"I can't just sit around feelin' sorry for myself. I've gotta get up and do something. Do so many things at once I forget about what I'm thinking about in the first place."

Somehow not dead, Adem Yavuz keeps his life as interesting as he can. Whether it be by nearly killing himself doing a motorcycle trick, or trying to fit six hot dogs in his mouth at once, expect him to have done it at least once, or maybe twice. He is certainly stupid enough to do anything again.

Being a product of the Great Depression and a country at war with the world, when he had finally escaped into his adulthood he was thrust into a period of mass conformity. Adem found himself lost. What was he to do with himself at the end of all of his trivial adventures? Would he ever find a true purpose? Will life continue to be ever-confusing, mind-boggling and difficult to cope with?

Adem is a tumultuous and unstable character, being everything and nothing at once, and trying to experience the world, all of it, but finding himself coming short in his ability to do so, and his uncertainty with himself and who he was, what he even wanted to do. There are times where he knows his passions and what he wants, and then other times where he finds himself aimless. Adem is Adem, quintessentially human, a character that is the exploration of the human condition, its limits, and its complexities.

a perfect example of his motivation as a character could be seen here in this wonderful James Dean quote.

Personality
  • eccentric
  • impulsive, spontaneous
  • dramatic, unstable
  • sentimental
  • disorderly, messy
  • adventurous
  • wise, clever; funny
  • charismatic
  • individualistic
  • rowdy, irresponsible

Adem was always someone who was hard to keep under control. He's an explosive person, moods going in one direction and then violently in another, unpredictable and difficult to keep up with. It's like he's running on a motor, constantly going and going and never taking a moment to stop and think, or take a breather. He ends up leaving other people in the dust, racing off to his next thought immediately after the next. Despite his unpredictability, he manages to find moments to contemplate. He's a deep thinker, albeit a quick one, valuing the understanding of others and having strong empathy. He's a lover, first and foremost, and values the connections he has with others intensely, despite his fear of connection as well.

Adem is charming. He manages to make others smile and laugh with little effort. He has a habit of not taking things as seriously as he should, and cracking jokes and puns at inappropriate times. He's sleazy, cunning and mischievous. He knows how to play the game to get to the reward at the end, almost manipulative, but in the way a little boy would be trying to convince his mom that riding down the stairs on a plastic lid is not a hazardous to his health.

Despite this, Adem is an extremely passionate and caring person. He tries his best to understand the plights of his companions and help aid them. He's a good listener, always there if you need someone to talk to, and is very compassionate. Sometimes he is not the most eloquent, but there are times where he surprises people.

Adem, despite his talents, is emotionally immature. He has a wisdom to him but he also has the emotional maturity of a young boy. It's very easy to upset him and he can take things way too seriously way too quickly. He can be really petty about things, while also being super forgiving. Forgiving too quickly is usually reserved for when close friends or partners hurt him though, not with strangers or people he's not the closest with.

As mentioned before, he's very impulsive and his impulsivity also leads to a great carelessness both to himself and others. how this impacts others is that he may say something really mean to someone or rude without really thinking about what he's saying, for example, because it just comes out. Or, he may do something without thinking about how it may make people feel right at that second (i.e. catcalling). If he gives it a moment he CAN understand why it's wrong, and maybe prevent himself from doing so, he's just not really 'the thinker' when the moment is right. He thinks a lot but not at the right fucking times. He's a ponderer but not when he's supposed to be.

Fragile ego. Fragile confidence. You get the deal. When people tell him he's good he takes that and flies so high with it. "Yavuz! You're quite the fighter!" or something and he'll be like YESS!!!!! and goof off the next match and get his ass KICKED. Absolutely PUMMELED. And then he'll get depressed about it and think he's the worst and want to give up. But he's too ambitious, at some point get over it, and keeps doing it keeps doing it anyway.

Not a very neat nor organized person, he kinda doesn't pick up after himself sometimes. He tries and really wants to clean at times, but finds it hard to get started. In most cases his spaces are an "organized mess", like a physical representation of his constantly scattered brain.

He's kinda dumb. He's wise but he's not smart, per se. He's clever but he's not intelligent, per se. I don't know how to really explain this. You just have to trust me. He can pick a lock and come up with a real funny joke, but god forbid you ask him what 3x9 is or what kind of clouds are in the sky today or how to spell sphenopalatine ganglionneuralgia. Or how to spell octopus.

Forgetful! Ohhh, he's so forgetful! He forgets shit everywhere. Literally once every day he'll be like 'where are my sunglasses', and freak out and they're on top of his head. He loses his keys all the time, and spends like 15 mins digging through his bed and checking under the covers only to see that it was sitting on the table the entire time, or was in his pocket.

Very self-destructive. "You smoke cigarettes? That's bad for you." "I know it is" "Why do you do it?" "I don't know." and alcoholism and just the heavy reliance on drugs and sleeping around to keep himself afloat or he feels empty or like he's dying or something. That he's not living. He constantly has to feel like he's living. That he's doing something.

Adem can be very inherently, or unintentionally selfish in his desires. A good example is with relationships, and how he can be extremely loving and caring, but may be afraid of doing something that could destroy or causes rifts in a relationship, and experience abandonment. If you talk to him about how something is affecting the relationship, he takes it in black and whites, and may either stop the behavior at all, if it is negatively impacting the relationship, or continue doing it more, if it's positively impacting it, to ensure that everything stays afloat, and he doesn't lose them. This does not mean he values himself higher than others, or he does not care about his partners; he is a lover, and loves other people greatly, but is afraid of losing that love and may act in ways that are unhealthy or destructive out of fear (not in abusive ways but usually in emotionally intense ones or self-sabotage in a weird way of achieving self-preservation). Usually, he may avoid getting into relationships altogether because of this habit of his anxiety with imagined abandonment, but there are times where he cannot help himself and falls too fast, and too hard.

Adem is kind of a difficult character to explain so if you are ever curious about him or want to ask a question about his character, I would love to elaborate on it. You make a comment , and I will very happily write you a whole essay.

Background

Childhood

Adem grew up in the city of New York. Born in Manhattan, his family soon after moved to Brooklyn, where his mother opened a liquor store, their home nestled above. His father was absent throughout most of his early adolescence, busy entertaining the nation with his romantic songs and easy-listening jazz. Adem's mother was left on her own to take care of her restless son, who proved to be, without a doubt, the most bastardy sonuvabitch she could ever allow to leave her womb.

He picked up Italian and Yiddish growing up, being fully fluent in English and Italian. Hebrew was something he practiced at home with his family, as his mother is Jewish and wanted to raise Adem Jewish as well.

As one would expect, Adem was a problem child. He had been expelled from the city middle school as quickly as he got in, and suspended countless of times once he had reached his high school years. He found comfort in skipping class to smoke in the boys' restroom, or pull fire alarms with his friends when he got bored enough. He despised any higher figure that tried to put him in his place, and lashed out when they tried to punish him. He struggled bit in school due to his neurodivergency and dyslexia, and found himself a bit outcast. He was bullied a bit for various things, ranging from his appearance to his learning disabilities. Those things only made him more ambitious to succeed however, and despite never being the gifted, straight-A student, he still managed to pass his courses.

His father, Levent, was consistently absence in his early years, who he knew was around and was famous for his music, but never financially supported the family he left behind. He loathed his father for so long because of this, and his rebellious nature was partially in an effort to gain the attention of his parents. Like a sick and twisted call for help, unaware of how immature and silly his mode of effort was.

His mother was also emotionally distant in a lot of ways, making it difficult for Adem to connect with her when she wasn't taking Adem to see movies, one of the few things that ever did together. She could be rough and blunt with her love and how she communicated with Adem, leading to a lot of fights. He never hated her as much as he genuinely hated his father, however, for how despite marrying her, never fully returned home until he was 16, mostly to save his own ass and runaway from his debts. See Levent Yavuz's profile for more information on this.

Neighborhood

Adem's neighborhood was a mix of Jewish, Italian, and Latino people, most predominantly Jewish and Italian. Apart from his father, Adem had no personal connection to his middle eastern and Turkish side, as well as Islam. Adem was able to learn Italian fluently from both his mother always speaking it at home, and speaking it frequently outside of the home. Various dialects of Yiddish and Spanish were also common in this neighborhood.

Crime was moderate, if not a bit higher than average, and the community was rather tight-knit, and people knew each other pretty well.

Trivia

  • Adem is a part of a gang called "The Bats." They don't actually call themselves Bats, it sort of happened on a whim and stuck as an inside joke. It consists of all of Adem's closest friends, Elvio, Boston, Matchstick, and eventually Billy.
  • Adem has a passion for cars and racing. He loves going out and doing illegal drag races, the dirt coming off of the ground as his wheels dangerously skid around a corner of a no longer peaceful neighbourhood. He could spend the rest of his life in a car.
  • Adem is a boxer. He boxes for a small club, not well known but not entirely obscure either. They get a good number of visitors to see matches. It's an outlet for the mess of emotions Adem is constantly experiencing. And also to see hot guys get sweaty and flex their muscles. But he wouldn't tell you that last part.
  • When Adem was younger, he had numerous hyperfixations. His first ever fixation was on dinosaurs, and then on DC comics, and cars; there are countless other fixations he developed during his childhood and still develops now, unlisted for time's sake.
  • Adem can speak almost four languages. Fluently he can speak English and Italian, English being his first language and Italian being his second. He can recognize Turkish words and phrases because of his father, and knows Yiddish and Hebrew from his mother and the neighbourhood he grew up in. He can also say a few numbers in Arabic, but that doesn't really count.
  • Although he is ethnically Jewish, he feels a strong disconnection to religion. He had only been raised within the culture, with very minimal knowledge on its religious practices, only having been exposed to such from short, bittersweet celebrations with his mother, absent of his father, and from classmates and neighbours. It was never a big part of his identity, or at least, never something he truly recognized and embraced.
  • His car's name is "Babygirl." He saved up his own money to buy it once he had gained his license (through long and long trial and error).
  • He has every movie ticket from every movie he has ever seen.
  • He had two "boyfriends" in secret in middleschool and highschool respectively. One of them he did photobooth photos with he still has.
  • His first name is Turkish, and means "of the Earth".
STORY

His story kickstarts mainly in college, where he meets his future lifelong partner Billy. Since he was young he wanted to become an actor, or if that failed, a stand-up comic. He started taking classes in Pennsylvania to kickstart his career and develop his talents.

In 1957, Adem stars as the leading face of a Christmas romantic comedy, Unlikely Miracles, where he plays as a remedied criminal who happens to fall in love with a girl, antics ensue. Before his first film he played mostly small roles, and sometimes unfortunately typecasted in delinquent or rebellious roles. He did whatever he could to break this typecasting, and starred in a lot of roles that branched out and diversified what he played as, such as a cowboy, or a military official.

Alongside Billy, they avoided the critical eyes of their audiences on their relationship, keeping its homosexual nature on the downlow to keep their careers intact, however in the safety of places like nightclubs that catered to queer men, and friends who accepted and loved them, they were publicly, and annoyingly affectionate. Their relationship strengthed their creatitivity, both muses to one another. Billy, notably, wrote a lot of songs that described inexplictly the intensity of their love.

When Adem died in 2007, he was not forgotten; his memory was solidified by the remarkable talent he had on screen and off screen, and his importance to queer history. His story as well as the story of Billy are favourites of queer historians, and lots of their photos together managed to make their way onto the internet. Adem's movies are still watched, and tributes are sometimes made; he never became Marlon Brando, or James Dean, but did something just as special, ensuring his permanent spot in old Hollywood history.
