Though often called simply Caecilia or Caecil, as nobody knows much about them other than the fact they came from Caecilia, and that's usually the only info they're willing disclose to anyone. As the only hint most have of their identity, it stuck around as a nickname. Grier, already a rare name, retains its obscurity as its only used by those closest to them in more private scenarios.

As a child, they volunteered to an experiment which would replace their lost arm and leg with one of demonic flesh, which became more of a parasite and very slowly began to spread through the rest of their body, converting the human cells into infernal ones. And so, through the years, they sought hints of necromancy in unproperly censored tomes, purely with the intent to keep it in check as it technically remained organic matter foreign to their own body and belonging to a dead being. But even after learning enough of the basics to halt the gangreen-esque process, their curiosity continued to expand at an exponential rate.
Soon enough, they began to break into exclusive libraries in search of further arcane material, and while they enjoyed quite a success, keeping items of interest and selling the rest, they were eventually caught by an undercover guard after the city of Caecilia took notice of the alarming rate at which their books disappeared. Then thrown in jail, they awaited as their true sentence was to be carried out. Their eyes were to be gouged out, as to never be able to read a single scripture again. After the brutal public display of the state's violence, they stumbled into a dark alley away from the witnesses. There, they attempted to use their already earned knowledge to replace their lost sight, aiming to shift the cancerous demonic into a serviceable substitute, but the kind of anatomy required for an eye simply wasn't compatible. As a last resort, they replaced their sense of vision entirely, opting for a new pair of eardrums to elevate their hearing instead, fitted to their emptied sockets.

Now wandering through the land far away from the city taken as their name, they seek little more than further research into the dark arts, albeit, much to their dismay, they still require the aid of others to find forbidden tomes.
