Iris has not had an easy life. If you were to ask them now, they'd be scarce on details, but you can figure a few things out.
They grew up poor, and it's unclear what their familial situation even was besides "bad". A typical troubled kid, poor grades, fights and shoplifting. They had a record before age 10, easy. But, they had close-knit group of friends, at least back then. All better off than them, but kids don't naturally discriminate.

Together they formed an internet prank channel, as was the style at the time. It was fun, until it wasn't. While it may have kept them out of trouble initially, the climate of such content leads only to escalation, and new trouble.

Something went horribly wrong, and when authorities pinned the blame on them as the obvious ringleader, none of their friends spoke up to shift the blame away. The severity of the property damage combined with their previous criminal records landed them in juvenile detention for years, and, after that, they had nowhere to go. They survived on their own, taking odd jobs and sleeping rough, until they fell in with the Palsgrave, working as hired muscle. They were housed and fed, and made enough to get by. They have earned Iris' loyalty.

With a generally thorny attitude, they make a perfect enforcer. Perhaps a touch too quick to anger, but they are more than large enough now to back up their aggression. It's a dog eat dog world out there, and you can't make it out there with any less.
