Overview

Jeongmin is a former deputy detective from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. He was recruited into the Alliance following a chance encounter with Taejun Baek in Seoul where Taejun found that his errant familiar, the haetae, favored Jeongmin for his passion for justice and due process. Though he is from Korea, he is an ethnically Chinese orphan who was adopted by an elderly (also hwagyo) mother in his early teens and speaks fluent Chinese and Korean.

Jeongmin is an intelligent and dedicated investigator who has an eye for detail and a naturally good sense of intuition. He is a practitioner of taijiquan, particularly the taiji jian, the variant that emphasizes bladework. Since joining Alliance 0, he’s been training hard to bring himself up to combat level. He has declined to train his aura but has instead been training qi manipulation.

Jeongmin is quite outgoing and friendly. He has a natural charm that endears him to others who interact with him. He is a chatterbox who is a bit impatient with silences, and finds them awkward (unless everyone is busy working!). Despite being outgoing and talkative, he has a certain humble timidness and is hesitant at being put at the center of attention.

Jeongmin speaks politely and intellectually, and thoroughly enjoys intellectual and philosophical discourse. He has a very strict adherence to a perception of morality and law that he does not tolerate deviances to. It's quite difficult to convince him to change his moral stance on something, but he is more willing to listen to anothers' perspective if they can justify it in a rational and calm manner.

Though he has an open and polite exterior, Jeongmin has a hot tempered passion that can easily be invoked. Unexpectedly, Jeongmin is incredibly stubborn. He is a champion grudge holder, and finds it hard to forgive people who have crossed him. He often vents his frustrations on a subject in long-winded and passionate monologues, sometimes with very little warning after being triggered. He often ovethinks this personal angst and causes himself much internal and unneccesary stress.

Seoul Metropolitan Police

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency is one of 18 divisions in the Korean National Police Agency, which is run under the Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety. To become an officer in the KNPA, one must pass the police recruitment exam, which is held once a year and has three portions: written, practical, and interview. Graduates of the National Police University automatically enter the police force at a level 6 lieutenant, and enrollment to the academy is as competitive as a top tier university. Within the KNPA there are 8 bureaus: Public Safety, Criminal Investigations, Cyber, Traffic, Public Security, Intelligence, National Security, and Foreign Affairs. There are a total of 11 ranks and 9 level, with the highest rank being the Commissioner General.

Korean police officers are trained in gyeongchalmudo, aka Police Martial Arts, which is utiliczes techniques from taekwondo, hapkido, gumdo, jiu-jitsu, MMA, and boxing. The Police Martial Arts have an emphasis on self-defense and arrest techniques. Prospective officers are trained by instructors from the Department of Martialism. Officers are also trained in the usage of firearms, and are permitted to carry 38-caliber pistols during operations.

The special forces unit of the KNPA is called the Special Operations Unit, and their main mission is counter-terrorism, but also reinforces other high risk arrests, rescues, and interventions. Within the Seoul Division, there are 4 SOU squads.

Martial Art: Taijiquan

Jeongmin was taught taijiquan by his adoptive mother to exercise and meditate. He quickly took to this hobby, and began practicing the blade form of taijiquan. Though he practiced it recreationally, due to his former profession and training as a police detetice, he is able to utilize the martial art with intent for both defense and offense.

Due to being a taijiquan practioner, Jeongmin is quite aware of his physical body. He practices it whenever possible, exercisingly lightly with a few form flows on work breaks to stretch his muscles and relax his mind. His awareness of his physique makes him an agile and surefooted martial artist.

Qi Manipulation

Prior to joining the Alliance, Jeongmin mostly believed external qi manipulation was largely superstition. Under the tutelage Taoist Zhongyu Shi, Jeongmin has started to train both his internal and external qi manipulation instead of aura.

Perhaps due to his background as a taijiquan martial artist, he has picked up the skill of qi manipulation quite quickly. In particular, Jeongmin has shown good aptitude for external qi manipulation due to his high attunement to the Heaven hexagram of the Bagua. He has already demonstrated an ability to redirect magical/elemental attacks directed at him by incorporating external qi manipulation into taiji forms.

Detective

Jeongmin is a graduate of the National Police University in Korea and former inspector-level police detective for the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. He served in the Force for two years before he was recruited to the Alliance and has professional experience with criminal investigations.

Jeongmin is a passionate and relentless detective whose skills distinguished him from his peers. He is highly observant and has an excellent memory for details. As an inspector, he has held leadership positions in investigation teams, and understands the process of inquiry tasks. Jeongmin excels at interrogations and information extraction; his naturally open and trustworthy exterior lulls others into speaking freely with him.

HISTORY///

Jeongmin does not remember much of his early childhood, which has been attributed to the trauma of losing his parents in a car accident. All that is known of Jeongmin's parents were that at least one of them was ethnically Chinese, thereby making Jeongmin a hwagyo. Jeongmin spent most of his early childhood in an orphange before he eventually met Jo-Ryeo Lee, a late middle aged teacher who had started to volunteer at the orphange. After some time, late middle aged woman decided to adopt Jeongmin as her son when he was twelve years old.

Jo-Ryeo was also ethnically Chinese, spoke primarily Chinese, and encouraged Jeongmin to as well. Jo-Ryeo nurtured Jeongmin's sense of his Chinese heritage as her household was more culturally Chinese than Korean. Despite growing up in Korea, Jeongmin identifies more strongly with his ethnically Chinese half due to his upbringing under Jo-Ryeo. He is devoted to his mother Jo-Ryeo, who never married or had children of her own. Despite her career as a teacher, Jo-Ryeo was well off due to an ample inheritance, and she and Jeongmin lived comfortably with even a few extravagances from time to time.

One of Jeongmin's only memories (albeit fragmented still) from his childhood are of a pair of police officers who helped him after the car accident. These officers, whose names Jeongmin cannot remember, inspired Jeongmin to pursue a career in the police force. In his teenage years, Jeongmin was addicted to reading crime novels, and decided that he wanted to become a detective.

Jeongmin set his sights on getting into the highly selective National Police Academy, whose competitiveness is comparable to top universities in Korea. Jeongmin was an excellent student in school, and under Jo-Ryeo's request, had skipped several grades in the academy she enrolled him in. Through hard work and dedication, he was able to pass the competitive entrance exam to the National Police Academy.

Upon graduation, he was appointed as a Level 6 Officer (as is standard) and gained the rank of Inspector. Having distinguished himself in this field of study, Jeongmin was assigned into the Bureau of Criminal Investigations as a detective. He served in the Seoul Metropolitain Police Agency for two years in various investigation teams. Jeongmin distinguished himself well due to his relentless and meticulous pursuit of case closure, and was well on his way to another formal promotion when he was recruited into the Alliance by Taejun Baek after a chance encounter.

Taejun Baek, the Corren League Leader, recruited Jeongmin into the Alliance after a personal trip he took to Seoul to find his errant familiar, the haetae. In his talk with the haetae, Taejun found that the haetae had a special interest in the young detective. This surprised Taejun, who was well aware of the haetae's pickiness, and he reached out to Jeongmin to recruit him into the Alliance to keep a closer eye on him.

Jeongmin was initially a little hestitant. Like many others in law enforcement, he was quite wary of the unregulated globally scoped Alliance 0, an organsation that had only emerged relatively recently and disclosed to the world the nature of its operations. However, he was taken in by Taejun's explanation that within the Alliance, he would have opportunity to work on cases on a global scale without the interference of beauracy.

Taejun personally oversaw Jeongmin's orientation into the Alliance, and assessed his capabilites to sort him into a Division. In the combat assessment, Taejun found that Jeongmin was a capable martial artist, but Jeongmin was disconcerted by Taejun's demonstration of aura. Jeongmin declined to train aura manipulation and was subsequently placed into Dispatch due to his specialisation in investigations. Though Taejun did not expect Jeongmin to develop martially to a high standard without it, stubborn Jeongmin constantly petitioned him to allow him to work the hardest (but most dangerous) cases.

Taejun eventually got Jeongmin to agree to a compromise: if he wanted to work the high profile cases, he needed to improve his combat abilities. Most recently, Taejun assigned him to train qi manipulation under the Taoist exorcist Zhongyu Shi.

It is rare for Taejun to personally recruit someone for the Alliance, so Jeongmin's recruitment naturally sparked a great deal of interest in curiosity in his peers. Jeongmin feels the pressure to live up to standards, and he dislikes when people comment on him being recruited by Taejun.

Culebron Case [Barcelona] - Jeongmin was assigned to assist Deiji Kim's investigation to determine the thief Culebron's identity. Deiji's investigation had already picked up on Barcelona being the most likely base of operations for the Culebron. The two travelled to Barcelona to gather information from the Barcelona-based criminal broker Dario. They disguised themselves as the Mist Dragon and an associate, and convinced Dario that they were looking for an associate for a difficult upcoming operation. Dario confirmed that the Culebron was in fact based in Barcelona, and Deiji gave him a card with a tracker implanted to give to the Culebron. A few days later, Dario gave the card to the Culebron in a meeting. Though the Culebron discarded the card no long after, Deiji and Jeongmin were able to pull CCTV imagery from the surroundings to identify a few suspects matching the Culebron's general description. After a few days of surveillance, the pair tracked one of their suspects making her way to Dario's broker den, and identified Lucia Aguilar, a local dance instructor with a minor criminal record, as the most likely identity of the Culebron.

Steven Nevets Case [Interview] - A fellow Dispatch agent asked Jeongmin to take a crack at recently apprehended POI Steven Nevets, who had been refusing to give an interview. Though initially Jeongmin was also unsuccessful speaking with him, it was a late night, and unbeknownst to Jeongmin, a full moon night. Steven transformed into a werewolf and attacked Jeongmin, injuring him. He might have killed Jeongmin if not for the interference of agent KOGARASHI, who blasted through the panic lock and subdued Steven with a high voltage beam and silver cordage. When Steven regained consciousness, he revealed that his real name was Vincent Lockier of the infamous but reclusive Lockier pack.

After this event, Vincent refused to speak with any other Alliance agent other than Jeongmin, but to Jeongmin, he answered any question willingly. Vincent's interview lead to the discovery of many leads in the Black Market, many of which becamse particular high interest cases for the Alliance due to the supernaturals involved.

Daseot Case [Hangzhou] - Jiyoo Myung, formerly incarcerated, was given the opportunity to aid the Alliance on a mission to apprehend the Mist Dragon. Jiyoo, Jeongmin Kang, and Jaehyun Baek were sent to Hangzhou to stake out an event showcasing an artifact believed to be the legendary Zhang Zhiya's sword. Though Jiyoo was only supposed to have supportive role during the mission, ultimately he was instrumental in stopping the Mist Dragon's escape after she initially overpowered Jaehyun and Jeongmin.

Madre AraÑa [Mexico City] - After Minxiu Fei revealed her adoptive mother was an immortal, the Alliance deemed it important to investigate and find her. Espionage specialist Vivienne Russell and investigations specialist Jeongmin Kang were paired up to search Mexico City for any leads to her or her gang's, Los Guardianes del Sur, whereabouts. The agents were fortunate enough to stumble across a lead into a major Black Market event being hosted by a foreign interest, the Asia based HY Group.

Posing as ambassadors from the HY Group, Vivienne and Jeongmin were able to approach another prominent gang in Mexico City, the Rivera gang, to ask information about the Guardianes. The perceptive agents noticed their meeting being eavesdropped upon, and surmised it was a spy from the Guardianes. They were able to feed the information about the Black Market event to the spy, who did end up being from the Guardianes. In doing so, they were able to lure out the Guardianes and set up the Alliance for a double bust to both stop the Black Market event and also detain major Mexicon POIs such as the Madre Araña.

Corren League Leader

Taejun recruited Jeongmin into the Alliance after finding out that his familiar, the judicial haetae, favored Jeongmin. Because of this connection, Taejun is very curious about Jeongmin. Taejun respects Jeongmin's incorruptible sense of justice, but has been working to redefine passionate Jeongmin's ironclad values. Jeongmin is eager to prove himself to Taejun, whom he both admires and respects. He's unafraid of petitioning the League Leader to give him harder work, which sometimes annoys Taejun.

After Jeongmin accepted a mission assigned to him by Jun while Taejun was taking a leave of absence, the detective has fallen out of favor with Taejun.

Sorcery Faction

Zhongyu has been teaching Jeongmin qigong techniques. Jeongmin has a submissive nature and light-heartedly mitigates Zhongyu's occasional grumpy remarks easily, so the two get along well so far. They regularly discuss the philosophy of ethics and the natural world during their trainings. Zhongyu has come to know Jeongmin quite well after Jeongmin was sent to the Shi Estate for insubordination. Jeongmin is grateful to Zhongyu for helping him refocus and treats him with the utmost respect, which the egotistical Zhongyu thrives on.

Earth Faction Chief

Zhongyu introduced Rei to Jeongmin to have her spar with him and train his martial prowess. Jeongmin's abilities surprised her, and when she used her elemental lightning on him, Jeongmin manifested the ability to redirect magic with qi for the first time. They have since spent plenty of time sparring and training with each other, and have built up a friendly camaderie. Jeongmin has a bit of a secret, one-sided crush on the spirited, confident Rei.

Sorcery Faction

Before Rei, Hanya was Jeongmin's primary sparring partner at the Shi Estate. Jeongmin is very interested in Hanya's yao nature. Though Hanya does not talk much, Jeongmin never stopped trying to chat with him. Eventually, Jeongmin got Hanya to open up to him a little, and through Hanya, Jeongmin has learned much about the yao. Though Hanya treats Jeongmin with the same aloof, sardonic air as he does to anyone else, Hanya is just as fond of Jeongmin as his master is.

Dispatch Investigator

Jeongmin was assigned to assist Deiji in investigating Culebron's identity. The two have a very good matched skillset and worked very well together on their first investigative mission. Their budding friendship has a strong basis of mutual respect. Jeongmin admires Deiji's abilities and doesn't mind leading the conversation, but happily defers to Deiji's experience.

Cybercriminal

Jeongmin had almost begun to trust Jiyoo, but after Taejun reprimanded him for insubordination in working with Jiyoo, he has gone back to distrusting Jiyoo, and has developed a misguided grudge against him. With Jeongmin's nature, it seems it will be difficult for Jiyoo and Jeongmin to reconcile, even though they worked together well on the mission.

Black Market Dealer

Ever since their encounter, Vincent has taken an odd liking to Jeongmin, who definitely doeesn't feel the same way. Vincent liked Jeongmin's determination and was touched that Jeongmin treated him respectfully and with empathy. Jeongmin only did so because he was trying to get Vincent to testify and he is able to hide his distaaste for criminals well. Whatever the case, Vincent refuses to speak to any agent other than Jeongmin at the Alliance.
