Prince Fafnir was born to Nicholas and Evelyn Amberdane. His mother died when he was still young due to an unknown illness. He grew up under pressure with the progressing war between Whiteridge and Silvane, believing it to be useless when they could instead work together. This eventually pushed his father too far, leading to his attempted murder at 14 years old. He was saved by an old woman named Rosemary in the woods and was taken in and raised by her.

At 15, he made his way back to Silvane with the goal of persuading people to leave the town and come with him. Among them was Violet, a young farm girl who was eager to run away with him and quickly joined the newly formed King's Watch, leading her family to believe she had been kidnapped. Now calling himself Ruby, he ruled his village hidden in the cover of the forest outside Silvane. He married Violet, who bore him a daughter named Butterfly, and led the quickly growing town neighboring Silvane.

However, due to the near global control split between Whiteridge and Silvane, Ruby found himself as the third signficantly weaker party in the war and an unstable Nicholas led a siege on King's Watch, slaughtering the entire village, including Ruby and his wife. The only survivor was their daughter, who went on to become the queen of Silvane (aptly renamed Evelyn) after Nicholas' imprisonment.
