- Essa is a mercenary and member of The Blue Shields. She is a talented apothecary and sharpshooter. Unbeknownst to her comrades, she is a noble who ran away from home at a young age, joining the company to learn more about the world outside of her castle.
- Her true name is Elodie Duval, and she is the missing daughter of Fernand Duval, the Marquess of Deauvin.
Born from an extramarital affair, Essa's mother died shortly after her birth. Essa still grew up in the Duval castle, but she was never treated as a true member of the family. She tried to impress her parents by pushing herself in her studies, including marksmanship and chemistry, but to no avail. To her stepmother, she was an embarrassment. To her father, a point of shame.
Unlike Essa's parents, her older half-sister Lauren and her retainer Edlyn gave their time and attention to the young girl. Essa's happiest childhood memories include the sisters sneaking out and exploring the surrounding city and Lauren teaching her to play the lute.
When Lauren and Edlyn were knighted and entered service, Essa was left completely alone in the castle, with no friends or allies. Deciding enough was enough, Essa ran away from home, taking only a few personal belongings and her training rifle. She changed her name and traveled from town to town posing as a traveling apothecary.
Essa was traveling along a forest road when she came across two mercenaries ambushed by bandits. Essa aided in repelling their attackers, and was introduced to Rhae and Cynthia of The Blue Shields. Rhae was badly wounded during the skirmish but Essa stabilized her wound, saving the mercenary's life. Impressed with her marksmanship and medicinal skills, Rhae offered her a spot in their company. Essa accepted and became the group's resident healer.

- Described by her comrades, Essa is humble and devoted to her friends. Essa thrives when she is with other people, and would do anything for those she cares about.
Studious and naturally curious, Essa wants to learn more about the world around her, whether by reading about subjects she doesn't know about or talking to people and understanding their experiences.
That being said, Essa hates being left alone and ignored. Essa doesn't want a spotlight on her 24/7, but she wants to be acknowledged as part of the team.
She spent too much of her childhood isolated from others.
In her spare time, Essa enjoys reading, playing the lute, and sketching the environment. Whenever the Blue Shields are in town, Essa can be found sitting in the local inn, listening to bustle of life and music around her.

Essa holds no ill will towards her older sister, knowing Lauren was disgusted by her ill treatment. Even though she has resolved never to return to Castle Allard, she regrets not saying giving Lauren and Edlyn a proper goodbye.
