Mae Chouko

Mae Chouko is a woman who gains rainbow butterfly wings in her neighbor's secret laboratory.

Mae has light brown skin, and dark brown hair with tan bangs that reaches to around her shoulders. She has unnaturally vibrant green eyes, though they can change colours depending on her emotion. She has a rainbow butterfly tattoo on her left shoulder.

Mae's hair was entirely dark brown, and her eyes were a green that was almost hazel, before she was given her wings. She also did not have her tattoo before this.

Mae's wings are in the shape of Morpho polyphemus butterfly wings, and are rainbow in hue, pastel, and iridescent. When they are activated, patterns appear on Mae's face. Around her left eye appears a dark blue half butterfly, with three ribbon patterns attached to it extending away from her face. Beneath both of her eyes, there are three turquoise dots.

Mae has a style that varies from casual to semi-formal, sometimes wearing her favourite dark blue hoodie or a simple white strapless dress, and sometimes choosing outfits with a blazer, such as her blue shirt, brown pants, and black blazer with a diamond pattern cut in the left shoulder, which she wore when she was given her wings.

She also wears, once she acquires it, the necklace her personal memories are attached to, which is gold and shaped like a butterfly, with marquise cut emerald stones on the upper wings, and deep blue sapphires on the lower ones. On the head is a light amethyst, and on the body a pale marquise cut aquamarine. There is a round blue topaz stone on the back of the necklace. Even after her memories are no longer connected to it, Mae continues to wear it.

For her appearance at the final Iron Filings concert, she wears a black sequin suit and a strapless silver shirt, as well as dark eyeshadow and a pair of black velvet boots with a thick and tall heel. This is not her usual style, and she selected it to match the members of the band better.

Mae is very occasionally surrounded by a rainbow aura. This aura causes someone near her to become weakened, but driven to action. Mae does not know how to control this aura, and only has been able to use it once intentionally. It usually inconveniences her.

Mae is generally a friendly person who derives joy from new experiences. She is polite when meeting new people, as long as they are polite to her. She extends sympathy to people sometimes, even when it might be dangerous. Mae concerns herself with the wellbeing of those around her to the point of frequent worry, and feels guilt for causing others distress. Despite her worries, Mae feels that bad times are worth it for the good ones, and sees the value in transformative experiences. Mae is an anxious person, but struggles to accept her fear as a part of herself, and becomes focused on trying to kill it, before realising that it is deserving of compassion too. She can be prone to hypocrisy, condemning others for seeking out the same experiences she wanted. Mae is mildly judgemental of others. She is sometimes concerned with appearing responsible to her family. When in confrontations, Mae is hostile and sometimes derisive. Write more about her personality later etc etc

Mae lived her entire life in her hometown, a mid-size city with warm springs and summers, and frigid winters. She is the oldest daughter of accountant Isamu Chouko and his wife Ettie. Mae was named by her mother. When she was a child, Mae would be the May Queen during May Day celebrations, which her mother likely encouraged. Through her life, she occasionally attended different festivals and events, almost being pulled into a sort of magic act as a volunteer once. At age eleven, Mae got lost in an insectarium. Early in her life, Mae developed a fascination with butterflies, in part because of the meaning of her surname. She wanted Kaio to design a rainbow butterfly tattoo for her when she was sixteen, but did not get it until she was nineteen and received her wings from him. Mae's family lived next door to the Asgell family, and Mae became quite close to them, befriending Kaio, and eventually dating Rega. Mae staed at the Asgell house during some nights while she dated Rega, but stopped after Rega broke up with her. Mae, eventually, was asked by Gardenia Asgell to take care of her garden while she was away, and make sure the plants were watered.

Kaio Asgell

Kaio is Mae's neighbor, and later becomes her boyfriend. They were fond of each other for many years, with Kaio writing Iron Filings songs about his feelings for Mae in secret, and Mae thinking he was beautiful and singing along to his songs on her CDs in her room, but neither of them shared these feelings with each other. They became closer when Kaio showed Mae the laboratory in the basement and gave her wings. They spent more time together, and helped each other with trying to fix the magical problems Tornin caused them both. Mae admitted her feelings to Kaio, and while he was initially hesitant to have a relationship with her, because she dated his sister before and he didn't want to feel like a second choice. But, he decided to date her, and they continued to support each other, with neither regretting the relationship.

 Tornin Carlyle-Barrens

Tornin is Kaio's childhood rival, and because of that, he was not averse to causing Mae trouble. They had a hostile first meeting in a bus, their next one on the top of one. As an experiment to test magic he planned to use against Kaio, and under the influence of Mae's strange aura driving him to action, Tornin removed Mae's personal memories and sealed them inside of a necklace. He also gave a voice to Mae's fear, allowing it to speak to her. Tornin is disdainful of Mae, but occasionally plays at being cordial. He is not averse to using her to get what he wants, even if that means stalking, entering her hotel room, planning to set up a dinner with Mae to make Kaio upset, or considering manipulating Mae to attack Kaio. Due to Mae being a friend of Feris, Tornin tried once to assist Mae in undoing the magic he put on her fear. Mae and Tornin were only polite to each other in Feris' company. The last time Mae and Tornin saw each other, Tornin had her secured to a table so she could watch his attempt to murder Kaio. Mae has not forgiven him, but concedes that Feris has somewhat rehabilitated him since.

• Mae Chouko was created on August 24th, 2013, at 2:25 pm Newfoundland time. She was designed within that hour, and her design has changed very little since.
• Mae was previously the protagonist of an unreleased novella, and later two unreleased multi-book manga projects, before becoming the protagonist of Rainbow. In the novella, she was named Maytrix Sun, and in the manga projects, she was named Satsuki Chouko. Her current name is a combination of both of these previous names.
• Her favourite colour is blue, and her favourite flowers are satsuki azaleas.
