PERSONALITY

When he was Yanzhi, God of Stone, he was mellow both towards fellow gods and citizens. He got along well with other gods under the Earth domain and others overseeing nature-related domains. Despite his mostly peaceful attitude, he will still be the first to take charge when issues start to arise. He wants to keep the world stable and running as it always has been, even if it means sacrificing his own safety.

After leading the fight against the previous Earthkeeper's corruption, he was appointed as the new Earthkeeper and donned a new name, Chengyu. As the new God of Earth, his workload to manage the surface domains increased to the point where he could no longer afford to be as nonchalant as when he was the God of Stone. He became much more cold and hardened in attitude, partly due to his need to be taken seriously as the newest member and leader of the Shanjin Pantheon. He is much more uptight even in casual interaction, unless he is with his only remaining close friend, Huicha.

In his human disguise, he is able to return to a more relaxed attitude, now being free of his responsibilities. However, unlike before, he is incredibly secretive of anything pertaining to his identity or true goals. Still, he can let loose a bit more and joke with his traveling companions. He does have a bit of a mean streak with his two companions Kejian and Huilin, but he doesn't realize it's due to the fact that he holds affection for both of them, as much as he likes to claim he does it purely to antagonize Kejian.

TRIVIA
  • His character idea was conceived after I went on a long rant about fandom mistreatment of Zhongli and how he needed to be saved from his source media (i've never played genshin in my life)
  • Feng'An (峰暗) means "mountain's shadow", Yanzhi (岩治) means "peaceful stone", and Chengyu (乘于) means "full authority".
  • A god with social anxiety? More likely than you think!
  • He had very little close friends as a god due to the vastness of his domain, only remaining close with Huicha. He grew even more distant from acquaintances after becoming the new Earthkeeper.
  • He rarely ever gets angry, usually responding to situations with apology or escaping entirely.
  • A god with impostor syndrome? Also more likely than you think!
  • He keeps his Stone of Divinity in his pocket, which is how he got pickpocketed by Kejian so easily.

STORY

Gods are formed through belief of mortals. Whenever there is appreciation or need for something, there will be a god to oversee it. As the world advances, more and more gods are formed to properly manage matters spanning from the earth, mind, life, and more.

Yanzhi was formed thousands of years ago, after the first Calamity, to watch over stone. He oversaw rock formations, caves, riverbeds, and everything in relation to his godly title. He mingled with other gods under the Earth domain, especially with Huicha, the Godess of Waterfalls.

The former Earthkeeper's corruption

One day, the Earth suddenly became unstable. Being the God of Stone, Yanzhi was among the first to realize this disturbance and inspect the issue. He ended up finding signs of corruption spreading slowly through the land, and furthermore, the God of Earth was not answering any calls. He then rounded up the other gods under the domain to confront the God of Earth, in which they discovered the Calamity taking over her body.

Yanzhi led the battle against the God of Earth, suffering damage to his leg in the process. After working with the Pantheon to seal her away, Yanzhi was then offered a position among the other domain gods to replace the Earthkeeper position. Unable to refuse, he accepted the role, and has been the current Earthkeeper since.

As the new Earthkeeper

Upon taking the Earthkeeper role, he had to change his name to reflect his new title. Yanzhi became Chengyu, shedding away his title as God of Stone. Now with more godly responsibilities, Chengyu also had less time to spend with other gods or vising the mortal realm. He grew distant from most of his friends, all except for Huicha, who made sure to visit him regularly.

He always pushed himself to take care of everything related to the Earth, afraid that the other members of the Pantheon may not take him seriously as a younger god. He was always working, managing everything he could, unknowingly spiraling down the same path of self-destruction the old Earthkeeper took.

Retreating to the mortal world

A thousand years later, minor gods suddenly begin vanishing. Chengyu pleads the Pantheon to respond to the issue, but none of them are quite motivated to, seemingly terrified. Unable to take care of the mass extinction himself, Chengyu grows more and more stressed at his lack of power, which is only made worse by the increasingly angered mortal response to his inaction.

Finally, Chengyu cracks under the pressure and leaves the godly world, forming a disguise in the mortal realm. He dons the name Yi Feng'An to blend in and spends two months living as a mortal before learning Huicha has also gone missing.

Determined to find Huicha, Feng'An embarks on a journey to hunt down clues as to the gods' disappearance. On the way, he meets Huilin, Kejian, and other intruiguing characters who assist him on the hunt.

The unexpected solution

Through their search, the group discovers the true cause of the disappearance was because of the Calamity's resurgence under a controlled vessel. They learned from Mingwu, the Goddess of Death, that a priest named Qizhen released the Calamity once more to make the upper pantheon listen to his demands. The group attempts to stop him, but they quickly find out that he has become the new vessel for the Calamity and can't be stopped with their forces alone. In short, they get their asses kicked.

Feng'An then realizes that as the Earthkeeper, he has the power to bring this revelation to light and push back against the physical manifestation of the corruption once more. He finally takes his godly form again to expose Qizhen's plans, and with help from the gods and mortals combined, they seal the Calamity once more. Qizhen is defeated, and all the missing gods return, including Shirang.

With the old Earthkeeper back, Feng'An retakes his identity of Yanzhi, the god of Stone. He now spends more time with the other gods and in the mortal realm. Thus, peace on earth is restored, and awareness of the Calamity's true power will render it useless for generations to come..

RELATIONSHIPS
huicha-icon.png
Huicha
[best friends]

From the very beginning, stone and waterfalls were intertwined. Yanzhi and Huicha were closest friends for thousands of years, through the changing tides of earth and humanity's progression. Even after Yanzhi became the new God of Earth, Huicha continued to visit him and make sure he was okay. Thus, when she went missing, that sparked him to instantly go searching...

shirang-icon.png
Shirang
[domain leader]

During his time as the God of Stone, Yanzhi looked up to Shirang. He respected the God of Earth greatly and always kept a lookout for anything he could help with to make the Earthkeeper's job easier. Shirang was always kind and protective of every domain, which was why it was so strange when she was suddenly corrupted...

huilin-mugshot-blank.png
Xi Huilin
[friends/party member]

Feng'An met Huilin randomly at a restaurant one day, where he asked if she knew anything of the Waterfall Goddess's wherabouts. She joined his adventure due to her own curiosity of her missing memories and has gotten along well ever since. Feng'An enjoys her presence, reminiscent of his time with Huicha. He tries to win her favor during banters with Kejian, in which he almost always wins due to his general demeanor and Huilin picking sides based on whatever's funniest. He can't put his finger on it, but there is also just something about Huilin that is very familiar.

kejian-mugshot-blank.png
Kong Kejian
[friends/party member]

These two first met when Kejian attempted to pickpocket Feng'An on the streets. Kejian stole Feng'An's Stone of Divinity and recognized the symbol embedded into it, which led him to become suspicious of Feng'An's godhood. He joined the party to search for his own missing patron, believing the God of Earth should be doing more than just searching for his one friend and work towards finding all the missing gods. When together, Feng'An and Kejian always tease the other. Kejian brings out Feng'An's more sassy side with insults as they try to fight over Huilin's favor during arguments. Feng'An won't admit it, but he has become quite fond of the kid.

neyo-mugshot.png
Neyo Ciliano
[friends]

The group meets Neyo right as they were visiting Shanjin to research the gods' disappearance. Feng'An finds the historian's general research to be fascinating and is especially interested in their findings related to geography. However, as Neyo reveals their findings about the god extinctions, Feng'An slowly realizes there is more happening at the base of the disaster. This is what ultimately leads the group to finding the true reason behind the disappearances, and Neyo is also able to return to their own country to spread the discovery.
