About

Duncan was employed at the Axiom Agency at around the same time as Aaron, since they both applied together. The company recognized his intelligence and capability, so he was immediately hired.

As a forensic psychologist, his main job is to provide assessments for criminals or clients assigned to them by the agency from a court-ordered judge. While he doesn't mind conducting extensive interviews, he does get frustrated when clients don't comply or if they're being stubborn. During these situations, Duncan always remains impartial and never picks sides as his only job is to gather and provide accurate information to make solid and sound judgements.

He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Psychology (speacializing in forensics), so he spends most of his hours studying alongside doing work. During his free time (and outside of reading books), he likes to relax and wind down by playing classical music on his piano.

Past

As a kid, Duncan has always been fascinated by the concept of psychology and understanding how people's minds worked. Being always fond of reading, his parents often gave him complex books to read, some of them being about science, law, and different court cases from the past.

His interest carried on to his teens and adulthood, to which he was finally able to pursue his favored course. That is where he met both Aaron and Chanto, his soon-to-be best friends as they were also in similar courses.

Aaron & Duncan’s final case together

During this time, Duncan and Aaron were still romantically involved so they tend to have plenty of lighthearted moments. During this particular case, Aaron invited Duncan to come with him to a warehouse to investigate. Despite his busy schedule, Duncan nevertheless agreed to go so he could spend more time with Aaron.

They explored inside and came across a particular room. Aaron was feeling a little cheeky that time and asked Duncan to play a little game of coin toss. “Whoever gets heads gets to look inside the room, while tails gets to be the one on standby.” Duncan merely rolled his eyes and shook his head, replying “Really? At this time?” but still obliged eitherway. And so, Duncan ended up getting heads while Aaron ended up with tails.

Duncan entered the room, flashlight in hand. There were nothing but crates and boxes inside, especially in the middle of the room. Aaron was watching from behind a glass window and gave him the signal to check them. Duncan opened one of the crates but soon came to regret his actions as what was inside it was nothing other than a bomb that would immediately detonate after lifting the lid.

It was too late for them to escape– the blast ended up severing Duncan’s right arm and blinding his left eye from the debris. The glass in front of Aaron shattered, a fragment piercing Aaron’s right eye. The whole room was on fire and the ceiling collapsed on top of Duncan. The sheer amount of adrenaline that kicked in masked the pain Aaron felt, as he wasted no time and immediately rushed inside to remove the burning rubble that was on top of Duncan. The two made it out of the warehouse alive, though not without any repercussions; especially for Duncan.

They both knew it was an accident, but that never stopped Aaron from continually blaming himself for failing at his job. He ultimately regrets being stupid enough to play a little game on a serious mission, and the fact that he, despite him being a top investigator, was not able to sense the fact that they were being lead into a trap.

"After all, why solve a case after it's happened... instead of preventing a case before it happens?"

"That is what sets a great detective apart."

Trivia

  • He used to smile more often, though the accident made him more melancholic.
    • He doesn’t blame Aaron for what happened and holds no ill will towards him. He just wishes he could be friends with Aaron again, but Aaron doesn't look like he'll be letting things go very soon.
  • As unusual as it is, he has slightly colder body temperature compared to others. He always wears multiple layers of clothing because of this; but as a result he can't stand heatwaves.
  • Because his prosthetic arm is detatchable (for maintenance checks and cleaning) he has to make sure it doesn't get pulled on too hard while he's out.
    • Chanto always does this to mess with him, much to his chagrin.
  • Chanto tried lending one of her hairclips to Duncan to put up his bangs but he says it's probably better that his blind eye stay covered because he already gets enough weird looks from others...
  • It's always been a habit of his to listen to classical music while reading to help him concentrate, though he only does this at home. He only reads in silence when he's required to absorb very important information.

Design notes

  • His prosthetic arm is on his right (our left) while his blind eye is on his left (our right). Please don't interchange the two or put both on the same side!
  • He always has his hair in a low ponytail, but he can have his hair down. It is around shoulder length.
  • The burn scars on his face are not random. There's one on his cheek below his regular eye that reaches his neck and around the area of his blind eye (covered by his bangs but you can still see a bit of it).
  • The sleeve of his jacket/shirt on his prosthetic arm is usually folded at around elbow length so he can bend his arm easier. He sometimes puts it down though.

Relationships

Aaron [ coworker, ex-boyfriend and work partner ]

Sam Smith - Writing's On The Wall || Evanescence - Never Go Back || Aquilo - Silhouette

"He's too hard on himself."

Duncan's previous work partner... as well as his ex-boyfriend. The two go a while back as they were schoolmates in the same university along with Chanto. While they didn't take the same course, they met up often because they shared the same classes and interests. They were eventually hired by the Axiom Agency at the same time and that's when their relationship developed into a more romantic one. While they did their best to hide it because they were in a work setting, everyone knew they were together. Romantic relationships at work are generally discouraged, but their boss allowed it since they knew they were both very responsible and capable of putting the proper priorities first.

Although... their feelings for each other would eventually be the cause of their demise. The accident happened and Aaron deeply regrets the choices he made that day and often blames himself for what happened. This lead to him breaking up with Duncan in order to distance himself, as well as so he can prevent something similar from ever happening again.

The two still see each other often since they're coworkers, but things tend to get awkward when they're alone. While Duncan tries to get closer to Aaron again as he doesn't blame him for what happened, Aaron often finds an excuse to push him away- his heart swelling with pain and regret every time he looks at Duncan.

Chanto [ best friend ]

"Hah. She can't hurt me if she ends up punching my metal arm."

Duncan's best friend from college. The two didn't have the best relationship at first; with Duncan not being used to Chanto's peppiness and Chanto finding Duncan really boring. With Aaron always inviting them both to hang out with him, they eventually began to get used to each other's presence and even enjoy it. They constantly bicker and almost have a sibling-type relationship, with them always trying to one-up each other (and annoying the other with tickling, poking, and playful punches). As they both have science-related courses, they always try to help each other study in their respective subjects (although it's usually Chanto the one asking Duncan for help).

After the accident, Chanto became more worried for Duncan though he always insists that he's fine. He doesn't want anything to change, especially since Aaron has already drifted away from him. Chanto always insists that she accompany Duncan whenever he's free, and he usually complies because really, he needs the company.

Lucius [ coworker ]

"Whatever's going on with him is none of my business."

Lucius' coworker in the same agency. They don't have the best relationship especially with their connection to Aaron, but they still both hold professional conversations with each other when it comes to work. Although, there might be a sense of animosity between the two.
