The modern version of one of my original characters.

Biography

Thea was born as the first child of an ordinary working-class family. Her parents emigrated from Mozambique to the UK during the 80s. They are affectionate and hard-working people, who are proud of their (foreign) roots.

Growing up under the influences of two vastly different cultures, Thea had to learn early on what it meant to be independent. With her three younger siblings - two sisters and one brother - and both of her parents working several jobs to support the family, Thea often had to take care of her siblings. However, due to her tight-knitted family structures, Thea didn’t mind and enjoyed her role as caretaker.

From childhood on, education has always played an important role in Thea’s life. Having been taught that knowledge is the key to a successful life, she loved school and was the first one in her family to go to uni after graduating high school - making her parents utterly proud. Since money is tight, Thea is still living at her parent’s home. Even though she has a part-time job working in retail to pay for her study expenses, she continues to play her part in the family and takes care of her siblings.

Relationships

Lynn Mary Evans

Lynn is Thea’s best friend. They met on their orientation day at uni. Thea immediately saw how anxious Lynn was and - being nearly ten years older - Thea took Lynn under her wing. Since then the two remained inseparable. Their friendship is an honest and open one, based on mutual trust and the willingness to overlook each other’s faults.

Jonathan “John” Logan

John is a good friend of Thea. They met through Lynn and Fennas dating and it instantly clicked between them, when they first met. Due to them both having immigrant parents, and growing up torn between two cultures, the two have developed a strong friendship.

Fennas Dunne

Fennas is a good friend of Thea. They met at uni through Lynn. At first, Thea was sceptical of Fennas because of his brisk and reserved attitude. However, with her outgoing and stormy personality, it didn’t take her long to see through his mask - hard shell, softcore. Since they both had to grow up fast and take on responsibility from an early age, they had no problem understanding each other and bonded well. Nonetheless, Thea has a way of irritating Fennas and she enjoys chaffing him. The two often provoke each other - with Thea usually having the last word in their friendly teasing.

Miles Saunders

With Miles being one of Lynn’s many flings, he and Thea met briefly. She despises him deeply. Knowing of his manipulative nature and the way he treats Lynn, Thea can’t understand why on earth her best friend would ever think of dating such a guy.

Helena “Hel” Evans

Helena is Thea’s goddaughter. With Lynn being a young single mother and an only child, Thea was often asked for help. She gladly supported Lynn in raising Helena - either by babysitting the child or by giving her mother (pedagogic) advice (based on her personal experiences raising her siblings). Thea adores Hel and tries her best to be a confidant to her. With her warm-hearted but commanding demeanour, she supports Hel’s interests but also teaches her that every action has consequences and to take on responsibility.

Headcanons

FYI: I edited some grammar and spelling for readability.

Approved:

Thea is a family person through and through. Hence, she can’t understand why Fennas broke off nearly all contact with his family. She understands, that he is hurt, but in her eyes, forgiving one's blood relatives is important. So whenever the topic comes up, they start arguing.

Thea and John regularly cook together. John wants to learn more about Thea’s culture (cooking- / foodwise), and Thea is more than happy to share her knowledge with him. In return, he shares his traditional / family recipes with her.

She calls John by his Chinese name because in her eyes moving to another country doesn't mean that one has to leave their (cultural) traditions behind.

Gallery disclaimer

FYI: The images are sorted into four categories (definitions below). The sorting does not represent how I feel about the drawings. It is solely for reference purposes and to make it easier for me to introduce my OC true to character.

1) Basic references: Important (design) information, use these as your reference base.

2) Close to character: Illustrations that are true to the character because they depict their looks well and/or how they (inter)act (with others). You can use these for references.

3) Misc.: A collection of miscellaneous pieces. They are nice to have but you shouldn't use them as references.

4) Memes and Co.: The title says it all, look at them and laugh but do not reference them.
