Rhine's Links
In Curtis, Rhine sees opportunity. He is young and impressionable, in awe of Rhine's charisma. It is Rhine's sole objective to maintain a favorable relationship with Curtis. If he cannot do so, then let Curtis at least think him a powerful ally, and an even more powerful enemy.
Curtis trusts Rhine. He is much a mystery to Curtis, but he prefers to keep him close. Curtis believes Rhine is a genius. The two get along like brothers, and Rhine helps to fill the hole left behind by Avery. Like many others, Curtis is attracted to the idea of Rhine, and hopes the chameleon can teach him the ways of enigma.
Rhine is fascinated by Elliot above all. He is the greatest wild card in the story. Rhine loves Elliot, and seeks to give him whatever he desires.
Rhine has appeared to him in his weakest moments, giving him purpose when he could not conceive any good end. Elliot is extremely inspired by him.
At first, as is popular narrative, Rhine thinks Avery is a pathetic pushover. Though, as the two become more familiar, Rhine recognizes Avery as one of the strongest characters in the story. He has profound respect for the young boy, and sees himself in him at times.
Avery initially warms up to Rhine quickly, though as Avery sees Rhine's influence on his brother, Avery starts to detest him. Avery blames Rhine for the way Curtis is behaving.
Constantin is so smart and so beautiful and I hate him so much.
Constantin suspects Rhine of misleading Curtis' judgment. Although Constantin doesn't know Rhine personally, he would feel better if Curtis wasn't being advised by someone who so evidently distorts and hides their intentions. "It is not a worthy use of his majesty's time to try and solve the mystery of Rhine."
Hates Sebastian the most. To Rhine, he is the personification of all that is wrong with the world.
Sebastian is curious of Rhine’s influence on the king, but by all appearances he is of sound judgment. It is not Sebastian’s place to question who the king takes for counsel.
Rhine thinks Antoine is a good speaker, and surprisingly, a great listener. Rhine doesn’t like Antoine, but he does like his potential utility. There’s nothing wrong with using people who are so accustomed to using others.
Antoine trusts Rhine for one reason or another. Although he doesn't seem the type, he follows Rhine’s lead. The two do bicker frequently about politics, but when it comes to business, they’re on the same page.
Marie is a good person. Rhine sees how agreeable, how genuinely kind hearted she is. He believes she would do very well in his employ. But for some reason, which none can particularly discern, he respects the distance she demands with all but her word.
When he speaks to her, she feels a chill run down her spine. She cuffs her hand around her bracelet, and will not look directly upon him. His eyes seem almost predatory, as if he gazes about her, scanning for weaknesses. No, not sentimentality or familiarity, but a base, instinctual fear. Her intuition demands she stay far from Rhine.
