Clothing Style

Since Aros’s default form is a dragon, he only wears clothing in his humanoid form, and he usually doesn’t have much reason to change clothing all that often since he isn’t in his humanoid form very frequently anyway. He usually dresses in blue robes that match well with his skin and scale color scheme.

His current default outfit is a very layered outfit including a light blue inner layer, and dark blue/nearly black middle layer, and a blue robe layered on top. The light blue layer folds over in the front like a kimono, has long and broad sleeves, and has a long train in the back that trails somewhat on the ground. It has darker blue trim and cross-hatch patterns on the chest and inside the sleeves and train. His middle layer is not visible at the chest area and is mostly seen at the sleeves, which are not as long as the lighter blue sleeves and layer over them while ending slightly past the elbow with a diagonal cut opening. He also wears fairly form fitting pants that match the dark blue color of this layer. His top layered robe has an inner section that folds in the front like a kimono as well, but it has a lower V-shaped cut to show the lighter blue inner layer. The bottom of this layer  This robe also has is about tunic length and ends at a point in front. The outer layer is structured like a long bushi jacket and drapes to knee-length. Both the inner and out layer of this robe has lighter blue trim and cross-hatch patterns, the inner one having the pattern in the front at the chest and at the bottom, and the outer one having the pattern on the back panel and along the bottom.

Over these layers, he wears a dark blue obi around his waist along with a lighter blue cord with tassels and gold beads. He wears knee-high boots that are mostly blue and match his outer layer. They are lighter blue at the toes, dark blue accents at the center and down the center up to a wrapped section over the ankles, and very light blue around the top edge. Each of his layers have a cutout for his tail. His accessories consist of gold bangles around different sections of his hair, sectioned off as low ponytails, and another tasseled cord around his left horn.

Personality

Very few people are even aware of the Water Dragon’s existance in Varloryn, much less know him on a personal level. The only people who seem to be somewhat familiar with him are his seers and mystics who serve him at his temple. They view him as a serene and intellectual leader of their order who keeps a calm and balanced demeanor. He does not speak often, but he is always gentle with his words and fair in his judgment. Aros tends to be calm and steady like the sea, but he can become unrelenting and wrathful like a storm when the balance is disrupted. His emotional state is heavily tied to the balance of Varloryn, and he is susceptible to being emotionally volatile and uncontrollably enraged against his will when this occurs. Under normal circumstances, Aros is gentle and prefers to protect, ward, and heal rather than resort to violence. He takes his responsibilities very seriously and dutifully remains at his vigil, but his followers have noticed he seems weary and moves more slowly as of late. It is likely he is finally showing signs of the toll that his endless watch over the ocean is taking on him, but he would never acknowledge it nor speak of such things.

Abilities

  • Watyr rifting - lesser deity rank
  • Mastery over various magics of Varloryn, particularly healing/restorative and protective/warding spells
  • Shapeshifting into a humanoid form, dragon form is default
  • Superhuman strength and stamina
  • Virtually immortal and has accelerated regeneration
  • Underwater breathing along with increased agility while swimming

Strengths

  • Patient, level headed, and watchful
  • Resilient, dedicated, and just
  • Serene, intelligent, and humble
  • Focused, stalwart, and vigilant

Weaknesses

  • Forever shackled to his duty to protect Varloryn from the relentless death entity encroaching from the ocean
  • His emotional state is heavily influenced by the balance of Varloryn, and inbalance and injustice will drive him into a rage and make the seas treacherous
  • Although powerful and resilient, his strengths are primarily for healing and warding, so he is not optimal for direct combat
  • Away from water, he is slow moving and prone to the weariness brought on by his endless vigil

Backstory

The legends of Varloryn tell of four deities crafted by the Ancients when the land was first forged. One of these deities was the Ocean Dragon, who held domain over the waters of Varloryn and the surrounding oceans. Although few people know much of the Ocean Dragon beyond the notion that they watch over the seas, those devoted to the Ocean Dragon know of his endless vigil along the south-western coast. A mysterious entity of death from the depths of the ocean is constantly seeking to bring ruin to the underwater kingdom of Obenox and to encroach upon the mainland beyond the surface. Obenox houses a temple in devotion to the Ocean Dragon, and for generations the seers of this temple have served and supported their deity in protecting Obenox from this terrible entity and ultimately keeping the ocean bordering Varloryn safe.

In recent times though, the human kingdom of Kenadrie has grown into an empire with use of unprecedented technology in their weapons and new mechanical troops. Obenox was invaded and nearly razed by their machines, and the Ocean Dragon has since disappeared. Without his presence, a shroud of darkness has fallen over the ocean, making it impossible to traverse due to deadly storms and unrelenting fog. Very few seers of his temple remain following the invasion, but one, a mystic named Cilicea, has charged herself with finding their missing god and restoring their temple and kingdom to power to once again banish the deathly entity from Varloryn before it consumes the mainland as well.

Trivia:

  • Aros is inspired by the Blue Dragon card from the Lost Kingdoms game series. The Blue Dragon is one of four legendary beasts that the player can battle and/or obtain, and in the first game, it is the only one of the four beasts that does not battle. It is purely a healing beast, and it challenges you to defeat the Kraken instead in order to earn its help as a card for your deck. In the second game, the Blue Dragon is now a monster to battle, and it only appears at the end of a 20 level gauntlet dungeon with the other three beasts.
    • Aros’s development was inspired by this change between games, indicated that he is normally a healing/restorative entity who prefers not to battle, but he can be driven to violence when the situation changes for the worse. Talking in more detail about it would be a huge spoiler for the story though. XP
    • I considered switching the elements of the legendary beasts around to make it more different from the source material, but I like the idea of Cilicea being a seer for his temple too much. I guess that just means I have to design his dragon form to be very different from that of the card to make up for it. ^^;
  • A while ago I bought a slate and white colored dice set intended for another character from The Forgotten Kings, Arael. However, when I later finalized his design, I forgot I had bought this dice set for him and didn't give him a color scheme with any blue in it at all, so I decided to just look for a different dice set for him and save the slate one for later. I had no idea who to give it to other than maybe a blue orc character I have yet to create, but the blues didn't really match that much. I now realize that this set would be perfect for Aros.
  • Aros was this character's name before I acquired him, and dangit, I totally fell into the trap of "pretty much everyone in this story has 'ar' in their name somewhere." I didn't even name them and it still happened, I can't escape. ^^;
