Pelly grew up in a dysfunctional family. His father was always away on “business trips” and for the short time he was home it was always yelling and fighting. The tension of a now loveless relationship caused his mother to fall into depression. Because Pelly was so young, she felt obligated to stay and often blamed him. What started out small soon escalated, verbal abuse and negligence became Pelly’s everyday life. Growing up he was conditioned to believe that it was his fault. With the lack of his father and a strained relationship with his mother, Pelly grew up very independent and was forced to care for himself.

Due to his home life Pelly had a hard time interacting with peers, he ultimately lost his own perception of identity and self worth, along with, relationships and interaction. Around the beginning of middle school Pelly witnessed a school group performing traditional Chinese dance and he fell in love with it. The beauty of the dancers movements captivated him. He became infatuated with dance and it allowed him an outlet to express himself. He began dancing whenever he was alone. At first he was quite bad at it; he was too stiff, not very flexible and his movement were sloppy, but just the act of moving felt liberating to him.

Subheader

In high school the issues at home became more manageable. His father and mother finally got a divorce, he stayed with his mother and soon after she remarried. Pelly continued exploring his love for dance throughout high school, mainly traditional Chinese and contemporary. Although his mother still seemed resentful towards him, now with a more loving marriage, she didn't abuse Pelly as she used too. His new father even made attempts to get closer to him but Pelly distanced himself from them, especially towards the middle of high school when his little sister was born. Around this time Pelly's family also decided to send him to study abroad in Korea. He moved in with some family there and eventually moved into his own place once he got into college.

Pelly grew up with a distorted view on relationships so he had a hard time knowing how to interact with others, as a result he became very observant. He observes how others interact and mimics it just like baby. Even though this may make much of his interactions seem forced, Pelly is actually quite earnest when trying to communicate. Pelly is also very mature, since he had to grow up at an early age he handles things most his age wouldn't be able to very well.
