Basics
Orion is a witch who was trapped in his mother's, Alcina's lantern for many years. When he was locked inside, Orion didin't remember anything about his past life and believed every illusion his mother weaved for him- but as years passed, he started regaining some of his memories, which alerted him that what he is experiencing is not real. Ultimately, Orion manages to escape, but he seems to be missing some of his memories from before he was trapped in the lantern. Alcina placed a curse on him which causes Orion to sleep entire day and awake at sunset.
He lives with his partner Iris and his friends and helps the current guardian of the forest, Marcelline, in taking care of it. She tries to find a way to break the curse to repay Iris for sarcificing his wings for cure for her wife.
Likes
- magic- Orion is a very talented witch, trained bt his mother, Alcina- who due to her bad experiences refused to officially accept Orion as her apprentice and successor despite his talent. Still, he loves learning new spells and reading about the few whose history is well recorded. He also enjoys reading legends about the Guardian of the forest, the powerful sorceress who seemed to reside there before his mother- but Alcina dutifully destroyed every manuscript about her she managed to find, the legends making her visibly uncomfortable. After a while, Orion stopped searching from more information on that topic.
- Ilya's cookies and tea with milk- Ilya and Orion are close friends and some of Ilya's most popular cookie recipes are especially tailored to cater to Orion's sweet tooth.Orion loves to visit Ilya in the after midnight, just when the bread started baking for the morning- Ilya always keeps tea and cookies for Orion and even though he is tired and busy, he always listens to his friend.
- dancing- Orion loves dancing as learning to dance and later dancing with his mother is one of his dearest childhood memories. Knowing her son's love for music and dancing, Alcina arranged festivals and balls for him when he was trapped inside her lantern. Now, free from his mother's spell, Orion especially enjoys the festivals in the town near the forest and he hopes that he'll be able to take Iris to one of them. He tries to teach Iris to dance, but even though that Iris is terrbile at it, Orion still enjys being able to spend some time with him.
- small, shiny trinkets- Orion has a bag full of mismatched trinkets and jewelry- many of them are gifts from his friends and some are charms given to him by Alcina- the jewelry he wears is one of these.
Dislikes
- flower bouquets and dried flowers- he sometimes panics and checks if there are any irises
- old castles- they make him uncomfortable
- forest animals- when was growing up in the forest, it was encased in a spell which turned humans who trespassed it into animal
- pumpkin cake- it's just too bland, not-sweet and smells weirdly, but everyone in the town and the forest seem to love that recipe. It's everywhere, especially in autumnn. He sometimes takes some from Ilya to give to Iris.

STORY
Orion was born in a small village just on th edge of the forest- a tiny settlement in an area prone to civil wars and natural disasters. With draughts, famines and costant armed conflicts, the forest was the only reliable source of food, however, it seemed to be cursed by it's guardian- a powerful sorceress residing inside. The curse affected only those of purely-human blood, and caused those who dared to trespass the woods to become animals and slowly lose the last pieces of their humanity. With more people dying from hunger every day, it was believed that the witch who protects the forest from human influence can be convinced to lift the curse by those who seem to be able to enter the woods without suffering from the curse- children with affinity for magic. One winter, like many children before him, Orion was chased away from the village, not allowed to return until he finds the sorceress and convinces her to lift the curse. Being very young and unable to take care of himself, the child would be sure to die in the woods- either starving to death or killed by one of the many predators occupying it- had he not been found by the guardian he was tasked to find- Alcina. She adopted the child and raised him as her son.
Alcina loved spending time with him and did everything she could to take care of her son and educate him- but with a curse placed upon her many years earlier, she knew that the boy’s life was in danger. Liliana, her mentor, cursed her to lose every person she cares about and she observed always tried to protect her child from seemingly small accidents which kept happening to him.
As he was growing up, Orion befriended Sylvain- a spirit bound to a teapot who was forced to watch over the castle in the forest by a demon residing in it. In an attempt to free his friend, Orion challenged the demon to a duel But as a result of his mother's curse, he was mortally wounded and Alcina, in an attempt to save her son, captured him in the lantern, just like Liliana before him, and healed him-but without enough experience with the device she deleted his memories as well. But as she tried to release Orion, she realized that she can't do this without letting Liliana free, and has to wait until her son learns how to leave the lantern by himself. But as long as the caster of the curse was alive, Orion would be in danger once he escapes- so Alcina created illusion of a happy life for him inside the lantern- hoping that the life he builds there and missing memories are enough to discourage him from looking for an exit
Ultimately Orion escapes, and Alcina in last attempt of keeping her son away from danger curses him to fall asleep at sunrise and wake up at sunset- hoping that such sleeping pattern will discourage Orion from leaving the forest in which she can protect him.
NOTES, FACTS AND HEADCANONS
-Orion knows several languages, including few dead dialects- due to Liliana’s age she was able to teach those to Alcina who later taught Orion everything he needed to study magic as extensively as she did.
-Orion has basic medical knowledge, but can’t use magic for healing
-He can’t bake, even though Ilya tried to teach him
-Orion loves music, and sometimes sneaks into Ilya’s house to listen to him playing the piano.
-He keeps up with all the new fashionable dances popular during festivals.
-He always carries some sweets with him
-Orion is terrible at elemental magic- more than once he set his shoes on fire accidentally.
-As a child, Orion traveled a lot with his mother- he especially liked visiting various ruins!
Relationships
Iris [ significant other ]
Iris is a nymph- a human-like being born from unfulfilled dreams of the dying which latched onto a closest small, still growing plant. He falls asleep at dusk and can't wake up until dawn- which makes spending time with Orion difficult. Iris and Orion can see each other only at suinsets and sunrises, when they talk and wait for the other to fall asleep.
He rarely leaves the forest- in fear of being caught by humans, sold and being used as a means to obtain nymphs’ flowers- which are believed to be a cure for most ailments- so Orion often tells him about the times he visited the nearby town or the festivals he saw! He would love to show Iris one of these one day!
Alcina [ Orion's and Ilya's mother, sorceress ]
Since she was a little child, Alcina, or then Penelopa shown a talent for magic and for that she, along her friend Bernadette were shunned by their families and neighbors- partially due to the superstitions fed by local leaders. After Bernadette was accused of causing te famine, and consecutively murdered, Penelopa fled the village in an attempt to hide in the nearby forest. Following the tales she heard as a little girl, Penelopa tried to find the famed guardian of the forest- a powerful sorceress who for ages kept it safe from humans.
Penelopa became the sorceress'- Liliana' apprentice, learning everything from her and pledging to keep the forest and it's occupants safe. But Liliana, after years of isolation was afraid that once Penelopa gains the knowledge and experience she desired, will leave her alone- so the sorceress devised the spell meant to keep everyone who entered the forest unable to leave it and made humans who entered it become animals after a while, but when she realized it's not enough, Liliana cursed her apprentice to keep losing every person she cares about, hoping that it'll cut Penelopa's connection to the anyone beside her. And just as she intended, the girl kept seeing the friends she made in the forest die- first Rowan- a nymph whose tree burned down in the forest fire, then Isolde- a human girl who fled her family after they tried to force her to marry- first became a rabbit and then was killed by the wolves.
Penelopa thought that the deaths of her friends are just unfortunate accidents, but once Liliana tried to trap her in the lantern, she realized it's not the case- and managed to trick her mentor and capture her in the lantern which was supposed to be her own prison. The lantern was Liliana's invention on which she worked for years to complete. It allowed it's bearer to construct and control realms within it, effectively trapping the people contained within it in an illusion of a happy life. Trying to leave her life with Liliana and keep her private life and new duty as the forest's new guardian separate, she chose a new name- Alcina, and built a small house in which she intended to hide until she'll find a successor to train.
Over the years, Alcina continued to take care of the forest as Penelopa and lived peacefully as Alcina. However the spell which Liliana placed on her didn't cease- as it's caster still remained alive. Alcina knew that she can't defeat Liliana, and kept her imprisoned. However, Aclina always wanted a family, so she tried to find a way to reverse the spell.
Alcina found Orion when he was a little child and raised him- he was just one of the many children abandoned in the forest. He became friends with Sylvain- an imprisoned spirit watching over a castle in the forest, and in an attempt to free his friend he challenged the demon residing in it for a duel. But as a result of his mother's curse, he was mortally wounded and Alcina, in an attempt to save her son, captured him in the lantern, just like Liliana before him, and healed him-but without enough experience with the device she deleted his memories as well. But as she tried to release Orion,s he realized that she can't do this without letting Liliana free, and has to wait until her child learns how to leave the lantern by himself.
Many years after imprisoning Orion, Alcina started taking care of another child- Ilya- a small angel whose parents readily gave up for few coins. With many spells placed in the forest Ilya was unable to leave and Alcina was afraid that she'll start caring for the boy as well- only for the curse to hurt him, like it did with her friends and Orion and avoided him and treated him like a commodity. At the same time, as Penelopa, she started training Marcelline- who was supposed to inherit her duty of taking care of the forest in the future. Alcina started taking frequent trips to Liliana's old home in which she taught Marcelline everything she known- leaving Ilya alone for extended periods of time. Eventually the boy escaped with the help of two sisters who were trapped in the forest as cats. Leaving, Ilya took one of Alcina made from him in the past- it changed his wings natural appearance, when they reflected the current state of the sky, to resemble suset as long as he carries the charm.
After Ilya's escape, Alcina was anxious that ultimately Orion will leave her as well, if he manages to escape the lantern so she kept him imprisoned, creating an illusion of happy life for him- as long as he stayed inside the lantern she didn't need to worry about him dying because of her curse or abandoning her.
Marcelline [ friend ]
Iris's best friend and a witch. She used to be an apprentice of Penelopa who inherited the duty as the forest guardian for Lilianne- the Guardian for the legends Orion loved as a child. However, Marcelline doesn't know anything about Lilianne- Penelopa was reluctant to share even that about her old mentor. Currently Orion lives with Marcelline in her home- the one which belonged to his hero many years prior- alongside Iris and Quinn.
Orion was introduced to Marcelline by Iris, but the witch wasn't charmed by him. She remained distrustful and even hostile towards Orion until Iris's wings were removed- Orion tried his best to help Marcelline take care of Iris, while she expected him to just leave.
Marcelline is very protective of Quinn and Iris- she sees them as her siblings, and tries to fulfill the role of the resposible, older sibling especially since she considers Iris to be very naive. She blames herself for the loss of Iris's wings- since he gave them up to save her wife by reversing the spell placed upon her, Marcelline felt indebted to her friend who gave a large part of his freedom and health in order to save the person Marcelline loved dearly. However, she didn’t want to feel like she didn’t give Iris anything in return, so she dedicated herself to find a charm which would help Orion counter the curse placed on him by his mother.
It took Marcelline some to warm up to Orion but his role in Iris's recovery helped to let her see him in a different light. They share love for Ilya's baking and like to visit the angel while he is working- he always seems to have cookies for Orion and fresh bread for Marcelline.
Marcelline greatly values Orion's input when it come to magic- he has more knowledge than her in some aspects and seems to be able to read few ancient languages fluently.
Orion made the star charm which is attached to Marcelline's hat for her birthday, using spells Alcina taught him many years prior.
Ilya [ Orion's younger brother and best friend]
Ilya is an angel adopted by Aclina, who fled the forest with the help of two sisters- cat shapeshifters trapped in the forest by an old spell. He was adopted by their parents and takes care of their bakery. He sometimes trades cakes and cookies for Marcelline's potions.
Orion doesn't know that Ilya is his brother, even though they are close friends.
Sylvain [ Iris's friend ]
A spirit bound to a teapot. Orion and Sylvain were very close friends, until Orion was captured in his mother's lantern- now he has no memory of Sylvain. He still lives in the same castle from which Orion tried to free him by agreeing to a duel in which he was wounded- despite painful memories of that place, he is too afraid to leave it.
