Rex and her two siblings, Max and Lux are born into the same dog village as Jem. Rex is training to be a guard and a peacekeeper, but dreams of adventures and becoming a hero. So, one day she and her friend (who is nobility and perfect, ©laika) leave their home and join an expedition to become real heroes.

The Expedition's purpose is to find a way to stop horrible Sun Storms that plague the world they're living in, or at least a way to counter the side effects that being in a Storm has. One of the symptoms is losing one's memory and that's what happens to Rex when the Expedition gets caught in a particularly bad Sun Storm.

The only thing Rex remembers afterwards is their name, that the Expedition has some greater purpose, and one of the members of the Expedition - a brown dog that seems to know her. That of course is her noble friend, but all Rex knows is that the Brown Dog is important and she needs to be with her.

The Expedition, or what little there's left of it, struggles to reach their goal - the top of a mountain where there's said to be growing a plant, the Moon Herb, that could help. Not that Rex really knows what they are doing, she's confused, doesn't get along with most of the dogs and wolves she's travelling with, and is mostly just concerned about an orphaned wolf puppy (©majelia) the Expedition picks up on their way - a puppy that they then leave behind to live with a wolf pack living in the mountain.

The Expedition reaches their goal and finds... absolutely nothing. The whole area where the magical plant was supposed to grow is just gone, fallen into the sea. But as Rex still doesn't really get what they're even doing there, she thinks the others just give up for no reason. On their way back the Expedition gets caught in another Sunstrom, but find a refuge in the shelter of the mountain's wolf pack. There Rex briefly reunites with the wolf puppy!
After the Strom the Expedition scatters, Rex loses the Brown Dog as she's too occupied with trying not to abandon the wolf puppy again. But wolves should be with wolves and Rex is not welcome to hang around the reclusive wolf pack's territory now that there isn't a Storm anymore.

But! As Rex is aimlessly and newly without a purpose just wandering around, the wolf puppy - well, a young wolf by now - finds them! Rex feels guilty for letting her come with them, almost stealing her away from her pack, but for a short, delightful while, Rex and the wolf - now called Varjo (or Rjo, as Rex thinks it is ) travel together!

Then Rex loses Rjo again, finds the Brown Dog and loses her again too, joins a small pack, Emot, and even finds Rjo again. There is even another brown dog, Bree (Brae ©kaamos) in Emot and she's nice.

For a while it seems that things are turning out okay. Maybe they could belong with Emot. Yeah, maybe Rex is going gray with worry when it seems that she just can't keep Rjo safe and Bree gets attacked too, and it feels like she can't protect anyone, but mostly it's okay. Not great, not good, but okay.

Until Rex gets infected with a plague and unwittingly brings it to the rest of the Emos. To Bree. Who is pregnant.

When very weak and sick Bree then finally gives birth, the puppies are dead. Rex has killed them. She promised to help Bree raise them and instead she killed them. She doesn't stick around to find out that not all of the puppies. are dead, but leaves immediately. She doesn't know where she's going and at that point doesn't really care either.

When Rex gets caught in a Sun Storm and loses their memory again, it's almost a relief and probably the only reason they don't walk off a nearest cliff.

Very weak from the Storm and still recovering from the plague it's very possible that they would soon die anyways.
