About
Personality
Intelligent . Snarky . Sarcastic

"Tch. Why is everyone here so dumb? I can't stand any of you."

PINTEREST BOARDS

Duncan is often irritable, and he makes no effort to hide it on his face. Easily annoyed by others, he comes across as rude and straightforward. He often looks down on those he thinks cannot do better than him and this leads to plenty of people disliking him for his attitude. He has high expectations towards himself and others and he will not settle for anything less.

Despite this, Duncan is actually quite intelligent. There are those who hold him in high regard because of his vast knowledge on plenty of subjects. He has good memory and can get to memorizing a chunk of text quite easily while understanding it at the same time. He always excels in his tests and he is always proud of his achievements, to a point where he even sounds condescending while talking about it. He is always chosen by his classmates and teachers as the representative of debates and various school competitions.

Even though he is well known and praised for his intellect, he does not have much he can call his “friends”. The friends he had in the past who were not repulsed by his attitude have drifted apart from him overtime because Duncan would rather spend time alone studying or reading books than checking up on them. Growing up mostly alone by choice, it is hard for Duncan to form close personal connections with anyone unless they were forced to be with him for a long period of time (like Chanto). Other than that, Duncan also has a hard time handling or dealing with his emotions. If he deems it unnecessary, he is likely to just push it down and forget about it. This leads to others saying that he is heartless and/or apathetic, but he does not really mean any true harm or malice towards others.

Duncan deeply cherishes those who manage to worm their way into his heart, though he would never admit it even on his deathbed. He just does not know how to express genuine affection without him feeling sheer embarrassment. If he catches himself forming a genuine smile or becoming soft, he tries to look away in case anyone notices.

Story

Duncan was named so because of his parents. The both of them were heavily into literature and Shakespeare. When they decided to choose a name, they drew lots from a jar filled with names from the Shakespearean play, "Macbeth". At the time, it was their favorite play by him.

As a kid, his parents always had high expectations of him. They always expected him to do good in school, especially in his tests. He managed to do that and his parents were pleased. They praised him every time he did good and got disappointed whenever he didn't reach his their expectations. This affected his mindset thus not caring about anything else other than what his parents say.

Because of the influence of his parents, he also started to have high expectations towards other people. He was very choosy when it came to making friends, and his bad attitude towards others made most people avoid him as much as possible. This is the reason why he never really made much friends in school. The only friends he made were people with the same level of intelligence as him, or people he respects in general. But even with that, he never really got personal with any of his so-called "friends". Duncan doesn't like to open up that much about his feelings, or talk about anything in general unless it was related to school or about factual information he could continue talking about for hours.

Despite his rudeness towards others, that didn't stop people from admiring him and wanting to get close to him because of his intelligence (and school notes). He was always seen as a teacher's pet, and even the faculty knows this because they know they can rely on him. He was known as a straight-A student, however the only thing he couldn't be really good at was sports (which he didn't really care much about since it wasn't academic).

Relationships
Aaron Vesre | weird best (?) friend

Aretha Franklin (cover by Tori Kelly) - I Say A Little Prayer

"...He's alright. Hangs out with me when I nee--ahem. Require him to. He's a bit clingy though. Not that I mind, but..."

Duncan sees him as a strange guy who loves to get touchy with him, though still considers him as a close friend (which he rarely does with people). Duncan respects him for being one of the few who is at par with him academically, and he trusts Aaron’s judgement when it comes to making decisions.

-

Duncan and Aaron met back in their early years of high school- Duncan being a first-year student while Aaron being a second-year student. Aaron was well known for being one of the smartest students in his batch, so Duncan took notice. Since Duncan is that type of asshole who does not talk to anyone unless they're an equal academically, he began conversing with Aaron.

Aaron took a liking to Duncan because of his wit and intelligence. As time passed, they eventually became close friends. Aaron would jokingly flirt with Duncan for fun because he knows Duncan blushes easily. Even with Aaron's flirting, Duncan doesn't really push him away.

They often go out for coffee and discuss about new books, research, or just anything about their daily lives. Aaron would talk about the things he learns in college while Duncan listens willingly. Sometimes, Aaron would invite Duncan to go out to sightsee for a change of pace. Even with Duncan declining, Aaron would still force him to go (often making Duncan sigh and adjust his schedule).

Chanto Valerin | "best" friend, rival, former enemy

"Dumbass. Ugh... her optimism is way too irritating for my tastes and I've had to endure that for years. I also catch her fishing out my notebooks from my bag when she thinks I'm not looking. The nerve of that girl, really!"

Duncan tolerates her, but mostly finds her annoying. They've been classmates (and enemies) grade school, but only became good friends because of Aaron and the fact that they’ve had to deal with each other for almost a decade. Whenever he would pass by her in school, he would always lightly smack her on the head (as a joke), much to her annoyance. They both act like siblings who always fight.

-

Both of them had been schoolmates since grade school.

When they were in 2nd or 3rd grade or so, Chanto had a small garden beside their school playground which she tends to every recess, lunch and before she goes home- which was around 2pm. She cared deeply for the garden, and she took a lot of time making it pretty and colorful.

There was a bench next to the garden to which Duncan does his book-reading every 4pm, 2 hours after school ends. Duncan didn’t know that the garden was personally owned and thought that it just belonged to the school.

One day, after reading one of his books, he decided to mess around with the small garden since he thought no one cared about it anyways. He was bored, waiting for his parents to pick him up to he wanted to entertain himself. On that day he brought with him two important books that belonged to his mother, so he had to keep them both safe. Duncan forgot about this fact though, so he brought his two books with him while stepping on the flowers and kicking the dirt.

Chanto had to stay until 4pm on that day because she had to catch up with schoolwork. She had been absent for the past 3 days due to a sickness, so she had missed out on plenty of lectures and homework. As 4pm finally rolled around, she got her watering can to water her small garden by the playground after a few days of being neglected. When she finally got there, that’s when she saw the garden. And him.

Everything was ruined- the plants, the rock arrangements, the grass, everything was a mess. Duncan stopped kicking around and looked at Chanto while she stared back at him. It was silent for a few minutes until Chanto started crying slowly. She couldn’t stop crying until Duncan slowly spoke up, but the first thing he said was “Why are you crying? It’s not like this is your garden anyways”.

Chanto finally stopped crying for a few seconds but soon after, she screamed and took off the cover of her watering can to throw all the water contained inside at him.

Duncan yelled loudly as he stepped back a few steps, soaking wet. He didn’t care that he was wet though, the only thing that was on his mind was the fact that the two books he brought with him were soaking wet as well. He knelt down, checking the books. No good. The pages were fully drenched and the words were blurry and hard to read. He should’ve put those books on the bench, he told himself. He was in big trouble.

He didn’t have time to dry the books though, right at that moment his mom’s car finally came. Duncan panicked and thought to blame Chanto immediately but when he looked back, Chanto was gone. She had run away in tears to tell someone about her ruined garden.

Duncan’s parents were immensely disappointed with him for failing to do the simple task of taking care of those books. He had been grounded for a week and even though he reasoned repeatedly that Chanto was the one who threw the water, his parents did not take any excuses. Duncan hated disappointing his parents, and this was the first time he’d been harshly scolded by them.

Ever since that day, Chanto and Duncan hated each other. Every time they would pass by each other in the hallways, they would glare at each other and even start physical fights. It seemed like luck was not on their side though, as there has not been a year where they have not been classmates. Time passed, and their sheer hated for each other slowly dissolved as they slowly learned to get used to each other’s presence. They joke that they will never forgive the other because of that incident, but they both know they have long since moved past that.

Laverne Carier | person of interest

"She has the look of someone who's smart and knows what she's doing. I like that. Too bad she doesn't study at our school. We could have possibly been classmates."

Duncan sees her as the (really cute) librarian girl whom he occasionally sees on his visits to the library. He often asks for new books the library has available but in reality, he just makes excuses to talk to her and form a closer bond. Unfortunately for Duncan, he has no idea how to talk to girls.

-

Duncan first sees Laverne working at the school library on her first day there and asks what her purpose is since she's a new face. Laverne mentions she started work as an assistant librarian with the approval of the principal, but he doubts that. Duncan asks what kind of books she's into and she replies with a list of novels, some of which are also Duncan's favorites-- to his surprise.

As they both share the love for reading, they get along quite well. At times they would even discuss about current events and debatable topics, as they both have very interesting takes and opinions.
