The prime exemple of why it's not that easy to be an Inter-Dimensional Being...
Marine's story in short:

Why does Marine have Amnesia? And why her head is deformed like that? Because Inter-Dimensional Beings are dead people, souls without a body, and without a body you don't have the chemical reaction that drive you to be sad or happy, nor the ones to retain the memory...
Fortunately, a soul still remembers who they were and act like the living person they was, because the soul was shaped by their former body. So what's the problem with Marine? She was lost, and remained alone for too long...
An Inter-Dimensional Being that remains alone for too long forget who they were, little by little, they forget their past, their appearance, their personality... Until they are just a blank soul that derive in the universe, we call them "Inter-Dimensional Ghost"
Marine is not one yet, she was saved by Lois by luck, and now Lois do everything she can to take care of Marine, to try to cure her Amnesia. But you can't cure Amnesia from an Inter-Dimensional Being, all she can do is avoid more memory loss.
Lois never leaves Marine alone, not only because she is very altruistic, but also because she sees in Marine the daughter Lois was never able to raise, as the same man she loved was the same man who strangled her until her neck snapped.
