- Despondency owns a lovely assortment of plush pillows, each one chosen with care for its coziness and softness. They are all distinct in terms of size and design, but all share the same color pallet of soft pastels.
- He can often be found conversing with his stuffed animals, filling in the otherwise lonely presence of his room.
- Despondency has a soft spot for babycore aesthetics, with a fondness for pastel colors, cute characters, and nostalgic imagery reminiscent of childhood innocence. He finds comfort and solace in the gentle and soothing visuals.
- He has a weakness for indulgent desserts, particularly anything with strawberry or marshmallows.
- He feels uneasy and anxious at the idea of growing up. That deep-seated fear of the responsibilities and complications that come with age is what eats at him.
- He is a NEET. He does not work nor goes to school. He dropped out of high school during his sophomore year.
- Despondency's aversion to fire stems from childhood trauma. Whether from fireplaces, lit candles, non-electric stoves, or even depicted in movies, can trigger a dissociative state within him. These moments bring forth overwhelming emotions and memories, leaving him feeling detached and scared.
- He has a distaste for seafood, finding the taste and texture of fish and shellfish unappealing. He prefers to steer clear of seafood dishes, opting instead for alternatives that align more closely with his palate and preferences.
- He was born deaf in his right ear.
- He will sleep through during the worst of moments. Not even kidding.
- Despite his age, he still plays with toys. Baby dolls and yo-yos are his favorite. He also still watches children's cartoons such as Bluey or Sofia the First.
- He says 'um' a lot and pauses quite frequently in conversation.
- If Sorrow isn't home to feed him, his food choices are absolutely terrible. He'll take vanilla frosting and eat it straight from the container for dinner.
Despondency appears as unexpressive and detached, coming across as cold and aloof to those around him. He perpetually struggles with exhaustion, lacking enthusiasm and showing no passion or interest in much beyond sleeping. As a result, an unintentionally imposing demeanor is projected, despite not inherently embodying such a character. His underlying depression and sleep disorder, though not professionally diagnosed, significantly impacts his mood and perspective, causing him to see the world through muted lens. His sole happiness lies in sleep, as it provides an escape from pain and distressing memories. This interrupts most of his activities and drives him to become overly frustrated when things go wrong, forcing him back to sleep.
He consistently experiences overwhelming fatigue, often sleeping for longer than he intends and still waking up feeling more tired than before. His poor habit of dozing off at any given moment includes at odd locations, such as nodding off in the middle of a grocery store aisle or taking a snooze on the side of the road.
Despondency's subdued demeanor is not malevolent; rather, he is simply a lethargic individual. Sustaining a friendship with him proves challenging, as his drowsiness is known to annoy most people. Although he values companionship, he lacks the skill to actively engage in it. However, everything took a different turn upon meeting an amiable individual by the name of Quilo.
Despite his appearance, he's unamused and not very comical maybe cracking a smile once in a while. Cake will often try to drag Despondency into his silly pranks to make him giggle but only gets a straight face in return. They spend a lot of time together so it's a mystery as to why Despondency isn't as wacky as Cake.
Despondency was born into the hands of a loving mother and a compassionate father. He was birthed in Spring, a good omen for his family as it represented life and creation along with kindness and endearment. His parents loved their new baby and happily took him home to show Sorrow, his older brother. Sorrow had a babysitter watch over him while Despondency was born. He was only two and a half at the time, a baby himself. They didn't really know what to think of each other as they were both new to this world and the wonders it brought. But silently they both knew that they would grow to love each other and care for one another to the very end.
During a cold Winter night, a crystal campanula hidden deep in the snowy forest awoken. It was a flower that bloomed its illuming petals during a blue moon and his family along with the rest of the town were going to go visit it. All of the Tearbells happily chimed their ears when the flower glittered and shined in their presence. Like fairies, they started to dance, sing, and twirl at the light music the crystal campanula made. Despondency was only four years of age at the time, only ever remembering being memorized by the beauty of the flower. Soon after the music stopped, a variety of Tearbells stepped in line to be enchanted by the flower.
The Tearbells that touched the flower turned from a shade of blue to a lovely color of their choice. Despondency's eyes glimmered in interest and timidly asked his mother if he too could join them. He was happily ushered by his parents to join the batch and Despondency got in line. When it was his turn, a question arose from the flower; "What is your favorite color?" The little Tearbell had to think for a bit before confidently responding with 'Baby Pink.' The flower encouraged Despondency to touch one of its petals, and he did gently. Before his eyes, his skin absorbed from light blue to his favorite color of pastel pink.
Despondency was ecstatic and bounced on the balls of his feet in giddiness. He clapped his hands and proceeded to ask the flower if it could turn his eyes into the same pretty pink lilac as its upper petals. With its approval, Despondency touched its petals again and with pink lilac eyes he left to go reunite with his parents. After the small festival was over and the flower closed its petals, they all went home hand-in-hand.
Through-out the years, Despondency was raised in a very happy household. His parents showed him the love and care every child needed. (wip)
Quilo serves as Despondency's affectionate and humble companion, effectively his only friend given Despondency's tendency to isolate himself. Despondency, rarely venturing beyond the confines of his room, finds solace in Quilo's company and swiftly forms a strong bond with him. He regards Quilo as a friend, albeit mistaking his own romantic sentiments for him as purely platonic. The future remains bright, offering possibilities for the two.
They eventually began dating and now live a very comfortable life together.
Sorrow looks after his wellbeing and undertakes all of Despondency's responsibilities. To which he frequently laments and feels guilty for being such a burden for Sorrow, especially considering how busy his older brother is already. However, he is incapable of staying awake to effectively contribute. So, Despondency gives up and concedes that he is a useless Tearbell who will never amount to anything. Resulting in him falling asleep once more.
