"How do you convince someone to be more like you? I . . . I have never wanted anything more to wither away and disappear. I can't handle this, yet I can't understand how you could still be standing in front of me now. You've had it worse, didn't you?"
― Jiro Miyamae to the Protagonist, Persona 3

Jiro Miyamae is a playable character in Persona 3. He is also one of the original members of S.E.E.S and a student at Gekkoukan High, and is considered to be a potential national youth artist for his artistic talent. Due to this attention, Jiro has been constantly abused by his family for fame and money leading him to develop horrible anxiety and subsequent deliberate isolation. Later on, Jiro gets named as a nationally-renowned artist, as well as a member of the Shadow Operatives under Mitsuru Kirijo. It is revealed that Jiro holds an elite position within the Shadow Operatives, leading operations and raids under Mitsuru's jurisdiction. In a cameo he has in Persona 5, it is revealed that he is the older brother of Nanami Kurokawa.

Profile

Appearance

Jiro is a very tall young man standing at 6'0 feet. He's lanky and almost ghastly. Jiro's skintone is alarmingly pale, with visible eyebags from anxiety indunced insomnia. His eyes are a very pale mint green, lined by a thick array of eyelashes, bringing out his eyes. Underneath his right eye is a mole, and he is littered with a light dusting of freckles. He has pale magenta hair that is messy and unkempt, with a few clumps of strands hovering over his face. His hair also reaches the end of his nape. He has sharp features, notably his cheekbones from his unhealthy weight. Due to his anxiety affecting his physical health, Jiro's lankiness is caused by his bad eating habits. He is known to always wear a weary and dreadful look on his face, which has garnered him comments of likening him to a living corpse or a walking ghost. As far as skin markings are concerned, his mole and freckles have been mentioned; but his thighs sport scars from scratching and self-harm. Over time, these scars heal and leave barely noticeable marks due to Jiro's pallid appearance.

A distinguishing trait of Jiro's are his hairpins. By default, he wears three white hairpins forming an 'IX' (this is to be changed in his reference and icon because my dumb ass mistook Hermit as XI and Strength for IX what a fucking dunce), but he also wears other hairpins such as laurels, bananas and geometric shapes.

Personality

"You can easily tell me that I should put my foot down and finally put myself forward; but you don't get it. They're always there, they're waiting for me to pounce on me and use me as a springboard for their own gain. That's why I hide. I can't handle this anymore."
― Jiro Miyamae, Persona 3

Jiro comes off as extremaly skittish and solitary, often keeping to himself and deliberately isolating himself from others. To an extent, he is considered to be shy, as proven by the fact that he is uncomfortable being in the spotlight or the center of attention. This is not a result of bullying at school, but from abuse he has experienced at home. He has a tendency to suddenly clam up when he is hastily approached by strangers, as well as second guess as to why he was approached in the first place. Though solitary, Jiro has half a mind to remain polite.

In this regard, Jiro has often been thought to be strange and off-putting. His jittery disposition has garnered him mixed reactions from people. There are those who want to help him, those who pity him, and those who don't see him a good light. While it is thought that Jiro isolates himself because of this, he simply disregards them for as long as it does not attract others towards him. He has been known to shy away when others try to offer help, and push away others that try to harm him. Though generally quiet, Jiro has his limits, and has notably snapped at others to leave him alone when he feels overwhelmed. Never has this escalated to violence, and Jiro himself has expressed that he does not want it to reach that point, but will have no real issue if he has no choice but to resort to drastic measures.

He finds social interaction taxing, especially if he has to be the one to step forward in regards to it. Jiro's treatment towards familiar faces and to strangers have a certain polarity. His attitude towards familiar people have a warmer, easier approach. Jiro is known to be a bit more talkative to those he considers close enough to be called 'friends'; whereas his attitude towards strangers is that of a more formal, but slightly cold demeanor. It's in his nature to make it known that if he doesn't know the person, it would be best to keep away. Introducing someone to Jiro is a safer way for him to meet new people, as he will associate such people as friends of friends, and therefore, place them in a 'safe zone' when it comes to familiarity.

Jiro is very much well acquainted with having heavy burdens placed on his shoulders. He has a difficult time 'taking it easy' when responsibilities are held over his head. He develops a one-track mind and hyperfixates on the task at hand, often forgetting to take care of himself in the process. No matter how menial, Jiro has obsessive hyperfixating habits in order for him to do work that is deemed good enough by whomever asked from him, at the cost of his own health. Even when fatigued, when someone expects of Jiro, he does it, afraid of the consequences should he fail. He has an extremely bad habit of blowing consequences out of proportion, and usually he views these things as life-or-death situations.

All these traits are a result of years of abuse at home. From being expected to be the center of attention, being the best in his craft, to always reaching out to other people and being forced to use his talent to earn for his family and none for himself, Jiro has been emotionally backed into a corner. He is well acquainted with emotional neglect that had come from his family, which had affected him in terms on neglecting his own health, often disregarding others' comments on his general welfare. Due to the neglect and abuse he suffers at home, Jiro has developed a harmful mindset of wanting to disappear, which explains his deliberate isolation. He is not suicidal per se, but he is prone to self-harm when his anxiety becomes unbearable.

Jiro is very well aware of his own reputation as an artist, and a young one at that. The attention and glorification that he is given was never much of an issue to him up until his family started holding it over his head. While it is something someone is usually proud of, it is one of the major factors of Jiro's deliverate isolation. His name being constantly held over his head had become so overbearing that Jiro wishes for nothing more than for it to quiet down. He wants to be proud of himself and his talent, but with it being constantly held over him in order to better someone else cripples him greatly.

Though he is quiet, due to the abuse he has suffered at home, Jiro has developed a habit of bearing a silent resentment against others, most especially if he is overwhelmed by them. He does not act on this resentment, but is known to have become colder when it comes to it. He has expressed wanting to say something back, as he has choice words, but his fear often prevents him from doing so. Jiro is notably tense and snippy when frustrated, and this often makes way for him to be braver in speaking his mind; however, he expresses that he does not want to constantly rely on frustration in order for him to have courage. With this, one can say that Jiro's fear is that gives him some restraint, sometimes a little too much.

After the appearance of the Protagonist, Jiro has become progressively braver and more intuitive than he was. Due to the Protagonist's influence, Jiro has slowly begun to open up and speak his mind, as well as developing a friendlier demeanor. This is a result of continuous exposure to the rest of SEES, as well as constant interaction. Jiro has, to a point, developed some independence. However; his fear of being the center of attention remains constant, and with his family still breathing down his neck, Jiro is continuously stifled by the reputation of his that is constantly held over his head.

However; when he was faced with the real danger that threatened him and the rest of SEES, he had come to a realization that his survival instinct is what had kept him alive. Jiro forces himself out of his shell and staggers with his foot forward, tired of forcing himself to hide when it's become clear to him that he cannot keep living the way he does. He develops an inner strength within himself, and throughout the later part of the game, Jiro displays a self-assuredness and a blunt demeanor. Due to coming out of his shell, Jiro has become more expressive, being able to be more open about emotions such as rage and embarrassment. While he maintains his politeness towards others, he is now more confident in standing up for himself, not backing away unless he knows he's lost. By the end of the game, Jiro had developed a far more independent personality, a strikingly paramount difference from when he first appeared.

Story

Early Life

Jiro was born to a fairly well-to-do couple, but wasn't born with the richest lifetyle so to say. Though Jiro was by all means not an accident, his parents had overestimated their financial capability to raise a child. The family didn't plunge into debt or be anywhere near so, but through some miracles, they were able to scrape by.

At a young age, Jiro had begun displaying exceptional artistic ability, skill levels at that age would name him a prodigy. He was particularly "gifted", so to speak, gifted enough that a friend of his father's had taken note of his talent. With Jiro's works taken to an art critic, he was observed, impressing the critic enough to definitely name him a prodigy. Some of Jiro's works were bought and some for sale, with a whole "child prodigy backstory" spun up. Jiro was too young to understand all this, still. With buyers and investors spending frivolously on the story of a child prodigy, Jiro's parents kept pushing him to do art, forcefully isolating him from his peers little by little so he could "focus".

Despite the extra income that had been coming around from time to time, it was simply enough to stabilize his family with how much investors and buyers were willing to pay. However; it was not enough for the family to support the arrival of a second child. Jiro was 9 years old by then, and he knew for a fact that he was supposed to have a brother. He was old enough then to realize that his parents gave his little brother away, never to be seen again. With the harsh and foreceful treatment he got from his parents for being distracted, he was mortified that if he failed to comply, he would be given away as well. He then began to become recluse and kept painting just so they wouldn't be displeased with him. It was also at that age that Jiro began to experience the Dark Hour. As a child, he couldn't understand what was happening, and being kept in the dark about it was a factor in triggering his anxiety induced insomnia. Despite this being a growing health concern, his parents simply thought he was overreacting.

For years, Jiro was decorated and adorned with the title of "child prodigy", and due to this title and his actual skill, he was allowed admission into Gekkoukan through Special Programs in his Middle School years. However; his parents failed to see that their son was becoming majorly overwhelmed by the pressure, as well as being constantly put in the spotlight whenever it shone on him. He avoided plenty of social interaction deliberately, as he was so swarmed with expectations and being put on a pedestal that he just wanted to be left alone. Luckily enough, he was never bullied; however, nobody paid much attention to him either. He was believed to either be weird, or extremely pretentious. Jiro didn't care, as long as he was left alone.

However; after a harsh scolding from his parents one night for "getting behind", he snapped and opted to run away. Suffering a major panic attack during the Dark Hour, Jiro had attempted his life by jumping from the Moonlight Bridge. He was found by Rei Shimakage, who was sent out to scout activity in the area due to Mitsuru's readings. While she expected a Shadow, it was Jiro, about to jump. It was thanks to Rei's instinct that Jiro was saved, but because he was suffering a panic attack, his fight or flight reaction was triggered. Without an Evoker, he was able to summon Astraeus; however, in offense to Rei. Due to his instability, Rei easily defeated him and tranquilized him.

While he was returned home, it was only temporary that his parents treated him better. He was admitted into a hospital due to overexhaustion, and was in a two week long coma. In his short comatose state, the Kirijo Group took initiative to run tests on Jiro, and concluded that he needed stabilization procedures for his Persona, who only responds to severe fight or flight triggers. Mitsuru talked to Jiro that she knows what's going on with him, and that she can help. Seeing this as an opportunity to stay away from home, Jiro acceppted her offer without a second thought. He was given an Evoker then.

His parents very much refused to give him up, but was promised that Jiro would stay at the Gekkoukan Dorms as a special sponsorship and even lying that he was going to take an apprenticeship during his schooling. The only condition that his parents gave to the Kirijo was that they get a percentage of the money Jiro gets from selling his works. Little did they know it was for Jiro needing to be closely scrutinized by the Kirijo Group, as Astraeus refused to awaken even with the use of an Evoker.

In his head, Jiro retreated into himself, finally able to be complacent in his circumstances that he will have to hide from people. He deliberately isolated himself due to his mental and social condition, being forcefully isolated by his parents had caused him to be socially inept. Due to being surrounded by SEES members, they had become the only people he genuinely trusted, It was through interaction with them that Jiro accustomed himself to speaking and interaction, but outright refused to initiate anything with people outside of SEES.

Although fairly independent then, Jiro was still crippled by fear that his parents would come to get him back. So he painted, shelling out money so his parents wouldn't question the Kirijo. By Mitsuru's suggestion, he open an online shop wherein he could sell his work without his parents knowing. He immediately took to it, and earned an online presence in 2007. Whatever money he earned from there he kept to himself, but he had become so complacent in his circumstances that he remains detached from the world and from others. He suffered numeroud bouts of self-loathing for being such, but he had no means to really break away from his family. Even if they lived apart, he still felt controlled. Due to this, he resorted to self-harm in his bouts of anxiety, once again coming close to attempting his life had he not been found. His only solace in physically unleashing his frustration was during Dark Hour operations, but even then, with his already bad health, he was left in a state of constant fatigue and insomnia.

The Journey

By 2009, Jiro's Persona, Astraeus, had become fairly stable. However; there was still the trouble of being able to properly summon him or allow him to manifest. As a result of this, Jiro was put on hiatus and speical medication to force Astraeus out when useing the Evoker. While Jiro was supposed to rejoin SEES in May, there was a mishap with his stabilization procedures late the previous month, causing him to have to go through extra precautionary measures and be tightly observed for the next few weeks. As a result of this mishap, Jiro was required to take supporessors for Astraeus, but only for a temporary time until his next checkup. By late June, Jiro had finally been properly stabilized, already inclusive of test runs and clearances. He was then allowed back into SEES, and was introduced to the Protagonist and Junpei Iori. Jiro's ability to summon a Persona remained sotably stable throughout the main events.

While he was allowed in Tartarus explorations, Jiro was briefed about the events that had transpired in his absence. He was permitted to join on the July Full Moon Operation, despite Junpei and Yukari's protests that he was probably still unstable. At the aftermath of the month's operation, he was unsettled by a presence he sensed nearby. Due to his fatigue; however, he was unable to pinpoint who and where be felt the presence. He was shaken, but decided to ignore it, feeling it was just his own paranoia.

However; when SEES first met Strega in August, Jiro was alarmed that they gave the same energy he felt during th July Operation. He had immediately pointed out that they were Persona users, much to the disbelief of everyone else. Takaya commended him for his impressive senses, and complimented him that not a lot of people can tell others share their abilities. It is then revealed here that Jiro and Akihiko share the ability to sense Persona Users as well as pick out others who have The Potential; with the exception that Jiro's ability seemed to be stronger. Jiro is; however, intimidated by Strega, due to the fact he could sense that their Personas are unstable, a feeling he hoped was not the case.

On October 4th, Jiro was present with the rest of SEES as they tried to stop Ken from killing Shinjiro, only to see the latter shot to death by Takaya. Due to the situation, Jiro's fight or flight response was triggered again, Astraeus forcing himself out of Jiro's psyche. However, unlike the previous incidents, Jiro was able to tame his Persona despite the stress. Due to his grief, Jiro's energy levels pummeled, and so did his will to continue fighting. Like most of the original members of SEES, Jiro had lost an old friend and a close ally.

Social Link

Jiro's Social Link focuses on him trying to come to terms with his deliberate isolation as a reflexive response to stress and an "answer" to his problems. Jiro refuses to act on it due to his complacence in his situation and displays a certain fear of his own family throughout the S, Link.

As the S. Link progresses, Jiro begins to step back into the spotlight little by little, helping him deal with his social anxiety hands-on. Slowly, he begins to see that people are not so bad when he isn't being held at gunpoint to interact with them. [[ TBA ]]

By the end of the S. Link, Jiro has developed a courage within himself to be malcontent with how complacent he is and how he just let himself be ruled by fear for years. At the end of the S.Link, Jiro's parents demand he return home and give them an explanation as to why his activity has suddenly gone quiet. He snaps at his parents for the abuse they have done unto him for most of his life, and refuses to let up despite their attempts to dissociate with him with "I don't know you" or "We don't know you." Both parents refuse to acknowledge what they have done was abuse and thought they were just doing the best for him. Suffering a full blown breakdown, Jiro cusses them out and openly threatens them with legal action for child endangerment as long as he hadn't reached the age of 18 yet. He hung over their heads the fact that they tossed his own little brother aside the moment he was born, and didn't even properly and legally settle it. While he still struggles to be in the spotlight again, he thanks the Protagonist for being the one to push him to do so. He doesn't know where to start from there, but he does admit to having plenty of savings due to his earnings.

He is also a viable Romance Option for the Protagonist.

Portable

Jiro's role is reprised in P3P; though his personality was altered slightly when the player chooses to play as the Female Protagonist. Due to the Female Protagonist's seemingly set personality, Jiro is able to warm up to the latter far easier rather than be dismissive of her. However, unlike with the Male Protagonist, he does not allowe her into his room, opting to rather talk at the lounge outside the boys' ward. With the right choices in dialogue, Jiro's personality begins to break out of its shell far earlier in the game.

While he doesn't become fiercely protective of the Female Protagonist, he will finally allow her into his room when his S.Link reaches Lv. 9. He sees her a confidant and someone he could really trust, and she should be happy that he does feel that way, because he can never really trust others.

He is a Romance Option for the Female Protagonist as well.

The Answer

By the time the Gekkoukan Dorms were to close, Jiro was there, mostly at Mitsuru's behest. He was still grieving from what had just transpired, and was in no proper mental state to be there. On top of that, he had just moved out of his own home and had just begun settling into his new residence, sponsored by the Kirijo. With everyone else, he becomes trapped in the Abyss Of Time.

His past gets revealed briefly after Saburo's, showing that he was just made into a money making machine and never had the chance to simply live a life he could have had, There are snippets wherein he is shown inflicting self-harm due to his anxiety, and as painful as it is for everyone to watch, Jiro cannot deny it that it is just how he used to cope when art didn't do it for him. Lastly, he is shown at his first awakening, where Astraeus forced himself out due to a response trigger. Since then, Jiro realizes, that he had become far more stable since then.

Upon the defeat of SEES's manifested negative wills and collective desire to see the Protagonist one last time, Aigis realizes they have the ability to travel back to the time where the Protagonist seals Nyx. With Yukari lashing out at Aigis' indecision and towards Saburo out of jealousy, Jiro makes an attempt to hold Saburo back from doing more damage after backhanding the girl. While Saburo himself was quietly breaking down with his back turned, Jiro was there, fully understanding the grief shared by the rest of SEES. He spoke his mind about honoring the Protagonist's wishes, and differs with Yukari. He teams up then with Saburo.

After the defeat of Erebus, Jiro escapes with the rest from the Abyss Of Time.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

By this time, Jiro is a college student taking up Visual Communication in Art School and is preparing for his thesis year after the Operation at Inaba. Despite being in college, he is in Art School, giving him more time to be active within the Shadow Operatives, as well as holding an elite position of hiw own to carry out operations under Mitsuru's supervision. He arrives via car with his own team of operatives and meets up with his old teammates in Inaba.

Jiro's ability to sense Personas and Persona Users have since then sharpened, easily pointing out the Investigation Team as Persona users themselves. His honed skills enable him to pinpoint Yu Narukami as a Wild Card, suddenly becoming sullen when he remembers his old friend. When he meets the Investigation Team properly, he is alarmed to sense a presence similar to Laiko. The event naturally leaves him in a state of shock, most especially when he comes to realize that Zion Shirozaki, the brother Laiko had left behind, was a Persona User as well. Zion recognizes him along with the rest of the former SEES members as his late brother's old friends.

Jiro by this time is known nationwide as a National Artist; but even with his honorary title, still opted to go to Art School and was admitted with full scholarship, even though Mitsuru was willing to help shoulder the finances for him. It is revealed in bits of dialogue that he now shares an apartment with fellow Persona user, Fuuka Yamagishi, whom he had been pursuing a romantic relationship with for almost a year now.

Persona 5

By this time, Jiro has had the National Artist title for a few years now, enabling him to be a young acquaintance of Ichiryusai Madarame. He was present in Madarame's exhibit, mostly due to invitation. If Jiro had not been invited, he would not have went, as he can easily see that the works Madarame is displaying are not his own. He is recognized by press and he is asked some questions about Madarame. While he would have called Madarame out on somehow stealing works, he has no factual basis on his gut feelings, and simply gave a fake response as if he highly admired the artist. In the same exhibit, he is ran into by Nanami Kurokawa, whom he immediately felt was a Persona User, Shrugging it off, he decided to leave it be.

When Madarame confessed his crimes in his press conference, Jiro was beaming over the fact that his gut feeling proved right all along. He believed Madarame to be a sham, and got what he rightfully deserves. Up until August, Jiro's role has then been minimal. Throughout this time period, he can be seen as a customer in LeBlanc on occasion.

He resurfaces again after Futaba Sakura's Palace, mostly alarmed with the fact that his old friend Rei was able to reunite with her biological mother and her apparent half brother. When it dawns on him that Rei's biological family had the means to look into things like these, he asked her to extend a favor towards Masayuki Azai, Rei's half brother, to look into something for him. Needless to say, even after all these years, Jiro never gave up in looking for his brother, but didn't know where to start.

Evidence leads to Nanami Kurokawa, whom Jiro recognized as the boy who bumped into him at Madarame's exhibit. It was a clearly rocky start, as Jiro has never even met Nanami before, and the latter was uncomfortable with the thought of meeting his biological family. Jiro didn't particularly force Nanami to stay with him, but he extended the gesture that he was beyond happy and elated to have finally met his brother after 15 years. He was open to Nanami visting him and talking to him whenever, but understood if the latter would outright refuse to do so.

[[ TBA but in the end he gets shared custody of Nanami, who stays with him on the weekends! ]]

Additionally, Jiro is trying to keep a low profile as far as the Kirijo Group is concerned. His connections to Mitsuru Kirijo and her Shadow Operative business has gotten him on the hit list of National Security, seeing as he is heavily scrutinized even in his own exhibits.

Gameplay

Party Member

Jiro's skills are heavily Almighty and Ailment Skills. His secondary skills are single party member healing skills such as Diarahan. His only elemental weakness is that of Light despite his main skills being Almighty. His weakness to Light Based Skills render him vulnerable to one hit-kills such as Hama. Without the help of Light-Resistant accessories, Jiro will require the help of revival items and skills.

When Astraeus evolved into Kothar-wa-Khasis, Jiro's attributes change. Jiro will be able to Block Darkness as well as Nullify all stat ailments with the exception of the damage dealt by specific skills such as Virus Breath. He retains his weakness to Light and as mentioned before, without Light-resistant accessories, Jiro will still remain vulnerable to one-hit kills.

Jiro has a fairly good HP and SP ratio even as he rejoins SEES. His SP far exceeds his HP meter due to being exclusively magic-inclined with no Physical Skills. He has a fair chance at getting Critical Hits but has low Agility, making him also vulnerable to getting hit with a Critical. Jiro has low Endurance against Physical Skills, but has very high Endurance against Magic Skills.

Trivia

  • Jiro's parents, due to their treatment of him throughout his life, appear to display some degree of Narcissistic Parenting. It is later revealed in dialogue of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax that Jiro's parents have tried coaxing him back, and blowing up when he completely cut them off from his life.
  • He has a running gag of getting high off of paint fumes. He does not do this on purpose, but he is often victim to this due to lack of proper ventilation to air out the paint fumes in his room. So far, he has not exhibited any signs of Huffing or Inhalant Abuse.
  • Jiro likes to paint in two kinds of settings: Silence and Blasting Music. Jiro's music taste is rather varied, as he simply likes to have something loud enough to drown out outside noises.
  • While Jiro can actually draw still life, figure drawing and all the like, his style is mostly on Expressionism that later evolved into his own form of Superflat. The mix of both have led Jiro to enjoy doing installations and murals upon commission.
  • Interestingly enough, Jiro is seemingly the only natural Persona user in SEES that requires Persona stabilization procedures for artificial Persona users due to having a "Timid" Persona; as compared to Shinjiro Aragaki's Castor, who went berserk.
  • Some dialogue in Persona 3 hint at Jiro and Laiko Shirozaki being exes, which is then later confirmed if the Player talks to the Senior Year Male SEES members at the night of September 29.
  • Jiro is usually in his own little world in his head, but when he pays attention to something, he picks up even the tiniest details and can remember even the most minor things in a coversation.
  • It's very easy to find Jiro with Saburo Maeda and Kyo Sawamura in pachinko parlors after school. He can also be found with Laiko at Chagall Cafe.
  • When the seniors go drinking at the Karaoke Bar, Jiro is more often than not always the first to get drunk. While drunk, Jiro becomes incredibly sarcastic and verbal, shedding off every bit of meekness his otherwise sober self displays.
  • He admits one time to spending much of his money on a high-performance laptop and a very expensive tablet just so he could do digital art. By Persona 5 he has gone through a number of CINTIQs already.
  • Jiro is alarmingly very organized and tidy, despite looking very disheveled on a daily basis. Even his painting supplies are thoroughly cleaned.
  • Though he has a lot of money he saved for himself, the only expensive clothing he buys for himself are shoes. Everything else he thrifts.
  • Even if he and Laiko are exes, it's not uncommon to find them sleeping in each other's rooms. Mostly it would be Jiro in Laiko's room if anything. Laiko knows that Jiro's room is mostly off-limits.
  • With his use of boomerangs, Jiro's ability to use projectile weapons is actually considered to be of decent skill level. While not as skilled as Rei in the slightest, Jiro is able to be a good shot with throwing knives if he tried.
