Story
In search of legs
Boracite was born one winter without legs. They were discovered by the current icebreaker, a gem called Algodonite, who taught Boracite everything they knew and spent much time trying to locate a pair of legs. Years passed and no suitable material could be found.
Algodonite had inclusions in their hair, an anomalous trait. They offered to use their hair to build a pair of legs for Boracite. To their surprise, it worked and Boracite joined Algodonite in breaking the ice each winter. One day, Boracite's new legs suddenly stopped functioning and they had to leave the job, leaving Algodonite back to working alone. They were taken a few years later.
Average days
Boracite has spent their entire life in search of a pair of legs that they either won't lose in some absurd way (examples being taken to the moon, eaten by snails, crushed by ice floes, catching fire, and so on) or that their inclusions will adapt to at all. The current consensus is that the arsenic that made up Algodonite's body weakened the inclusions in their lower body, effectively poisoning them.
They'd gotten used to an on/off work schedule depending on whether or not they have legs. This frustrates them, not being able to work, but they've more or less accepted it. When they can't work, they help out with repairs or paperwork.
A new home
It was an average day doing winter work when Boracite found two unfamiliar gems stealing glue from the supplies storage. Both angry and a little curious, they chased the pair all the way across the ocean, day and night, to a tiny volcanic island. They found that it was home to several gems thought to be on the moon. Not knowing the way back, they decided to stick around.
Boracite is assumed to be on the moon these days, but they do enjoy their new way of life which is more or less the same. They're still the icebreaker, and they still have problems finding a good pair of legs. There just happens to be a volcano and way less gems around them this time, and less attacks from the moon.
