"I've always been told that I'm full of life, but god, if you knew. There are so many times that I wish I wasn't alive at all. It's so silly to me that I'm still trying to find some reason to live. Haha, maybe this is why I haven't given up yet."

― Rei Shimakage, Persona 3

Rei Shimakage is a playable character originating from Persona 3. She is one of the original members of S.E.E.S and a student at Gekkoukan High School. Evidently working through the repressed trauma of her past, Rei puts herself forward to ultimately change her debilitating circumstances. She later on becomes an elite field member of the Shadow Operatives under Mitsuru Kirijo, and eventually one of their head researchers in neuroscience and its relation to Personas as a whole. In Persona 5, Rei is revealed to be the half sister of the Phantom Thief, Masayuki Azai.

Profile

Appearance

Rei is a young woman with just about a slightly above average height of 5′6. Her skin tone is rather pallid and pale, but despite the assumed health concern, Rei’s skin color is quite natural. She is notably a lot thinner to the point it might be addressed as unhealthy. Her overall natural body shape is quite petite. Despite her round face shape, it looks a little sharper than should be because of her body weight. Her eye color is maroon, which leans a little more on the magenta side. She has very curly hair that fairly touch her shoulders, and has quite noticeable eye bags. She is said by some to appear dead because of her pale skin and red eyes; but because she is springing with life, the previous description of her looking dead is rendered obsolete. However; after Rei gets into fights with her bullies and assailants, her strikingly dark bruises and red patches have others referring to her as a walking corpse. She cares very little for how she is described to others, for she believes the general population fear the dead in the first place.

She has no skin markings whatsoever. Whatever bruises and scars she had from beatings at home were healed thanks to the healing abilities of the Personas the other SEES members possess. Though, at first glance, one could say she has attractive lashes. It’s confirmed that Rei doesn’t use false lashes. She is also notably the tallest female member of SEES, standing at 5'6, an inch taller than Mitsuru Kirijo.

Personality

"You know what they say about me, for someone who looks dead, I am very much alive. If there's anything that's going to kill me, I won't let it be anything, nor anyone, but myself. Nobody else is worthy of taking my own life away from me."
― Rei Shimakage, Persona 3

Rei often comes off as a demure and bright young lady. Though she often appears to be easily approachable, it's rather difficult to talk to her on numerous occasions. Rei is both selective and secretive under her friendly smile, which more often than not lead people to think she has ulterior motives. She could not care less of what other people think of her, and simply goes her own way for as long she is aware she is bringing no harm to others. Her aloofness coupled with her friendly exterior make others believe her to be someone who should not be trusted. Rei has little to no trust in new people, and evidently struggles to give others the honest benefit of the doubt to prove themselves to her. She emotionally distances herself from new people, but painfully latches on to the people who have gained her trust.

Coupled with her lack of trust in others, she shows evident discomfort around males due to her past sexual trauma as a child. Though she remains friendly, she keeps them at an arm's distance, and becomes evidently anxious and jittery should one force himself closer to her, leaving her in a state of panic that may escalate to violence, and later on, may enable her viciousness to surface. On the other side of the spectrum, Rei is far more friendly to women, becoming more open and receptive to them.

Though Rei remains secretive of her personal details and emotionally shuts herself away from personal relationships, she is incredibly blunt and honest, and as much as possible, is actually a spitfire. She is not afraid to say her mind in any situation she is faced with. To an extent, one can say Rei is headstrong, coupled with recklessness. She often puts her foot forward whenever she is given the opportunity, and is not afraid to shoulder the consequences that she will have to deal with. It can be said that when it comes to professional work, Rei is incredibly reliable and will always push herself beyond her limits until she burns out and even would mentally strain herself. Even when told to lay off, if she could still breathe and do what she is supposed to do, she will push her limits even if it meant killing her. Her hardheadedness is something she knows she should work on, but she has no other way of coping otherwise.

Rei's overexertion bleeds into her self worth issues. As she suffers some mental issues worsened by lackluster therapy, stress, and emotional neglect at home, her mental state is rather frazzled on a daily basis, forcing her into uncalled mood swings and intrusive thoughts. To cope, she hyperfocuses on her duties to avoid giving into the thoughts of harming herself. As she struggles with suicidal thoughts, she sometimes thinks of ways to end her own life all the while trying to make it look like it was not her. She would never want to burden people with her plans, and often suffers in silence. That being said, Rei often feels she should bear the weight of all her consequences on her own, even if it killed her. She believes her crosses are hers to bear alone.

Although Rei looks pretty and dainty, she is far from either. As mentioned previously, she is a spitfire with a blazing tenacity. She is far from reserved and halpess, and she makes sure others know it. However; she tries to avoid too much trouble, understanding that she cannot always get away with everything she does. Rei attempts to practice patience with others, but her patience runs low at alarming rates once she realizes her kindness is being taken advantage of. While Rei had been learning how to ignore and deal in silence, she does not take kindly to abuse, most particularly from the bullying she had suffered for years over petty reasons. It is because of the abuse she has suffered from others, and repressed trauma from her past projecting themselves in times of distress, Rei had grown a very sturdy backbone that disables her from pulling away until she has clawed her way to the top of the situation. In turn, this has made her extremely vicious with others who try to harm her, or her friends. In the end, Rei had gotten herself into physical trouble if her words are not venomous enough to her enemies. That being said, Rei is not as kind nor patient as she looks, and over the course of the game, had developed a sweet but threatnening demeanor that shouldn't be crossed, lest a person desires to feel her wrath.

It's become very difficult for Rei to genuinely care and feel empathy for others, which falls in line with her lack of trust. It takes months, sometimes years for Rei to feel anything genuine towards others. It is known that the only people she shows any form of concern to are the members of SEES. Her gravitation towards the older members alongside her is because they had built trust since their childhood, which also explains her tentative nature towards newer members from Yukari onward. A method to speed up the process of gaining her trust is through daily, continuous interaction. SEES, compared to her peers at school, have gotten past her tentative barriers rather quickly. Rei had a far easier time easing up to the new girls in SEES, while she still remained cautious of the new male members. Regardless, due to their harsh struggles and fights among themselves, bonding with them had made it fast for Rei to actually treasure them and look out for them as if they were her family. Getting past her reservations and fears brings about one of the most loyal people anyone could ask for. While not blindly devoted, Rei's inhibitions are evidently gone by the time she puts all her faith and trust in someone. While already springing with life, she is, as a matter of fact, more genuine as a person when she shares a close bond with someone.

Story

Early Life

Rei was born as an unnamed baby to a couple out of wedlock. Her biological father abandoned her biological mother, whom had no means to care for the baby. She was left at an orphanage, and the matrons running the place named her Rei, meaning 'specter' for how pale she looked. She was thought to have died in the cold, only to have cried out later that night. Rei was raised in the orphanage, eventually becoming childhood friends with Akihiko Sanada, his sister Miki and Shinjiro Aragaki. As a child, she never had much problem with the caretakers or the other children. She was a child springing with life and got along with just about anyone. Rei was adopted rather early, at the age of six. Rei had lost contact with her friends at the orphanage, and was unaware of the fire that had destroyed it later on. Being adopted by a single mother, for a year she lived happily, up until being introduced to her new mother's far older partner who had moved in. It started simple at first, as he acted kindly towards Rei and the latter saw him as a new father figure. Clouded by the illusion that she was being loved and cared for by her new father, it was quick to escalate into child sexual abuse. It was almost convenient for him to have his way with the poor girl, as he worked at home and her adoptive mother had to work late hours into the night. Too young to realize what was happening, Rei was forced to comply to her adoptive father's sexual desires; but when she refused, he'd punish her and physically abuse her. Rei was quick to clam up around her father, and whenever her mother asked about her bruises, her father often answered for her, saying she was being bullied in school. Believing the lie, this made way for Rei's first experience with parental negligence. In 1999, upon the creation of the Dark Hour, Rei retained her consciousness during this time; however refusing to sleep due to the silence and the fear of hearing the havy footsteps of her father. She lived in fear and in the silence of the Dark Hour for a year and a half.

One fateful day in 2000, Rei panicked when her father had tried to rape her. She took a knife in self defense, and used it against him. Her screaming and her fathers bellowing were heard by the neighbors, who called the police on them. Rei was found being held down by her father, who was about to rape her. Immediately, she was taken away from her home, and her mother was incarcerated for child jeopardy and negligence. Her father was sent to death row. Stuck in child services, Rei was recommended to be given rehabilitation and therapy. Begging to return to the orphanage, Rei was told that it had burned down years ago, and the surviving children were sent to different foster homes. Heartbroken, she ended up complying to be sent to another foster home. It did not take long for Rei to be adopted by a single mother, whos husband took full custody of their daughter after a divorce. Rei was extremely guarded with her new adoptive mother, but the latter was told that Rei is a survivor of child sexual abuse, and that she has to be well taken care of. Her new mother worked at home most of the time, only leaving when she is called to work. Rei was apprehensive most of the time, even though her mother took her out to eat and simply went outside with her. It became evident to her when the little girl would begin to cry or hide behind her whenever an older man approached them. She now understood why Rei needed to go through therapy and rehabilitation. However; when she had noticed Rei's strange behavior especially after the Dark Hour, she took to observing the girl. It then gets revealed that Rei's new mother is a researcher for the Kirijo Group, specializing in anti-shadow technology and countermeasures. She brought it to the attention of Takeharu Kirijo, and requested equipment and an assistant who is conscious during the Dark Hour to help monitor Rei. When asked, she only responded that Rei is likely to have The Potential. Progress was slow, but reports on Rei's activity during the Dark Hour reveals that she experiences the Dark Hour 100%, and is able to retain consciousness. She displayed the symptoms of confusion and forgetfulness, but that had decreased over time up until her last year of elementary. With the decreasing symptoms and a clearer consciousness that she does experience the Dark Hour, Rei was sent to Gekkoukan for further observation. By this time, Rei's therapy and rehabilitation had improved her overall condition, and she was beginning to open up again. However; as a defensive mechanism, she instinctively repressed memories of her trauma; the symptoms only projecting when certain events trigger her.

Before starting school in Gekkoukan, she is formally introduced to Mitsuru Kirijo. It was very formal, considering how Mitsuru acted and how stunted Rei remained. Understanding her circumstances, Mitsuru asked to be alone with Rei to talk to her. Mitsuru has gotten straight to the point, asking Rei if she had been experiencing strange things at night. Stumped, Rei was given no choice but to answer. It shocked her that she was not the only one experiencing it. Wanting answers as to why she experiences this, she partially lowers her defenses for Mitsuru. However; the chances of Rei summoning a Persona was rather slightly unstable, and she needed further observation before she could be given an evoker.

It was also during Middle School that Rei was reunited with Akihiko and Shinjiro. They were far different people from then, and they had to kind of reintroduce themselves to each other. Because they were of the opposite sex, Rei was extremely guarded. Both took offense to this, due to being childhood friends and could not wrap their head around why Rei was acting scared around them. Due to this, she gravitated towards Mitsuru and asked for her help in trying to make them understand that she can't explain why she acts in such a manner. Mitsuru agreed only because she knew Rei had a condition. Upon realizing that both Akihiko and Shinjiro both experienced the Dark Hour, Mitsuru recruits them in, and also uses this as an opportunity to help them reconnect.

In time, Rei was taken to Tartarus upon the behest of her mother. Mitsuru, Akihiko and Shinjiro were present as backup. The two boys already recruited and Rei was there to be tested if she will awaken to a Persona. Being sent into the first floor with Akihiko and Shinjiro following close behind, Rei was able to (easily and instinctively) summon Achlys when attacked by a Shadow. Shocked at her lack of hesitation, it is then speculated that Rei's survival instincts are sharpened, which would possibly explain the situation. With that, Rei was recruited into SEES. She came out with plenty of questions, disregarding the fact that she was shaking in fear. Her mother calmed her down, and explained everything to her. Feeling pressured that she has to fight these Shadows, Rei reluctantly agrees to join SEES and to undergo training. Due to her physique, Rei was unable to train with heavier weapons, and thus developed an adeptness at projectiles such as blades, darts and throwing knives. Due to being in SEES now, it was easier for Rei to adapt and adjust to the presence of her old friends and reconnected with them, trying to take the initiative to explain to them why she was so guarded. Reconnecting with them was a huge step for her, and the four being friends even outside of SEES helped Rei develop an independence and personal strength that contributed to her current confidence and tenacity. Further combat with the Shadows had allowed her to help discover Jiro Miyamae's potential as a Persona user a few months later, enabling his recruitment into SEES.

In the first year of High School, Shinjiro's incident with accidentally killing Ken Amada's mother and subsequent departure had caused Rei to work with the rest of SEES and attempt to fill in the lack of hands, despite being a fairly good number. Tartarus exploration was difficult as a whole due to the lack of proper outside support in spite of the fact that currently, SEES had a good roster.

Rei's background on being severely bullied started in the last year of middle school all the way to her final year of high school. Due to Akihiko's popularity as 'Gekkoukan's Golden Boy', Rei's closeness to him as a whole was not taken well by his fangirls, particularly those who were popular in the student body. While Rei had a relatively good reputation among the students, that was quickly ruined by rumors spread around. This was made worse by her evident lack of friends outside SEES. From rumors, it had escalated into physical bullying. While expected to cry and cower, Rei's reflexive instincts has caused her to fight back. Even with the help of Sakuya Outsuka, the bullying didn't cease. Plenty of popular girls within Akihiko's fanbase saw her as an enemy, and some have even tried to ruin how Akihiko's, and even Mitsuru's opinion of her. Whenever Rei got physically bullied, it ended in violence. Numerous times the administration had tried to expel her and her bullies, but due to her connections to the Kirijo Group and Mitsuru herself, Rei was saved. To her bullies, Rei was alarmingly strong and vicious, which contributed to the lessesning of physical encounters with her bullies.

Before the Protagonist arrived to Tatsumi Port Island and Iwatodai, Rei had to pull away from SEES due to her mother becoming ill. While their bills and medical expenses were sponsored by the Kirijo Group, the lack of a guardian made Rei the only viable option to help her ailing mother.

The Journey

Rei is first seen in April, when she is being bullied by Tomie Anegakoji and her friends. The Protagonist has the option to interrupt and break the fight. If the fight is broken up, Rei's talksprite will show that she has bruised lips. She thanks the Protagonist for stepping in, telling him that it's been the first time in a long time that anyone stood up for her, and walks away like nothing happened. There will be numerous instances wherein the Protagonist will then speak to Rei. In May, she approaches the Protagonist and welcomes him to SEES, surprised that they managed to get new members. He is surprised that she is a member herself, and asks why she hasn't returned if she is a member. However; the protagonist will be able to see her around the dorms from May onwards, but only during Wednesdays and Fridays. Due to needing to care for her mother, Rei does not return to SEES until June.

Rei returns before the Full Moon on June 8th, stating that she is returning to SEES after her mother is back to normal working conditions. Akihiko turns to ask her about her Persona and if she is able to handle well, dismissing his question, Rei gets formally introduced to Junpei Iori. Due to her lack of practice, she opts to stay behind and hold the fort with Yukari and Mitsuru. When Arcana Empress and Arcana Emperor attack, Rei is defeated along with Yukari and Mitsuru. Following this event and the rescue of Fuuka Yamagishi, Rei helps reaccomodate Saburo Maeda into the Gekkoukan Dorms and at least help shelter him in spite of the death threats against his family. Due to the busy schedule, Rei cannot be seen for the next few days up until June 13th; when Fuuka is now accomodated into the Dorms.

When Yukari begins to question Mitsuru around July, Rei becomes visibly upset with Yukari's attitude. While she cannot blame her for wanting answers, she was causing trouble within SEES and tried to stay focused on the task at hand, ultimately brushing off Yukari's feelings. Rei knew for a fact that she didn't have a choice to awaken to a Persona, she was coaxed into it without her knowledge and was offended when Yukari brushed off Rei's discomfort, accusing her of "blind devotion" to the Kirijo group. a close call to a panic attack, Laiko Shirozaki was quick to snap at Yukari and berate her for her self-righteousness. With this, he stormed off, bringing Rei to her room before she could break down. For the next few months, Rei was bitter with Yukari, even going as far as to glare daggers her way during the Yakushima vacation.

In Yakushima, Rei spent most of her time with Megumi Uchiyama, a fairly new member of SEES that she had gotten fairly close to as the new school year rolled in.

Forgetting that it was October 4, Rei's realization of the date throws her off into a frantic state. She, along with the other members of SEES rush to Shinjiro and Ken. Upon arriving, Rei desperately pleas to both Ken and Shinjiro to stop this and to just come back home. Though not specifically responsible for the death of Mrs. Amada, Rei still apologizes profusely for they were not able to do anything. Ken silences her and tells her that it's not her, or anyone else that he is mad at, but Shinjiro. When Takaya Sakaki arrives, Rei is struck with shock, unable to move or do anything while Shinjiro gets shot. Dazed, she only reacts when she realizes that Shinjiro fell to the ground, dying. Takaya takes his leave, and Rei ends in tears, frantically trying to get Yukari, Mitsuru or anyone to heal Shinjiro. However; Shinjiro passes, and she cries over the loss of her childhood friend.

Social Link

[[ tba :: I'm changing Rei's relationship with her adoptive mother but it will still be strained ]]

Portable

Rei's role is reprised in Persona 3 Portable, with minimal changes to her character's role. However; should the player decide to play as the Female Protagonist, it will be easier to approach Rei and advance her Social Link. Responses to her are made more open and casual as compared to the dismissive but careful responses of the Male Protagonist. With the Female Protagonist, Rei's conviction becomes stronger as a result of having more faith in the same sex. She becomes vehemently protective of the Female Protagonist, who has given her the courage to live through the pain and keep living. Additionally, Rei is an available romance option for the Female Protagonist.

The Answer

Rei, along with the rest of SEES, becomes trapped in the Abyss of Time. Confused, she thought it was over when Nyx was defeated. Throughout the exploration in the Abyss of Time, Rei comes to realize the pasts of her fellow SEES members, as well as revealing her own. Before the end of Caina, and seeing AKihiko's past, Rei's past is then revealed; due to their close relation in childhood. Rei's past reveals her history of sexual abuse from her adoptive father, to her violent outburst that had saved her. It also shows how she was transitioning into a healthier life; however still huanted by the trauma to this day. In this flashback, Rei is shown to have suffered chronc nightmares following her abuse. Lastly, Rei is shown awakening to Achlys during her first operation in Tartarus, and how her survival instinct had awoken sense into her that she is above the circumstances she is put in.

Upon the defeat of SEES's manifested negative wills and collective desire to see the Protagonist one last time, Aigis realizes they have the ability to travel back to the time where the protagonist seals Nyx. Enraged by Aigis' indecisiveness about whether to return to the past, Yukari lashes out, revealing that she's jealous of Aigis for being together with the protagonist and hearing his last words during his final moments. When Yukari lashes out at Saburo as well, jealous that he won the Protagonist's heart and is now acting cold; Rei attempts to stop Saburo from backhanding Yukari across the face, to no avail. While Rei understands Yukari's grief, she begs to differ with her, telling her that she cannot stand to interfere with what's meant to be. He gave his life for everyone, and that they should try their best for him. With this, Rei teams up with Sakuya.

Rei's ability to better handle loss and death is because she was painfully attached to Shinjiro Aragaki, her childhood friend; and Laiko Shirozaki, who could have been considered her best friend. Losing the protagonist was painful to her, but also made her realize that it's really a part of life, and that while they still breathe, they should cherish every moment together. One will never know when their companions will leave them, especially if they leave so suddenly, so soon.

After the defeat of Erebus, Rei escapes with the rest from the Abyss of Time, and subsequently, the dorms.

Persona 4

Rei is very birefly seen during the School Trip to Tatsumi Port Island. When Zion sneaks away from the classes on the trip to visit Laiko's grave, an older Rei is seen leaving the cemetery where he's buried. She exchanges glances with Zion, but only stops to look at him after he's passed her. She wasn't sure if it really was the Zion Shirozaki, so she did not call out to him. She is never seen again for the rest of the game.

Persona 4: Arena Ultimax

By this time Rei is already in college, taking Microbiology as a prerequisite to Neuroscience. Due to the incident in Inaba, she is called by Mitsuru Kirijo to assist the Shadow Operatives. She equips her evoker once again and sets off to Inaba. She reunites with her old teammates and takes this as an opportunity to observe the possibility of new Persona users. Upon meeting the Investigation Team during the "Tournament", Rei is surprised at their ability to call upon their Personas without an Evoker.

She sees Zion again, after a year. She tells him that she saw him briefly the previous November during the Yasogami High School Trip to Tatsumi Port Island. Zion recognizes her as one of Laiko's old friends, and is surprised to see that she is able to use a Persona as well. Because of Zion's ability to summon a Persona, Rei asks for Mitsuru's permission to examine him when she has the time, to which her request was approved.

In the meantime, throughout the Tournament, Rei assists Mitsuru and the other Shadow Operatives members in retrieving Labrys. She later reaches out to Zion to personally invite him into the Shadow Operatives, and has arranged with Mitsuru that they will answer any and all questions regarding Laiko's association with them, now that it's clear to all parties that they are all Persona Users.

Persona 5

Rei will make an appearance after Futaba Sakura's Palace. She will be seen having coffee and curry in LeBlanc and the protagonist can strike up a conversation with her. Sojiro and Rei are in conversation about her association with Wakaba Isshiki, and she does her best to reassure Sojiro that she is not there with any malicious intent nor the intent to take Futaba away. Sojiro will ask the Protagonist to leave for a while, as he discusses with Rei that Wakaba's research is destroyed and nowhere to be found. Dejected, Rei thanks Sojiro, and send her regards to Futaba. Upon leaving, Rei takes a good look at the Protagonist, and greets him before leaving, apologizing that Sojiro had to keep him out like that.

Shortly after, Masayuki Azai will approach the Protagonist telling him he's had the scare of his life. When asked, Masayuki reveals that he was curious about the Cognitive Psience that Futaba mentioned in passing in regards to her mother, and that he has found someone who may know something about it. The trouble is, is that this very woman ended up knocking on his door and causing panic within the Azai Residence as to how she got past security. It is revealed that Rei had an idea she was tagged, due to her phone being bugged. With help, presumably from the Kirijo Group technicians, she locates the source of the bug and ends up in a Yakuza Stronghold. She explains that she is only there to ask questions, and why she had her phone bugged. When all misunderstanding is cleared, Masayuki's mother invites Rei for dinner in apology for stressing her. Masayuki finds his mother's sudden warmness strange, and decides to look into Rei. He had a strange hunch on his mother's treatment.

Demanding a DNA test, Masayuki explains to Rei that it's for a bit of an extensive database record. His mother then backs him up that it's sort of protocol, everyone is required to comply (although it's clear to her that Masayuki was trying to pull something, but she spared herself the conflict if she told him he was being ridiculous). Finding it strange and not wanting to take risks, she complies. Surprised at the quick results, it shocks Masayuki that certain DNA marks she has match up with his mother's. Finding it preposterous, Rei demands she takes a look. To her surprise, these DNA marks matched up. Somehow, she had just endded up reconnecting with her biological mother, which likely explained her very warm treatment of Rei. Mrs. Azai only says that her intuition told her to treat Rei with the kindness she gives to Masayuki, but she would never have thought she would see the daughter she abandoned twenty four years ago,

It is then revealed that Rei was abandoned due to the fact that her mother was unable to take care of her. She lacked the means and resources to do so. She dropped her off at the orphanage in hopes of being able to take her back in when the time came, but had resorted to a life of crime and had become affiliated with an associate to the Tokudaiji Conglomerate. When she finally had the resources and means to take her daughter back, the orphanage had burnt down. Mrs. Azai is moved to tears to see that the daughter she had thought died in the fire grew up to be strong and is standing in front of her now. While Rei still has her apprehensions, she is more moved by the fact that she reconnected with her mother. Afterwards, Rei can be seen around the Azai residence for the rest of the game. The protagonist can hold a conversation with her as well.

Rei can be later seen around Tokyo speaking to the former SEES members who are in Tokyo, and have made appearances throughout the game.

Gameplay

Party Member

Rei skills are heavily Ice and Darkness based, and due to these affinities, she has strong resistances against them. Her secondary skills fall under Physical skills that specifically fall under Pierce attacks and various Stat effects. Due to her primary skills, Rei has a weakness to Fire and Light Skills. Her weakness to Light Skills render her vulnerable to one hit-kills such as Hama. Without the help of Light-Resistant accessories, Rei will require the help of revival items.

Upon the evolution of her Persona Achlys into Hel, Rei's attirbutes change. Her previous resistance to Ice and Darkness changed to Absorption for Ice and Block for Darkness. She retains her weakness to Light, but Fire skills no longer exploit her weakness. However; as mentioned before, without Light-resistant accessories, Rei will still remain vulnerable to one-hit kills.

Rei's melee attacks are quick and numerous in succession, being able to give 3x to 5x damage to a single enemy due to her throwing blades. Due to the size and the nature of her weapon, Rei's base attack is rather low. She has excellent range and aim. If a Party Member Power Charges Rei or boosts her attack, there will be a possibility of Rei landing massive damage on an enemy.

Trivia

  • Photography is kind of central to her character. Preserving memories to her is what she considers to be her most healthy coping mechanism. She claims to "enjoy filling them with color" which is the excuse she gives as to why she always uses different films, filters, ISOs, anything. She keeps albums upon albums of group photos, serious, formal, silly, casual, everything.
  • Despite how she looks, Rei is known to be rather frugal, and more often than not spends her money on discount items that she simply takes good care of them to keep their condition. She is not known to spend on other things aside from cameras and film, really.
  • Rei's recruitment into SEES came before the following (listed chronologically), Laiko Shirozaki, Jiro Miyamae and Saburo Maeda. Rei personally found Jiro and saved him before Mitsuru, Akihiko and Shinjiro managed to find him.
  • Rei's doll-like and lolita imagery and themes are heavily inspired by Emilie Autumn, more specifically her song Gothic Lolita. The song as well was my inspiration for her change in backstory to that of child sexual abuse. Additionally, the earlier development of this current Rei stemmed from the character of Juuzou Suzuya, who is also associated with the number 13 and the Death Arcana.
  • Looking doll-like is a very conscious decision on her part entirely. Rei is self-aware that she does look good in frills and ribbons, which is what she wears a lot. Discovering the 'lolita' style has really paved way for Rei finding her own style, but with a simpler, more practical twist to it.
