Jay spent a lot of his former years indoors, mostly sheltered and shut in from the outside world. One way he would often pass time was to teach himself about anything and everything he could (as long as there was enough information available to him). Because of this, he is well-read on a lot of various topics. If he finds something even mildly interesting, he dedicates hours reading into it and trying to gain an understanding of that thing, even if he doesn't gain any practical experience.

Although his intelligence and knowledge is quite impressive for his age, his lack of real world experience leads him to be quite naive and easily trusting of the world around him and the people he encounters. Though he has always read about the world below, his read knowledge could never truly prepare him for life in Aemari. He often finds himself underestimating how hard some things can be, or will sometimes walk into dangerous situations simply because he is unaware of how dangerous they actually are. He will often take people's word at face value, because he believes people have good intentions more often than not, he will trust whatever he is told without many follow up questions. This belief is also what leads him to being quite honest and upfront about his own feelings aswell. Infact, he almost finds it impossible to lie.

Jay is overall a very nervous fox. He tends to be highly anxious and will worry just about anything and everything. He is easy and quick to startle, and can become upset quite easily. Unconfident in his own judgement, he will often second guess his own thoughts and decisions. Unfortunately this doesn't play well into his willingness to trust others, as the doubt in his own judgement leads him to be easily swayed by the words of others.

Jay is also fairly clumsy, despite his work requiring a lot of precision most of the time, he will accidentally knock over or bump things in his way. Sometimes his anxious overthinking only makes this worse, as he becomes so focused on trying to avoid one bad outcome, that he becomes neglectful of his surroundings and the other possible outcomes of a particular situation.

Jay began learning how to fix and repair machines from a young age after Joyce had brought him under his wing. During their time together, Joyce tried to pass on all that he could. Jay's natural curiosity and interest in figuring out how these mechanical constructions worked gave him a lot of motivation to continue trying to learn and discover how they were put together. He'd often take machines and contraptions apart just to see how they work inside, before putting them back together.

When Joyce was exiled from Chaunmire, the workshop was left in Jay's care. Since then he has continued running the shop under Velloria, and eventually Corey's, supervision. He will mostly be assigned work directly from those working under Velloria and her administration. Other times though, he happily accepts work brought to him by those in his area for free, finding enjoyment in being able to fix things for those in his community without the usual pressure of meeting the high expectations of Velloria's operations.

Unfortunately, with the rest of Aemari not being very technologically advanced like Chaunmire was, Jay found his skills had less use now that he was living on the Plateau. He still tries to keep up his skills despite this, as he often goes out to scavenge any pieces among the wreckages of Chaunmire that he can use to build little contraptions.
