into the temple, and when their father intervened they became enraged. They cast a curse over all of them, yet their father took the brunt of the spell. When Adrian awoke he found himself unable to speak, their father dead, the spirits gone, Caleb blinded, and Austin deafened by the curse.

It's been two years since that day that's been burned into their memories. The three have uneasily adjusted to living with missing senses, although the strain of losing their father and fending for themselves has increased tension in the household. Adrian and Caleb have had to formulate their own way of communicating with each other since Adrian can't speak and Caleb can't read his body language anymore. Since the technological advancements of their home city were sub-par, they've resorted to touch based hand gestures to convey things to each other. All three have learned sign language, with much of it being their own improvisation, and Adrian often has to get Austin's attention in order for Caleb to properly communicate with him since Austin isn't a very good listener even with his hearing. Caleb and Austin's relationship has become extremely strained, Austin opting to irresponsible activities to cope with his own depression and Caleb's anxiety and stress escalating to the point where his health has started to decline. Since Adrian seems to be fairing the best out of the three, he often spends his time at home trying to mediate between his brothers.

However, Adrian has felt compelled to revisit the forest once again, this time without telling his brothers. He senses the presence of spirits, and he holds hope that he may be able to reverse the curse if he could find a way to communicate with them. He finds himself in over his head when an encounter with a young woman named Mystic Hawk thrusts him closer to the spiritual realm than he would've expected.

Trivia:

  • Adrian and his triplet brothers were inspired by the concept of "See/Hear/Speak No Evil." I'm pretty sure the first time I learned about the concept was from an episode of Jackie Chan Adventures, in which three of the cast were cursed to have one of those three senses taken away from them. I took the curse idea from that and based the triplets on it.
  • Another concept that played into their development, Adrian's specifically, was a particular mental image I got when I would listen to the song "Rumbling of the Earth" from the game, Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. I don't exactly remember why, but the image this song gave me involved dark spirits chasing a boy through ruins while a bird spirit guided him through a labyrinth of walls.
    • This boy's general appearance mostly consisted of somewhat messy hair and a cloak. This inspired Adrian's general appearance, and the bird spirit guiding him played into Mystic Hawk's spirit dancing abilities. I imagine she used her abilities to project her spirit into whatever spirit realm he was trapped in to lead him away from malevolent spirits and to an exit.
  • The setting of Adrian's story used to take place on Earth in its first rendition, with him living normally in the city with his siblings and meeting Mystic Hawk outside the city in the forests. At this point, Mysty was meant to be Native American, which is what she was based on, but obviously back then I had little sense of what Native American really meant since I was so young and the only exposure I had to the culture wasn't exactly a good representation (like... Peter Pan "Indians" or Pocahontas).
    • Mysty was adjusted to only be Native American inspired and not actually Native American, and I moved the setting to a different planet entirely to make sure there would be less of a chance people would mistake her for being one. The "city" setting that Adrian used to be in still carried over, although the planet I moved them to isn't technically supposed to have large cities on it.
    • I figure I'll reason this by saying the city eventually crumbles to time over many millennia, since there are no cities on Lailic in the present day.
  • When the spirits' curse cast over them, Adrian felt a horrible, agonizing pressure in his chest, causing him to scream until his voice choked out as he passed into unconsciousness. When he awoke, he was unable to speak.
    • Excluding his father, who died from the curse, Adrian was the only one of his siblings who suffered actual physical pain from the curse, and since he was the last to lose consciousness, he also suffered the longest out of them.
  • Adrian prefers to have some form of contact with whomever he is directly interacting with, and he doesn't put much effort into bonding with people that have problems with others in their personal space. Typically the contact is simple, such as just sitting next to each other close enough that an arm or leg is barely brushing against each other. He reserves hand contact with people he is especially drawn toward, such as his brothers or Mysty.
  • Adrian is self conscious about having his skin exposed, not necessarily because he is uncomfortable with his body, but more because he feels like he is "exposing himself" to spirits more easily if he's not mostly covered up. He already is of the mindset that physical contact with others is an intimate connection he usually needs when communicating, but he feels like he's opening himself to his environment too much if his arms or legs aren't covered, as though the spirits around him might make contact with him and make a connection without his notice or permission.
    • For this reason he feels very uncomfortable during hot days where wearing long sleeves or pants wouldn't be reasonable. He also doesn't really like going to beaches or pools/being in situations where he would have to wear swimwear. If he absolutely needed to swim, he would be more likely to just swim in his clothing and deal with being soaked.
    • He is also not an exceptionally strong swimmer, but he can at least tread water if needed.
    • Adrian tends to take very quick showers, usually cold ones, since he doesn't feel "safe" taking too much time with them. He feels more comfortable taking warm baths for longer periods of time, but he doesn't take them unless he feels like he is stressed and needs to unwind. Otherwise he never does any deep thinking in the shower and would rather sort out his thoughts while buried under his blankets in bed.
  • He is very much a morning person and prefers to get up very early and turn in relatively early at night too. He's capable of staying up if he needs to, but he tends to be groggy and unhappy if he doesn't get to bed on time or doesn't wake up early enough.
  • He doesn't know how to manage his hair and typically doesn't do anything to style it. It's a bit difficult to tame and he typically doesn't bother with it aside from a quick brush-through each morning, if he remembers, that is.
    • He sometimes sits down with Caleb and lets him try and "sort his hair out." It never really has much affect, but Adrian acknowledges the act can help relieve stress for his brother and allows them more time for bonding.
    • It's also a reoccurring thing that Caleb can very easily identify Adrian by his floofy hair if he's feeling around for him when Adrian can't respond for any reason or doesn't hear him right away.
  • Adrian tends to click his tongue if he wants to make Caleb aware that he is present or help him locate him in a room. He has several sounds he makes with his mouth to communicate certain things to Caleb more easily since he cannot speak to him and Caleb cannot see his body language.
    • For more in depth conversations, Caleb will usually speak normally and Adrian will either touch his palms in a certain way or guide his hands into hand-signs for more complicated phrases. It is very common to see the two holding hands, either one casually or both when directly "speaking" to each other.
  • He and Austin communicate usually through a combination of Austin speaking normally and Adrian signing or mouthing words for Austin to read. Austin will sometimes sign as well if it is more convenient to the situation, but he usually just speaks normally since he's not quite as fast or fluent in signing as Adrian is, although he can read it more quickly.
    • Adrian often throws things at Austin to get his attention when they're in the house, usually pillows or socks or something else that wouldn't cause much damage. In public, Adrian typically touches or grabs his arm or hand in some way to get his attention if needed.
  • Although he is the youngest triplet, Adrian is the middle in terms of height. He and Austin usually look about the same height since Adrian's hair is a bit floofy and adds a little height to him, but Austin is actually about a half inch or so taller. Caleb is a tiny bit shorter than both of them, likely due to his poor health.
