About
Rat is a non-bender in a world that's centered around bending, which his family was less than pleased about. He was mostly pushed to the side in favor of his brother, Beaver. Fortunately (probably) he ended up as Zeolite's apprentice which introduced him to Pip, who instantly decided that the angry bastard of an apprentice needed to be adopted. Despite his initial bristling, Rat somehow ended up with a dad (who he will swear until his dying day Stockholm Syndromed him into joining the family). Now he's the oldest brother of an unreasonable amount of younger siblings and it actually really happy.
Summary
rat race
Rat was pushed aside by his family as a non-bender and was overlooked. He grew up very bitter and resentful about this fact. Fortunately, family isn't just who you're related to by blood. When Rat was apprenticed to Zeolite, he didn't know that it would end up with Zeolite's friend Pip taking one look at his sad-bad-boy aesthetic and deciding that this was a child that needed adopting regardless of any protests.
Despite himself, Pip grew on Rat like a fungus. He's actually incredibly fond of the old man and would kill in his defense no matter how bristly he is or how much he denied the fact.
Then Zeolite had kids, and Pip ended up essentially becoming a step-parent, and Rat assumed he would be pushed to the side in favor of their 'real' family that they were building. Except... the exact opposite happened. Pip still eagerly sought him out, spent quality time with him, and supported his interests.
Rat ended up becoming an older brother to Rosolite and Yucca. And then Pip brought home two more kids. Adopted, just like Rat.
Then Pip and Zeolite had a litter of three - Blackberry, Buttercup, and Chipmunk. And even though Pip now had some actual biological children to tend to as well as his five adopted kids, he never treated Rat as any less part of the family.
During all this family expansion, Rat stumbled across a private garden on the edge of the territory. Through this, he met the garden's caretaker - Marble, a cat who was quiet and stern and had recently brought a kitten home with him, apparently his daughter by a loner from outside the clans.
For some reason, they struck up a weird friendship that comprised of sitting together in silence and gardening together. Marble seemed very hesitant to bend at first, and Rat showed him a trick or seven that he'd picked up a non-bender.
Weirdly, they became good friends. Enough that when the noise of his various siblings got to be a little too much, he ended up moving in with Marble and Pothos.
They haven't really put a name on their relationship, but it is a relationship of some kind. It may not look like others relationships, but Marble somehow became someone very important to Rat. Important enough to center his life around their partnership and move in with him and babysit Pothos. It works for them, and at the end of the day that's what's most important.

Trivia
- Rat was originally sun--ray's character in the group dawn-of-destinies.
- His original fate was that he left the clan to explore without another word, which I have lovingly retconned from his backstory!
- Rat was sort of the catalyst for Pip's relationship with Zeolite since Pip highkey adopted him and because Rat was Zeolite's apprentice, the two suddenly had split custody of their angry little bastard.
- Rat is Pip's first kid so he always had a special place in my heart - so I eventually reached out to Rat's original rper years after dod closed and asked if I could buy Rat from them. And they said yes!! <3

Rat was sort of forcibly adopted by Pip, who had extreme dad energy and no children at the time. Despite his complaints, Rat eventually came around to the idea of being family. Now he's just stuck with them - but in a good way.
For whatever reason, Rat stumbled across Marble's secret garden and the two became friends. And then more than friends? They've never really known how to put a name on it, but they're both important to one another.
With Marble in his life, of course Marble's most important person - his daughter - ended up in Rat's life as well. While they don't necessarily consider one another father-and-daughter, Pothos appreciates that Rat makes her dad happy.
Blackberry is one of Rat's youngest siblings - and a right terror. Blackberry is probably the kid who takes after their dad the most, to Rat's (exaggerated) horror. But he does love the stupid kid, and makes sure to spend time with her.
Chipmunk another of Rat's youngest siblings. For some reason, Rat is the de facto babysitter - though he doesn't mind too terribly. Chipmunk is, at least, one of the quietest of his siblings and so the easiest to hang around.
Rat loves all of his siblings, he does but Buttercup is, in a word, exhausting. Even so, Rat ends up being the one who takes Buttercup through the territory and lets the kid run around wearing themself out. This apparently makes Rat the favorite.
Rosolite was one of Rat's first obtained siblings. He loves her a lot, though he finds her irritating like most older brothers find their younger sisters. Honestly, Rat was a bit jealous of her for being their mother's 'real' child for a long time.
Rat adores Kestrel - while he does love all of his siblings, Kes and Cam were the first non-benders in the family besides Rat himself. While he's less bitter about his lack of bending now, it's still nice to have others who understand.
Rat loves Morning in a rolling-his-eyes-about-it kind of way. She's part of his weird family, after all, and Morning was extremely accepting about her newest grandchild. Despite Rat's protests about said title. He respects her a lot.
