Bastet

"Kings and Queens have bowed to me, what makes you think you can refuse for long?"

Legends tell of a monster, a beast born from fire that left the lands in ruin in its wake. A legend told to children in an attempt to behave; listen to your parents dear children lest the Devouring Flame comes for you. In other corners, there exist whispers of a lost god- a god in the form of a cat who gave prophecies of the future in exchange for riches and sacrifices. There is truth in all legends but none would think to link the two legends to the same creature.

Bastet is an ancient Lopdiemis who has lived many different lives. She has a silver tongue; charming and persuasive, she can manipulate anyone to her whims without their knowing. She can see the desires of others and know exactly what strings to pull to make them fall into her palm. There is little she loves more than the sheer power she can hold over another, how their life is held hostage by her whims. How they serve her with loyalty built on fear. She is a Goddess and she decides who lives and dies. She's an arrogant Lopdiemis, fully believing she is untouchable and invincible. Anyone who dares to challenge her finds themselves wrapped up in a deal they cannot escape - or in a ditch for the vultures to find. Bastet does not take kindly to insults or back talk, the many scars that litter Skyla's body are testimony to that fact.

Bastet holds herself with grace and poise, an enticing sight for those who don't know better. Honeyed words and sweet promises are tossed around like cheap trinkets. Despite her past as a Warlord, Bastet chooses not to get her own paws dirty, instead she uses others to carry out her dirty work. That said, Bastet does have a sadistic streak a mile wide and is more than happy to dish out punishment herself onto her underlings, taking twisted pleasure from their suffering, knowing there is nothing they can do. Her influence reaches far and wide, thanks to the many spies and enforcers she has under her control. Information is constantly filtered to her, it is difficult to escape her many eyes and ears.

Beware her deals. There is a reason they seem too good to be true.

Present

Bastet lives a life of luxury in her stolen mansion in the Gloomy Forest. She sits atop a pile of riches that most Kamishiba can only dream of owning and her servant tends to her every whim. Bastet spends her days making deals and giving orders. She has no need for any earthly object, yet her greed and desire for power motivate her to continue manipulating Kamishibas to bend to her whims.

With her deal for her body now complete in a way. She keeps an eye on the De Serio household, Mercutio is still crucial to her plans as she needs him alive to keep Skyla in check. She forces deals from the weak, lonely, and desperate Kamishibas and then uses Tevlen and Skyla to enforce her side of her deal.

History

Bastet has spent more than just a few millennia on Aurora Land. For most of her immortal 'life' Bastet has been a Warlord, leading attack after attack against the Kamishiba population for nothing more than fun. The Pure Lopdiemis was an unbeatable foe... Almost unbeatable. During what should have been a simple and 'clean' raid on a Kamishiba city, an Astral appeared. The fight was long and bloody but in the end, Bastet was defeated and sealed away within the statue of a cat. Bastet was furious but unable to do anything from her prison. So instead the Lopdiemis watched in silence, regaining her strength for the day she would inevitably return.

The Kamishiba of Aurora Land quickly forgot about the Lopdiemis sealed within the statue of a cat. Her statue was passed around from city to city, tribe to tribe, and family to family, all unaware of the evil that watched them from the lifeless eyes of stone. The millennia that passed was uneventful for the Lopdiemis, stuck within her stone prison. But during her stay within a tribe, an innocent Kamishiba was killed for the debt of another in front of the statue and the innocent blood splashed onto the face of the statue. The effect was immediate. Large cracks formed across the left side of the face of the statue. But that was not all. While Bastet was still very much sealed within the statue, she could now talk and communicate with the outside world. The tribe's attitude towards the statue radically changed. Now the statue was a symbol of a divine being, a god in its own right. They worshipped the statue. And Bastet revelled in it. She demanded many lavish tributes, all of which she had no use for but the feeling of power the tributes gave her was unmatched. Soon the tributes evolved into deals of their own, the tribe wanting more 'proof' of their god's presence. While unable to do anything within the statue, Bastet still had her cunning and tricking the tribe was child's play. For many thousands of years, Bastet was worshipped by many different tribes, her statue still passed around. Eventually, she fell into the hands of a powerful family - taken as a trophy after defeating the tribe. A feat that Bastet would normally admire. But the victors hid their spoils in the basement of a mansion, hidden from sight. She spent countless years alone in the basement, for none who entered would stray close to the talking statue. But her fortune changed one day when a child strayed into her basement. Rosaline Li Santis was her name, an arrogant, self-righteous brat but foolishly brave for she approached the talking statue. The child was as foolish as she was ignorant and that made her the perfect tool. As the child grew, Bastet whispered in her ears, of lies and secrets, poisoning the child's heart and twisting her mind. As she grew, she was married off to a noble as per the tradition of her family. Bastet watched it all from the basement, waiting patiently for her moment to strike. Rosaline spent less and less time in the basement, when she finally returned it was with important news for her 'only friend' growing up. There was an egg. Rosaline had carried out her duty to her blood line.

Or so she thought. Bastet's eyes were sharper. The child was a bastard. Her husband had been unfaithful. It was perfect. She planted the seed of doubt within Rosaline's mind, letting her words plague the other's judgement and harbour uncertainty. For years, Rosaline festered in her suspicions, taking it out on 'her' child while her husband spent less and less time in their home. Until after a visit from the family doctor, she could take no more. She came to the statue for a deal. She was no fool and knew now what she had spent years talking to. What she offered was simple; she was dying and would willingly give the Lopdiemis her body to do as she pleased if Bastet would use it to wipe the wretched family line from Aurora Land, to carry out her revenge against the family that failed her. Bastet agreed and with Rosaline's blood, the Lopdiemis was finally free of her prison. On the night of the Lunar Eclipse, Rosaline's light faded from Aurora Land. Along with the light of all the Li Santis blood line, forced from the land by the jaws of a Beast. All except one. A broken window was evidence enough of what happened. Now Bastet searches Aurora Land for the survivor, to complete her end of the deal.

Acting

To manipulate others effectively, you need appear as what you are not. And Bastet is a master of hiding her true nature behind caring words and gentile smiles. She can tell almost immediately what persona will work best on her latest victim and can slip into that state of mind within seconds. Only those unlucky to be on Bastet's bad side or worse, the wrong end of one of her deals will know the true Bastet.

Painting

A surprisingly delicate skill for such a beast, Bastet has always been drawn to painting. She enjoys creating works of art- particularly those that reflect her power. She has spent many thousands of years before her imprisonment honing her skill, though her materials were not always the traditional or orthodox type.

Interrogation

There have been many incidents in Bastet's long life where she has needed to extract information from those unwilling to part with it. She knew what buttons to push, how much pressure to applied to get what she wants. Recently it is a skill she has put back on the shelf as she now has Tevlen to take care of it for her.

Singing

Bastet's vessel was quite the songbird in her life time. Bastet would often hear her practicing her singing while she was still trapped inside the statue. However that skill was not retained in the vessel when Bastet took over. Bastet's attempts at singing sound more akin to a cat's yowl than the sweet song of a bird.

Inventory

Broken Cat Statue [Trophy]

A large, stone statue of a cat, the left side of its face has completely crumbled away. Bastet proudly displays her former prison in her home. A subtle warning that she will not stay gone forever.

Small Portrait [Target]

A small portrait of a young Kamishiba, this is the last living member of the Li Santis family. Bastet keeps this portrait close to remind herself of her goal. She eagerly awaits the day she can run her claws through this portrait, just like all the others.
