What does anyone know about Lacar? The scars and the jaded disposition say he's seen far more than anyone around him has. The nature of those things, we can only guess from the dull glimmer in his eye, or the way his cheek twitches at a flash in the dark.
Tragedy, he most definitely knows. Death? Seems inevitable, with a face like that. Fire? It's there in his past somewhere. The burns say so. The rest is shrouded in enigma.
Lacar simply doesn't speak much, and often lies by omission. To get the answers from him, one must make one's questions unavoidable.
He is piercingly perceptive, both of physical details, and of emotions and intentions. You might read nothing from his face, but he reads everything from yours.
He knows to tack the sails when the wind changes, or so to speak. He doesn't stay on a sinking ship.
Lacar can seem lazy to some, because he delegates work to others whenever he can. He is equal parts survivalist and principled, but when it comes time to choose, survival always wins out in the end.
It's mostly spoilers, but here's what we do know: Lacar used to be a smuggler close to the Greater Isles, before he turned himself over to the Orsandin occupiers, and became a sailor in their navy.
Then all but four of his crewmates were murdered.
Not a soul in this world, other than Lacar himself, knows nor remembers what happened in the gaps of that story.
