Clothing Style

Char tends to wear a simplistic style that resembles traditional fighter clothing, usually consisting of sleeveless tops (either tank tops or regular shirts with the sleeves rolled up or torn/burned off, or sometimes more formal tunics or tops resembling martial arts gi), semi-loose pants or shorts, and cloth wrappings for his arms and legs. He doesn't usually like wearing shoes, but when he needs to he tends to wear either simple martial arts shoes or leather black boots if in rougher terrain, along with cloth wrappings around his shins. He usually wears a red and black striped headband around his forehead and a matching sash as a belt, and he usually wears reinforced gloves over his arm wrappings. His earrings are usually silver or black, and he typically doesn't accessorize much further than that so his movement won't be impaired. He tends to gravitate toward warmer colors, particularly reds, oranges, golds, and either browns or blacks depending on the outfit.

Personality

Char is a confident and honorable warrior of Maragelle who seeks out new challenges to better himself and learn about the vast world outside his reclusive village. He boldly faces his conflicts and problems with optimism, and he is known to tackle adversity with a fierce and unabashed attitude. Others know him to be seemingly fearless, and he never wants to let fear keep him from living his life or discovering new things. He's a very competitive person, but he never brags if he wins or becomes a sore loser if he doesn't. He values honor and integrity in competitions, whether it be in combat or anything else, and he's not the type to resort to dirty tricks to get the upper hand, even if the person he's facing is using such tactics against him. Char always seeks to better himself, so he's always looking for new challenges and ways to test himself. On a first impression he comes off as a cocky tough guy, but getting to know him a bit more shows he's obviously a honorable warrior that always shows others proper respect until they give him reason not to. Char is a very focused and determined young man that has unending optimism and hope about the world, and although he loves to fight he does not do so in particular to show dominance or feel stronger than others, but rather to improve himself and to be able to protect others that cannot do so themselves.

Char also has a bit of a fascination with modern society considering he originates from Neostra, which is vastly less technological than most of the other Orbitals of Crystaless. He comes from a tribe of Fyre rifters that live nearby an active volcano in the Maragelle jungle, so he's experienced with traversing tricky terrain and utilizing his survival skills. However, he's extremely curious about more developed civilizations, particularly the technologically advanced ones that rarely interact with Neostra. Upon moving to Air City, his excitement to interact with outsiders and their society has gone through the roof. Although he's not particularly tech savvy, Char is a very quick learner as long as a task is demonstrated to him in relatively simple terms. He has sharp wits and memory, so he can pick up on new things easily and remember how to do something without much reminder. However, Char is still rather inexperienced with various facets of modern society, and he comes off as a little naive sometimes since he doesn't always understand certain colloquialisms, pop culture, or other things that may be common knowledge to most people of Crystaless.

Although Char is rather easy to approach due to his friendly demeanor, he can also sometimes be a little intimidating due to his physical strength and his unwavering confidence. Few people challenge him to fights without knowing very well what they're getting into and having proper combat skills of their own. Regular thugs or people that think they're pretty tough will wind up flat on the ground within seconds against him, but Char never does anything to severely injure anyone whom he knows is not up to his level. Char tends to suggest to people to rethink their challenge if he feels they're getting in over their head, but if they insist he'll usually end the fight quickly by using their own attacks against them and dropping them as quickly as possible to avoid getting his opponent too beaten up, since he doesn't find any honor in trouncing a significantly weaker foe. He doesn't hold anything back against people that he respects or knows to be a legitimate challenge, since he considers either going easy on the other to be disrespectful to both of them. He can get pretty excited when he encounters people who would be a worthy challenge to fight, and he can also be a little dorky about getting those people to spar against him. Char is always very earnest about complimenting the skills of other people he observes, and he fully believes that positive reinforcement is the only way to improve and build someone up.

Backstory

Char was born in the Maragelle jungle of Neostra, both his parents being well respected warriors of their Fyre rifting village located near the largest volcano on the Orbital. Like many others of the village, Char was trained from a young age in various hand to hand combat disciplines along with learning to become a skilled rifter. He learned very quickly and remained at the top of his age group, and in time he even surpassed many older students as well, making his parents proud. Char was able to begin his training within the volcanic caverns years earlier than most students due to his advanced skills, and he spent a lot of time exploring the chambers and passages in the volcanic mountains.

However, one day a ship traveling to Shivarstra made an emergency landing in the jungle, which Char curiously went to investigate on his own. The vessel belonged to a crew of scientists and engineers transporting equipment to the Factesk laboratory, and Char watched in fascination from a distance as they worked on repairing their ship. This was the first time the boy had ever seen anyone from outside the jungle and any type of electronic technology, since Neostra has only one relatively modern city on the other side of the Orbital, and he was utterly enchanted by the "miracles" these people could perform with their tools. He watched until his father came across him while investigating the disturbance in the forest as well, and he forced his son to return home just after the ship was repaired and took off once again.

Since then Char has been obsessed with leaving Neostra and seeing more of these outsiders and their technology, which is thoroughly forbidden in Maragelle. The villages consider outsiders and technology to be dangerous or even evil, and his parents commanded him to drop such fantasies and forget the incident ever happened. Char of course secretly wondered about the outside world and held onto his dream.

At the age of 13, Char encountered a group of outsiders, specifically Mackerby Rainstle, Mara Magentis, and their companions. This strange group was apparently searching for crystal fragments scattered about by an evil force called the Dark Matter, and Char recalled seeing a similar fragment within the volcano after it had fallen from the sky weeks earlier. Since Mac was the only one capable of handling the volcanic conditions with his ability to absorb elements, Char offered to escort him to the chamber where the crystal fell. Upon finding the crystal, the two were attacked by the Dark Matter, and Char was possessed and attacked Mac until he was able to expel the Dark Matter from Char's body with his rifting. Since that day, Char has considered Mac to be a close friend and promised they'd encounter each other again.

About two years later, Char sneaked out of Maragelle to travel across Neostra to the city. It was there he explored the more developed civilization settled there, and he also learned about an advanced city on the main planet of Crystaless called Air City. Apparently the owners of the island the city was located on were inviting people of all walks of life from all of Crystaless to the island to partake in the testing of the new Air Mechs, a rifting responsive personal vehicle personalized to each individual rider. The recruiters there immediately took interest in Char and his mastery over his rifting and offered him an invite, which he eagerly accepted. From there he traveled with them back to the city, which was far beyond his expectations of modern society.

Although it took some time for him to adjust to the culture shock, he surprisingly adapted to his assigned Mech very quickly, which was a Fyre Drayk motorcycle developed for him by the owner of MC*Corp and Air City, Dar’Kenai Chalco. Despite never having driven anything in his life, Char learned very quickly and his skill in rifting allowed him to bond with his Mech's rifting network almost seamlessly. It was here that Char encountered Mac and Mara again, and he assisted in handling the chaos brought about when Shaderesk Demrile attacked Crystaless.

Trivia:

  • Char's original concept was, like the majority of the other characters in the Savior Son series, another "puffball" person since the story was originally based in a modified Kirby universe. He was a red colored Kirby (based on the red color palette from Kirby Air Ride on the Gamecube) and named Char to reference fire, and his last name simply references his color. A few other colored puffballs were also named after colors, like Indi (based on the blue Kirby) and Violet (purple), but Char was named more toward his element similarly how Arbi was named as the green Kirby and referencing arbor/plants.
    • Char's unique trait as a red Kirby was a red headband with a fire symbol on it. The headband has been redesigned for his humanoid form, but it's still a signature trait for him.
  • His original full first name was going to be Charles, but that sounds a little too Earth sounding for the environment he's in. Not to say that I don't use normal names for other people on Crystaless, but there's not that much "fantasy" to the name Charles in my opinion, unless you're some fancy prince or whatever.
    • Charif is a name of Lebanese origin that means "honest." Seems fitting.
  • Char's personal Air Mech is a Fyre Drayk Motorcycle. It has a relatively high speed but is a rather weighty vehicle and can be tricky to handle for beginners. It is extremely sturdy though and essentially immune to most elements and built to be virtually indestructible, making it a very solid Mech for both combat and racing. However, since it is a motorcycle model, its hovering and gliding capabilities are extremely limited, and it's even more limited than other motorcycle models due to its weight.
    • The Fyre Drayk's general design and key traits are based off the Rex Wheelie vehicle from Kirby Air ride, which is the vehicle I always picked for the red colored Kirby palette.
  • Quite a few people are pretty sure Char has a crush on Marsh, and it's pretty obvious to almost everyone except Char and Marsh themselves. Char just thinks she's really cool and awesome looking and highly skilled and impressive.
    • The two end up becoming closer because Char loves sparring with her. Marsh thinks he's a little weird since he likes fighting so much, but she didn't mind his company since he wasn't really aggressive at all in terms of personality.
    • A long while later, Indi calls him out on him being "totally in love with Marsh," and he has the realization, "You know what, you're right. I am! I should probably tell her, right?" and then immediately ran off to find her. Indi was baffled.
  • He's also pretty oblivious to the amount of chemistry he seems to have with Dar’Kenai, but that doesn't seem to bother Dar’Kenai because he is also completely oblivious of how much supposed "sexual tension" is observed to be between them by others. Char just really likes him and doesn't realize some of his behavior is seen to be very flirty and forward. Dar’Kenai can sometimes be flustered by it, but it's not because he thinks it's flirting; he just isn't used to intimate and personal interactions/relationships in general.
    • Once Char realizes he's in love with Marsh, he also comes to the conclusion that he must also love Dar’Kenai. I mean, why wouldn't he? They're both great. Dar’Kenai is completely surprised at the confession despite all the signs, but he seems awkwardly okay with it so far. He's just not really sure how to react to it even though he comes to the conclusion that Char does mean a lot to him and he's been too unaware of either of their feelings.
  • It's also a rumor that Char and Mac are also a thing of some kind, but that's only because Char really looks up to Mac ever since they met in Maragelle, not to mention that both Char and Mac just seem to be super friendly and intimate with everyone they even remotely like, so they seem particularly sweet with each other.
  • A lot of people seem to think that Char and Turbo have an extreme rivalry between each other, but honestly neither of them really know each other that well or think that much of each other. Turbo just gets teased too much by other people that Char is a better racer and also a better Fyre rifter, so Turbo tends to be really hostile toward Char in general even though he doesn't even personally dislike him. Char is a little confused by how worked up Turbo gets about this rivalry, but he doesn't dislike Turbo in any sense and just thinks it's competitiveness.
  • In the original outline for the entire Savior Son plotline, Char was supposed to meet Mac and Mara for the first time in Air City. I decided to include him in the Dark Matter adventure since they would end up traveling to Maragelle where Char came from anyway, so they could meet there first and reconnect in Air City instead.
    • Neostra as a whole and Maragelle specifically were inspired by Neo Star from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It was the jungle world that ended with traveling to a volcano, and I figured this environment would be a good place for Char and Arbi to originate from.
  • Old Charahub blurb: "A young but fierce warrior of the secluded Maragelle Fyre rifters, he is eager to explore the modern world outside his undeveloped home planet."
